I was told he would make a major impact and really help turn the defense around. So far, I am extremely underwhelmed with his performance. What's the deal there?
single anyone out. The whole team is tackling poorly, seems like they aren’t in the right spots half the time, dropping would be interceptions, jogging around instead of gang tackling opponents, etc. They aren’t playing as a team on defense right now.
A good example is the bad snap on the 49ers side down in their own territory. I didn’t see one Giants player even noticing they basically rolled the ball on the ground and it was there for the taking.
I think it's a cop out to just say "Oh, the whole defense stinks". Okereke was supposedly going to be the best linebacker they've had since Antonio Pierce. Not seeing it. Did he somehow forget how to tackle after signing that contract?
i was surprised when they spent that much on a LB and so far agree
he flashes some violent hits but far to invisible for an every down player.
it boggles my mind that some seem to think spending $40m in FA on a LB was a better use of $ than keeping barkley, who is obviously a pretty big difference maker when he's on the field.
wink got a lot of resources this offseason he didnt get last year and has so far not gotten any return on them.
He seems aggressive at times, but apprehensive at others. I'm wondering if he is struggling to acclimate to what is really a new defensive scheme for him.
The defense outside of the DL seems to be lacking in terms of some fundamentals on knowing what the other is doing and assignments (both LB and secondary). Last night it was more just being physically outplayed and maybe a poor strategy by Wink.
I expected some struggles with the rookie CBs, but a little surprised how bad the second/third levels of defense have been.
BO, he is still adjusting. Again, I think it's hard to single him out. Even at his worst he is still the best we have had since AP, or maybe you want Austin Calitro and Tae Crowder back out there?

I don't think anyone would have batted a lash if the Giants gave Barkley 21.8M in guarantees, with no new guaranteed cash after the first two years.
The guy is a damn good LB. He...and pretty much every other player on D....is underachieving right now. Got to believe they will improve as the season moves forward.

look lost. Run fills on the wrong gaps, slow read recognition, losing leverage on contain, poor tackling.
Looks like a poorly coached defense so far.
This. There must have been at least half a dozen plays last night where you could literally see the LBs and DBs not knowing who was going to cover who or being unsure where to line up. They were gesturing to each other and trying to figure out where to go right up until the snap fairly regularly. It was maddening to watch.
Right now, I'm struggling with how much is him disappointing
who used to be a Giants fan (in fairness to him, he switched to the Pats in 1990 before SBXXV when he moved from Long Island to Boston - not an excuse, but he's not a bandwagon fan) texted me last night in the 4th Q and
He said "what happened to Dexter Lawrence?"
I said what do you mean?
He said, I thought the Giants extended him.
I said, they did, he's out there.
He said, Oh, really, I haven't noticed him once.
I said, he's double and triple teamed so you probably just don't notice him.
Except for McFadden. And then they miss tackles when they are in position to make them. I was never sold on Robinson or Nacho as being major upgrades on the DLine; they’re JAG’s. Tre Hawkins might be able to cover, but pretty obvious he is afraid of contact; now we know why he played at ODU. And I’m tired of waiting on McKinney to live up to the hype. Another guy who can flash in 7 on 7’s wearing shorts but disappears when real football begins.

Your friend bailed on the Giants during a Super Bowl season? Yikes.

Actually he was both a Pats fan and Giants fan once he moved so he did enjoy SB XXV (at least that's what he claims). Says he made the full switch to Pats only with Parcells/Bledsoe.
He has been a Pats fan since I knew him. I met him in 1999 or 2000, so definitely before they started winning with Brady and Belichick. We used to talk all the time about Bledsoe vs Brady at work. People not from this area may not realize how much of a debate that was.
Anyway, while I could never switch teams in any sport, I kind of view it like DNA or something you're born with and it is god's will, but I at least understand his reasoning. even if I disagree with it.
I could never imagine switching teams. But that's just me.
I remember the Bledsoe TB12 public debate, but I think it's well known that-even before Bledsoe going down-BB & the coaching staff preferred TB12. But with Bledsoe's contract & status as de facto Kraft son, the coaching staff was reluctant to do it. Then Mo Lewis got involved...
I could see rooting for the Patriots on the side if you moved to the area, since they aren’t rivals of the Giants, but dropping the Giants completely? Lame
He doesn’t appear to be a “Take in a block, shed a block” guy.
He’s too small for that. The down linemen are doing a shitty job of keeping blockers off of him. As others have mentioned, he’s getting lost out there in the bodies.

Agree. Something is not right. They look lost way too often. The two 3 and longs were embarrassing. Starting to lol like OCs are out coaching Wink easily

What happened to 1-2 weeks per each new player?

The season is almost 1/4 done, which makes this very concerning to me at least.

Huh? They did keep Barkley.

I am with you. There’s talent on this defense and everyone has been underwhelming

I know Michaels claimed to have seen Bavaro last night, but I wasn't as lucky.
This is an area in which too much tolerance can get you in trouble.

That’s what is really concerning, the missed assignments. There are a number of new pieces, hopefully they’ll all gel with more time together.
8:56, First quarter if you need the timestamp.
Some of that is circumstance, injuries and underperformance. But it is the reality.

+1
I wasn’t thrilled with the Okereke signing, but he’s had no help in front of him from the DL.
Looks like a poorly coached defense so far.

This^^
But I think it is a complicated defense to run and Okereke and others are still not on the same page, so it looks extremely ugly.
I do believe he will turn it around in a couple more games.
