Last one we've had one - 1939. Some don't know how to act. The police are setting up barricades at he most dangerous roads. The idiots among us, simply go right through them, amazing.
The last 24 hours have been very intense for me, using everything I can use (sandbags & railroad ties) to block the water from coming onto our property.
The rain comes in waves - 30 minutes of respite, then a solid hour (or more) of hard rain. The average annual here in the High Desert is about 15 inches. We've been told to expect 7 inches in a 48 hour period. We're going to be fine, everything is draining like it's supposed to.
Thankfully, ours is a tropical storm, and not a Category Hurricane. I've never been in one but saw the destruction in December 1970, after the Gulf Coast Hurricane Camille. The pine trees were saved down to their stumps; there was a large sea-going ship that was picked up and deposited on the beach at Gulfport Mississippi.
By Tuesday, it'll be like nothing happened.
The rest of the night, but I really had to hustle, our house sits about 20 feet lower than the street.
I'm just glad I don't live in one of those fancy houses in L.A. that tend to slide down the canyon, when it rains.
Stay dry Manny..

Even then I sit on top of a 24 ft mountain(!) of sugar sand...water not an issue even being across the street from the Indian River.
Atlantic looks a little disturbing with all those systems - only one is a little iffy, though.
Why was this a hurricane (before being downgraded)?

They called different things around the world, you are correct.
A Typhoon is the name in the Western Pacific. It is a Baggio in the Philippines, a Willy Willy(IIRC) in Australia(where they spin in the opposite direction). No specific name in the Indian Ocean - just a tropical cyclone.
The name of a tropical cyclone is specific to the ocean region - but they are all tropical cyclones...
