NFT: Replacing a closet pull string light with a motion sensor..

DC Gmen Fan : 9/14/2023 10:05 am
My kids' closet is a small closet that currently has a busted pull string light fixture on the ceiling and no switch.

I'd like to replace that with something that goes on when the door is opened (or motion is sensed).

Can I wire in something like this (see link) without a switch needed? I would prefer to not have to cut drywall and fish wires to a switch.

Any other ideas are appreciated.

Thanks BBI

Simple swap. Just make sure you turn breaker off, as that fixture is hot. Also , make sure sensor on new light is pointed out towards room.
Make sure you can adjust the sensor

otherwise the light will turn on when not needed.
I got a motion sensor with a remote control just in case of motion sensor sensitivity.
I would want a way the switch off the light manually

If not a wall switch, maybe a pull chain fixture and a motion sensitive bulb

closet pull string. There are LED motion sensors that screw into you base fixture. No more mess with replacing the base with a pull string. You leave it in the turned on position. Works great. Later on if you are interested, I can send you the link of the one I bought on Amazon.

Sounds elegantly simple. I'd appreciate the link.

Thanks!
Its convenient but I would get the wall switch version of sensor

Like commercial buildings or newer homes, so the light doesn't have to time out to shut off. Real inconvenient if you are trying to go to sleep if there is no manual
I had to replace my pull string

light and base three different times. It sucked each time. Someone told me about LED Sensor lights for a closet. This is the one I purchased in January and I am still using. So far so good. Good luck.

Highly recommend using Wago Levernuts in place of wire nuts. Using a wire nut seems straightforward, but there’s a technique to doing it right which few DIYers have. Do it wrong and you can have a bad connection or even a fire hazard. It’s especially tricky when using stranded wire, which most light fixtures come with. Plus, trying to deal with the fixture, which is unattached, while twisting wire nuts over your head is a PITA even for Pros. With Wagos you just slip each wire in and close the lever. Foolproof.

Last fall I installed a few new outlets for a 3 TV setup in my basement. I used those to make the connections. They were awesome
