Road game Sunday - then road game TNF

BillKo : 9/17/2023 10:47 pm
How unusual is this?

I generally thought if you played at home on Sunday, you played on the road on Thursday. Conversely, if you played on the road on Sunday, you were home on Thursday. Not a hard fast rule but thought that's how it usually worked out.

Are the Giants flying to San Fran area tonight or staying in AZ until Wednesday?

Now I do recall reading about something like that.

But how does a coach ask for something as far as the schedule?

It's not unusual once the home/away list of opponents is out for teams playing twice on the opposite coast to request those games be back-to-back. Obviously the Giants didn't know one would be Thursday, but they wanted to be able to stay out there, and this is what they got.

Every team makes requests. It doesn't mean you always get what you want. I am not certain Daboll asked for a Thursday Night game like this but I'm fairly certain he requested 1 west coast trip so they didn't have to make the trip twice. Honestly, if you know you have to play SF and ARI, why not get it done like this? They come home from it and have more time to prepare for the next game without having to worry about having the team in hotels for a week away from their families. It is kind of a perfect situation where you can have some team building by staying together for a few days where it isn't too long. I know we like to bitch about things all the time but the schedule will always have dumb things to it. From a coaching perspective, this makes sense. From a fan perspective, we say it is stupid to be on the road. My take is that all road teams are at a disadvantage on Thursday Night. The advantage is a mini team trip together while having those extra days to recover from the long flight.

Ok - ty. I did not realize teams actually made any request when it came to the schedule.

Remember reading the same but doubted myself but yes, I think Giants asked for this to minimize West Coast travel.

Not sure..

...I understand the opening post?
How is playing in NY on Sunday and SF on Thursday, better than playing in AZ on Sunday and SF on Thursday?
the travel distance
ElitoCanton : 9/17/2023 11:28 pm : link
is much shorter from Arizona to SF. So they don't lose a full day of prep for travel.

They asked for two games back to back out west. It is virtually impossible that they would ask for a Thursday game after a Sunday game. That was the league's decision.

And if you were at the game today…..other than the stadium…..it was like a home game. G Men fans all over the place. It was packed.

Played at home Week 1 then travelled to Philly for Week 2 TNF. According to Great Circle Mapper, the distance from MSP-PHL is 980 miles whereas PHX-SJC (San Jose, California) is 621 miles.
Not only a huge advantage for the 49ers over the Giants, but
Ivan15 : 9/18/2023 8:01 am : link
The 49ers get a big competitive advantage over the rest of the league. Two home games in a short week followed by 10 days rest before the next game.
Everyone has to endure a short Thursday game week but few play two home games, and then get 10 days to recover.

Without looking at the entire schedule, I am guessing that it is unlikely that there will be another East-West Thursday matchup this year with the same home-home situation.
Was Not Much of a Road Game
Jeffrey : 9/18/2023 8:38 am : link
To be fair, the game yesterday was almost a neutral field site. There were thousands of us in blue cheering for the Giants and it was easily predictable with the number of New Yorkers relocated to Phoenix. This was nowhere near the situation had the game been in Dallas or Denver.

The week three Thursday game is a good thing IMO. It gives the team an extended time to make adjustments after seeing the first three games. I do not expect a win Thursday. I would hope that it will position them to be at their best for tough, but winnable, games vs. Seattle, @ Miami, @Buffalo. I think 3-3 would be a good start at this point.
Id rather not waste a home game on

a short TNF week.

And I do like that we follow it up with almost a week and a half to MNF at home against a team that we need to beat if this season is going to be anything.
