I hope Banks's arm injury is minor and he comes back soon. I feel the Giants would be better with Banks and Jackson as the outside CBs, and either Holmes or Flott at slot CB.
Hawkins has been awful, he's actually playing like an UDFA, not even a 6th rounder. He can't cover, can't tackle and gets stupid penalties. If the Giants are forced to keep him outside they are screwed.
Hawkins is not starter material period and for that matter neither is Shane Lemieux. Hawkins can’t or won’t tackle and Shane Falco could pass block better than Shane Lemieux.
I would like to know why all these deficiencies in Hawkins didn’t show up in practice? We were all singing his praises then….and now we are burying him as if he were dead.

To answer your question practice is just that and you do not find out who has the desire and guts to tackle until the heat of battle in a real live game.
Is a 6th round rookie!! He’s a freaking rookie… it’s not his fault BBI anointed him star status before the actual bullets started to fly.
Corner is a very hard position, and he has all the tools (which he showed this summer), but live NFL action is something he hasn’t fully adjusted to yet. I’m not surprised he’s struggling, but let’s give him a season and then see where he’s at then… jeez. The season has started typical of the last decade…. I’m freaking tired of the losing, but let’s not pile on Hawk after 3 GD games

Did you message Daboll and Wink? They think Hawkins can play. Those idiots!! They'll be forever grateful for your otherworldly gift to make such incredible evaluations seeing a dozen of Hawkins 148 snaps through the TV.
Hawkins has shown a lot of promise as a corner. Just because he and the whole team for that matter struggled tackling the likes of McCaffrey, Debo, and Kittle he is playing like a udfa and should be benched? That is absurd.

If someone can't play at a pro bowl level the first time they step on the field in a Giants uniform they should not just be benched, they should be cut.
I'm not saying he should be cut. But rewatch the SF game, he had cement in his shoes, just let guys run right past him because he had no idea what to do.
It's not worth sabotaging the whole season so that a promising 6th rounder can learn on the job.
Why isn’t he starting at corner? We have other guys who can play the slot.
We have to assume that Hawkins was outplaying Jackson in camp.
I’d be really cautious as a fan in evaluating DB play. It’s hard to do without knowing the coverage calls.
Not sure why you assume that. When they've had just two CBs on the field it's Jackson and Banks. What they decided was Jackson in the slot and Hawkins outside was a stronger combination than Jackson outside and Holmes in the slot. No one has ever made the case that Hawkins is better than Jackson. I also suspect they factored in the want to get Hawkins time outside because they are going to let Jackson walk.
Good point. Jackson and Banks played every snap v Arizona while Hawkins was shuttled out. Because of the Banks injury, the 49ers game was more muddied. Thanks for that post.
The Giants are really riding their safeties hard. Vs SF, Pinnock played 92 total snaps, incl special teams, and McKinney played 90. Talk about guys who needed some extra rest.

Sy's take on Hawkins after the SF game --- Is Sy ''absurd''?
Tre Hawkins missed 2 (of his 3 on the night) tackles on the same play, something you could go an entire season never seeing. He got flagged for holding and allowed every target in his direction to be completed. He looked lost, unsure, and tight. He may not be the best fit for the number of snaps he is seeing and after three weeks (and as many penalties), it may be worth moving someone else into his starting spot.

Small school background and this is his first NFL experience at this speed of the game since preseason is almost a joke these days.
Hawkins displayed raw talent in camp which is why they gave him a chance to play. I think we will rotate around more if he is struggling but they aren't outright benching him this early.
If this team wants to turn the corner you must hope and pray that Banks, Hawkins, Belton and Pinnock are our future and are legit players because at season's end I think we could be parting with Mckinney (UFA); Jackson (cap casualty or maybe paycut); and, we will be targeting secondary help in the draft along with OL. I can see us going OL and CB / Safety with our first two picks.
Some ridiculous expectations being set for a 6th round corner. Hasn’t been a liability in coverage at all. A few grabs, a few missed tackles…but those are things you can clean up with coaching. What you can’t clean up with coaching is guys who don’t have the length or athleticism to cover nfl receivers. I haven’t seen anything that suggests Hawkins can’t do that…

Another bad game and a contingent on BBI will be calling for the rest of the secondary to beat his ass with a pillowcase full of bars of soap on the next road trip.
But if he’s a liability on the field then he should be replaced if they think that Jackson outside and Holmes in the slot gives us a better chance. I would really like to see Flott on the field more. He had a great game against AJ Brown in the week 18 game last year and I think we should build on it.

If a player is not performing to at least average NFL level corner play you can’t wait a whole season to make a change if you want to make the playoffs again.
By your logic, half the corners in the NFL are performing below average and need to be replaced…
Hawkins has shown a lot of promise in coverage and has even laid some big hits.
If the goal was to make the playoffs, your suggestion is still asinine.
But the only goal is to build a championship team. You do that by developing your young talent.
DC tells everyone what we already knew, both young corners would have growing pains, particularly in this defense.
Young corner has a rough game.
The immediate reaction by fans should not be "bench the player."
Especially on a team that is not going to seriously compete for the SB this year.
Again, Sy also said the team should consider benching him. This is not an unreasonable take.
Young struggling players often get benched. It's common. Let him get right mentally and then ease him back in. But right now he is seriously hurting the team. Rewatch the SF game and focus on him if you think that's an overreaction.

I thought we looked completely different at cb after Banks got injured. Hawkins struggled badly switching to the other side and Holmes made some plays but also cost us badly at times too like the penalty. Are u basing this reaction off mostly the 2nd half or? Because i think he really struggled switching sides at halftime when Banks couldn't return.
And Sy is wrong. Why is he treated like he's infallible. He writes good evalutions of his opinions on prospects. But he's not a coach and he's not an expert on player development. He's never worked for a team in league. Stop acting like he is infallible.

As Herm Edwards said so elequently “you play to win the game” and to do that you should play your best players. Practice is to develop young talent and if they are clear and above the best player at their position like Saquon was when he was a rookie or LT back in 1981 they start the game if not play your best.

You think the coaches aren't putting what they think are the best players out there? Playing Hawkins while knowing he needs development -- like 99% of all rookies -- doesn't contradict Edwards. Ir's not like we have better CBs hanging around. We drafted them because we need corners. Hawkins earned a spot. He's not getting better without playing. If he's not better on the field than alternatives by mid-season he'll be benched. If he's not meeting expectations, he'll still be on the field until there's a better alternative.

Mid-season is too late to change. The best unit going forward would be for Adoree’ to go back to outside corner opposite Banks and Holmes or McCloud should go in the slot as they are not afraid to tackle unlike Hawkins who totally whiffed with no effort or one run and missed 2 tackles on the same play on another run against the 9er’s. Get your best corners on the field if we want to win games.

This!!!
We have to assume that Hawkins was outplaying Jackson in camp.
I’d be really cautious as a fan in evaluating DB play. It’s hard to do without knowing the coverage calls.
I think we ran a soft camp. Not sure how you evaluate players under that scenario.
This team was not mentally or physically ready to start the season and it shows. No cohesion. Poor tackling. Poor player evaluation.
Players need to make plays, but its on the coaches to evaluate an have them ready.
Total failure all the way around.
Here comes another 6 win season.

But the only goal is to build a championship team. You do that by developing your young talent.
As Herm Edwards said so elequently “you play to win the game” and to do that you should play your best players. Practice is to develop young talent and if they are clear and above the best player at their position like Saquon was when he was a rookie or LT back in 1981 they start the game if not play your best.

If a player is not performing to at least average NFL level corner play you can’t wait a whole season to make a change if you want to make the playoffs again.
By your logic, half the corners in the NFL are performing below average and need to be replaced…

If he's not meeting expectations, he'll still be on the field until there's a better alternative.

used to say that Giants fans were the smartest fans in the league. People here prove every day how wrong he was about that.
I think John Madden overall was correct in his assessment.
Numerous posts here disprove that every single day.
It only seems that way until you read other teams' boards and do a comparison, IMHO.

I still think we go into Seattle with all hands on deck but Barkley's.
