Look, if our offensive tackles can hold their own along with JMS in the middle we can have a functioning offense vs Seattle and beyond. We know our guards are less than stellar but perhaps Ezedeu with the recent LT time will slide over with confidence and be a positive.

Just because he has most of his experience at left guard. I'd like to keep rolling with Mckethan at rg and ezeudu at lg

I think they both have the potential to be solid guards. Mckethan can't really pull so that will have to be worked into the scheme, maybe Ezeudu could help makeup for that with his ability to move in space. I think they could evolve into solid guards and they both deserve the experience. In an ideal world, Thomas-Ezeudu-JMS-mckethan-Neal has the potential to improve each game as a unit and if we sneak into a wildcard spot they could be at their best toward the end of the year as a young line improving each day gaining more cohesiveness.
the film breakdowns show that Neal cannot consistently take his 3 step drop to get in position to protect the QB. He has had enough time to learn this.He is a guard.

I think I am with you. Skinner kept saying "Trust your feet" which makes sense, like Neal is attack before before he gets to his spot. You would think an entire season and off season, this issue would be fixed if he could do it.
I trust Ezuedu's feet to get into position more than Neal. If Neal moves to Guard it really takes his worst quality out of the equation. I wish Neal was better but he is not.
We might just have to suck it up and call it like it is.
The best oline for 2023 is Thomas/Bredeson/JMS/Neal/Ezuedu
I think this might improve two positions for this year, just make the change now while we have the mini bye week.
In 2024, we draft a better RT, and then Ezuedu becomes out swing tackle. This all reminds me too much of Flowers, even though I know Flowers seemed lazy compared to Neal. But waiting for a player who is not improving makes the pick that much worse. No one is going to complain about the draft pick if Neal becomes a pro bowl level guard. The pick becomes a worse one by keep playing him in a spot he is not improving, I think it just might be the time to turn the page.
Why would making this change be any different than playing Adoree at nickel? It might just give us the best chance to win this year. We need to give DJ time to sit in the pocket. This might just be the answer worth trying.

Stop. "He's had enough time to learn". Right. Because you pronounce it so -- and definitively of course -- after 3 games. Just stop.
is Neal now starting to pick up his play vs. Bosa.
Remember Willie Anderson, who Neal trained with, mentioned things probably wouldn’t click with his new technique until later in the season. That’s the timeframe his private coach is using, and I’m assuming they’re still in contact. Not a convenient thing to hear when you’re looking to win games- but reality.
Not saying he’ll turn it around, but jury’s still out, and he just played his best game of the year.

Really? You mean he didn't say Neal was going to be spectacular from the first snap of 2023? What kind of coach is that? Neal needs to get onto BBI and get whipped into shape. He's just weeks away from being declared a total bust on BBI and flushing his promising career. A damn shame too, but the sad truth (known only on BBI) is if you can't become a top NFL OT in under 1,000 snaps it's over.
I started a link on this last week, Eric deleted it. So fuck it around here. Morons will be as such. You are 100% correct, Ezeudu has the feet to be a good NFL tackle, Neal sucks, plain and simple. Tru him at guard, he might become a very good one. We are 1 move away from having an offensive line that could develop into a good line. If this coaching staff does not make this move and soon, then I am afraid to say they may not be very good. That would mean more of the same. Can't admit we fucked up, so leave it alone. I am too old for this baby bullshit. It's obvious this move.

Yeah, never allow time for development. Has to be Pro Bowler right away. Blah, blah, blah blah, blah....

I am not expecting him to be a pro bowler. I am expecting him to be serviceable and I am not sure he is even that. His feet are simply not fast enough to get to the outside to handle an above average pass rusher at the NFL level.
As far as allowing time, How much time is necessary to make this determination?
I cant find Sy's write up, but here is a list of weakness on walter football regarding Evan Neal in college:
Can have problems with speed rushers
Not a gifted athlete
Can stand up too high
Feet can get stuck in pass protection
Does not have left-tackle feet
Has change-of-direction issues
Here is the list from NFL draft buzz:
Needs to work on his technique in pass protection, using more consistent leverage and continuing to move his feet.
Height can be a detriment in short-yardage, defender can get under his pads to hold the line.
Stops his feet after initial contact, relying on length but allowing the defender to get the corner or spin inside.
Can be susceptible to speed rushers. Doesn't have elite quickness off the snap and doesn't possess the top-level acceleration to corral defenders once they cross his face.
Brilliant in the running game just needs to improve his hand technique as a pass blocker. Relies too much on athletic talent - something he will be less able to do at the next level
His movement skills are only average for the most part and has had times when appears a little heavy footed
Struggles to adjust if he loses the first move and can be slow in reacting with a counter
Has had problems with his weight was 390 lbs while playing for IMG academy - will need to work had to keep his weight down
Neal has an occasional problem lunging, but his skill set makes him an easy day one starter in the NFL
How many of these has Neal improved on after his rookie season and ENTIRE off season with NFL trainers and coaches to work on these weaknesses?
I personally do not need more time to see he has not improved on the same weaknesses he had in college. He feet are slow and leans too much.
As a guard this weakness does not matter as much. He would be a better guard than a tackle. Zach Martin was a guard drafted in the first round, Neal could be that good at guard and there is nothing wrong with that.
All I am saying is Ezuedu has the feet to get to the outside and Neal does not. I would have a lot more confidence in this in with using Ezuedu's strength of his footspeed and Neal would be able to help Ezuedu on being inside of him at guard and using his strength and size.
If a person can work on correcting an issue of a year and half and does not improve, what makes you think time will fix the problem?
Thomas had issues, but he improved his rookie year and improved more after an off season. I am not saying Neal needs to be Thomas, but I would expect Neal to be better than he was in college and he is not.
This is not personal, this is just reality in my eyes.
I do not want to wait til the end of the season, and then have to wait til next year to see if Neal can play guard.
Put him at Guard and possibly upgrade that position, and play Ezuedu at Tackle who will look as bad as Neal now. Then in 2024, you draft a RT and the line issues might be fixed.
Im tired of all this wishful thinking BS. Part of fixing the O-line this whole time is about admitting you mistakes and moving on quickly.

I agree that would be the best safest route, I think there is more potential with Mckethan but more risk too.
I agree with this. McKethan's slower than Ezeudu and Bredeson.
Yes
This gives me hope for Neal at least. Not many OTs block Bosa one-on-one
Hopefully he is gaining confidence and the game is slowing down for him.
Seems like a good guy who works to improve.
