NFT: California hurricane, what ?

Manny in CA : 8/20/2023 10:01 pm

Last one we've had one - 1939. Some don't know how to act. The police are setting up barricades at he most dangerous roads. The idiots among us, simply go right through them, amazing.

The last 24 hours have been very intense for me, using everything I can use (sandbags & railroad ties) to block the water from coming onto our property.

The rain comes in waves - 30 minutes of respite, then a solid hour (or more) of hard rain. The average annual here in the High Desert is about 15 inches. We've been told to expect 7 inches in a 48 hour period. We're going to be fine, everything is draining like it's supposed to.

Thankfully, ours is a tropical storm, and not a Category Hurricane. I've never been in one but saw the destruction in December 1970, after the Gulf Coast Hurricane Camille. The pine trees were saved down to their stumps; there was a large sea-going ship that was picked up and deposited on the beach at Gulfport Mississippi.

God tried sending us an earthquake too

Whatever - this is some small-time nonsense. Just stay indoors.

By Tuesday, it'll be like nothing happened.
That's what I'm gonna do ....

The rest of the night, but I really had to hustle, our house sits about 20 feet lower than the street.

I'm just glad I don't live in one of those fancy houses in L.A. that tend to slide down the canyon, when it rains.

Welcome to our world.! Seriously, I'm lucky enough that I'm in the middle of the state so usually the hurricanes have died down, but we still get wind damage especially from fallen trees. A lot of flooding because the building of new subdivisions which are going in low lying area'a where the water would have not effected people was much as even 5 years ago.

The guys on the coasts are bigger targets, Big Blue in the Keys, Section 125, Jim in south Florida, grrnning's, and a lot more.
hopefully it will help in at least this way

I love the Babylon Bee. Reminds me of the old National Lampoon magazine

CALIFORNIA — Citizens of California are holding out hope that flooding from Hurricane Hilary will wash off the massive amounts of poop clinging to the state's sidewalks.

"Fingers crossed," said Sacramento resident Kevin Ross. "Bring on the floods, baby!"

:-)

but seeriously, I hope all are safe and sound

Even then I sit on top of a 24 ft mountain(!) of sugar sand...water not an issue even being across the street from the Indian River.

Atlantic looks a little disturbing with all those systems - only one is a little iffy, though.

tropical cyclones in the Atlantic were called hurricanes, while tropical cyclones in the Pacific were called typhoons.

Why was this a hurricane (before being downgraded)?

christian : 8/21/2023 10:23 am : link
Typhoons are in the Northwest Pacific, which is quite confusing, because that's actually Asia.

They called different things around the world, you are correct.

A Typhoon is the name in the Western Pacific. It is a Baggio in the Philippines, a Willy Willy(IIRC) in Australia(where they spin in the opposite direction). No specific name in the Indian Ocean - just a tropical cyclone.

The name of a tropical cyclone is specific to the ocean region - but they are all tropical cyclones...
