XFL and USFL in talks to become 1 league

DanMetroMan : 9/19/2023 11:24 am
Pro football leagues XFL and USFL are in advanced talks to merge, three sources familiar with the situation tell Axios.

Why it matters: Combining the two may be the smartest path forward for the leagues given the challenges and the history of failure for NFL alternatives.

Details: The merger would be structured as a merger of equals and would require regulatory approval, one of the sources said. The leagues hope to combine before the 2024 seasons.

Fox Corp. owns the USFL, while the XFL is owned by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, his business partner Dany Garcia, and RedBird Capital Partners.
Game broadcasts of the combined league are likely to be split between Fox and XFL media partner Disney, according to the source. The USFL also has a broadcast agreement with NBC, although it's not yet been determined if that will continue.
An announcement of the deal could come as early as this week.

Best thing for both leagues

The USFL wasn’t going to survive with the XFL taking away an audience.
Makes sense from a talent pool view

they are already pulling from a small amount of NFL caliber talent.

Really dilutes the product when you have players that are crap
I know some people

do watch, not a ton, but some, but to me what would make much more sense (after combining) would be to create an official affiliation with the NFL.

Basically create a minor league feeder system for the NFL, like there is with NHL and MLB.

It wouldn't need to be one to one. You could have one XFL/USFL team that is a "farm team" for multiple NFL teams.

but what always stops me from caring about it is it just always seems like a collection of football players who could not make the NFL. No shame in that, but at the same time, in a world that competes for attention, I'm not interested in that. but....if there were Giants minor leaguers playing then maybe i'd have at least a passing interest.

Otherwise, it just seems to me like they are prolonging the inevitable and the combined league will eventually fail too.

For that reason, I'm out.
Two delis on my block are considering a merger as well.

Seems of similar national impact.
Didn't know there was 2 of them

I'd be cool for the NFL divisions use 1-2 teams as feeders

Something like the four NFC East teams provide bottom of the roster deoth for development to just 1 or 2 XFL/USFL teams.

I know I'd have more interest in watching their games, if I had a clear Giants rooting interest with one team in their player development.

The Rock has said he has a good relationship with Rodger Goodell and that they have had discussions about player development with NFL support.

I would like some sort of spring league for the NFL, but Goddell is so dumb.
The reason all these spring football leagues....

Eventually fail is the same: There's just not enough of an audience or loyal fan base of any particular team to make it profitable
