This is crazy. No wonder we can’t stop the run. What other team runs a two-man front? The 49ers are going to rush for 200 yards. Once this alignment gets tossed, DE is going to be a huge priority going into the off-season.
Wink’s D has the look and feel of a 2-4-5 with not enough muscle and weight at the P.O.A. to stop the run. And our EDGE is getting shattered. It’s a big man’s game at the line of scrimmage and it seems like we’re only fielding 2 of them at any one time.
Edge run defender - as you'd say "defensive ends"..
Neither guy has played particularly well setting the edge in the run game. That's what they're here for because they don't give you much in the pass rushing department.
Thibs of course is a 3-4 olb/edge player and he frankly hasn't looked good...scheme has a bit to do with it as he had a shit ton of drop backs in this game as well, but he absolutely needs to play better.
Lawrence, Williams, Robinson, Nunez-Roches, and Davidson were on the field for a total of 149 snaps. So we averaged 2.3 DTs on the field across 65 defensive plays. (Short yardage might inflate that figure slightly, but not much.) The edges - Thibodeaux, Ward, Ximines, and Basham - accounted for 130, or exactly two per snap. Okereke played all 65, with McFadden and Simmons totaling 62.
In the backfield, McKinney, Jackson, Banks, and Pinnock played the whole game, except for one snap where Pinnock had to sit out after getting dinged. Hawkins saw 43 snaps and McCain got a few.
So basically, the Giants played nickel two thirds of the game and heavy the other third. At first glance, that seems an odd choice against Josh Dobbs. Maybe the reasoning, with Ojulari out, was to limit big plays and force Arizona to drive the field while attacking Dobbs from unpredictable angles. The results were terrible, but the concept was sort of reasonable.
The bigger problem, as others have said, is that the edges have been lousy and the DTs, other than Lawrence, haven’t been much better

Hmm; I've usually thought of it going the other way, that rushing four and sending everyone else back into coverage means you can trust your front four to rush the passer and don't need to blitz. In this case since Ojulari wasn't there it would lead to more blitzing.
having 2 promising but inexperienced DB's severely impacts the defensive line's ability to rush the passer. Dobbs was getting that ball out under 3 seconds last week
Going to need more time to disrupt then that, you guys should chill

I think we are 3-4 but are we? LOL
If we arent going to be good rushing the qb at least be good stopping the run.
Our tackles are big enough to two gap. This would also help us hold the edge better as the DT would be aligned over the OT
Except for one QB hit that drew a flag.
An impact player? Lucky to still be starting.

Who really is anymore? Nickel is more like a base defense most everywhere

It's a 3-4 base but reduces to a 2-4 on passing downs.
