Can Jones win if he has to stay in the pocket?

eric2425ny : 9/22/2023 9:34 am
When I go over the last handful of games going back to last season it seems like the solution for any defense is to just keep Jones in the pocket.

He’s not like a Lamar Jackson type that runs more than he throws in some games, but his best games involve a lot of RPO and extending drives with scrambles when he can’t find the open man.

The play that really stood out early in the game was when he tried to scramble to his left and the 49ers had a LB that was clearly spying him and closed so fast that Jones ended up with 1-2 yards that would have been 9-10 last week. That’s when I knew they were in trouble yesterday.

He ever has a pocket than maybe we can find out

when he actually HAS a pocket
his legs are a plus talent

its a large part of his game. If he has to stay in the pocket, he's not close to the same player- at this point.

Jones was breaking the pocket a lot last night.

I think the question isn't about the pocket, and more can the Giants win if Jones isn't picking up yards running.
Herbie pointed out a couple

times how the Niners could keep players in coverage and were getting pressure with just the front four.

Giants running game was practically non-existent and against a D like that it is going to be problematic imv which is compounded by not having a very good skill group.

Yeah, that OL could not anchor against any of those interior DL last night. Run blocking sucked as well.

football teams and quarterbacks struggle if their offensive line struggles. It's football 101.

The Giants ran for 29 yards yesterday. Two of those were by the back-up QB.

You think a dominant defense like the 49ers is going to worry about Matt Bredia and Gary Brightwell?

What happens to one-dimensional teams against outstanding defenses? In any era.

The guy throws absolute darts whenever he has time which is rarely. Yet, this is somehow a question.

Niners took away the run lanes and designed runs for Jones most plays. It was something they got killed on last year a lot and seems Wilks has addressed it this year a bit better than Demeco Ryans did - Niners have the talent to do it - they run to the ball and are more disciplined on their DL gaps and not losing discipline at second level of defense.

Although I think he can, first we need to see a pocket.

He is tall, accurate and has big arm. Please, protect and let's find out.
It doesn't help

when you have to have extra players to help protect especially in the longer down/distance situations which the Giants faced plenty of.
Daniel Jones is not the answer

pains me to say that because I am a Giant fan and we just gave him a contract but facts are facts. I am so tired of the excuses for him. Perdy had just as much preassure last night as Jones. He made several throws with guys in his face. Jones can't do that. They both were sacked two times. When Jones faces a good defense he can't function. He is too slow processing information. He takes too much time. He can't quickly read defenses. There is a book on him now. Take away the outside runs and keep him in the pocket. He will not beat you from the pocket. You expect some drop off when a QB plays a good defense. With Jones he simply can't function. Last games against Philly, Dallas and SF...19 total points. six points a game!!!! Are you kidding me. Tyrod Taylor could produce more than that. We change receivers we change OL the story is still the same. Its the QB guys and it is not going to change until he is gone.
That’s actually an opinion, not a fact
UConn4523 : 9/22/2023 2:43 pm : link
and your opinion is full of missing details and information.
Can't beat you from the pocket?
BillKo : 9/22/2023 2:56 pm : link
What did he do in the AZ game?

What are some of you looking at?

And it's a good thing DJ does have legs because if he was a stationary QB this offense would be a ton worse with the OL.

Of the things about the pressure is it is coming from everywhere. He can't step up because the interior line can't pass block and Neal is getting beat regularly on the edge.

That post is about as crazy as I’ve read in a long time. We gave them NO pressure even blitzing 84% of the time. He had all day. As far as Jones? We let Bosa go without anyone blocking him. Our line just sucks.
