I did some research on Thibs and found that in college when he would disappear it was often due to the defensive coordinator trying to utilize him in different ways like dropping him into coverage and it seemed to throw off his rhythm, consequently he would disappear.
Perhaps, Thibs is the kind of pass rusher who needs to just bang it out as a passrusher all game to get in a rhythm and emerge late when big plays are all the more important at the end of close games (i.e. Ravens game last year and Wash game last year where he had 2 game winning plays).
I think Wink should stop dropping him into coverage and let him just get in a groove rushing the passer. Keep it simple for him and let him find his rhythm, enough of this multiple look you don't know who's coming shit when it comes to Kayvon. Let's see what he can do strictly as a pass rusher.
Thoughts?
I didn't like the pick either, thought he had some big mental question marks which are some of the most important parts of being a good player. I guess I'm just trying to find some possible light at the end of the tunnel here because he looks like he could be a complete bust, worse than Neal by a lot

that as a Utah fan I watched him closely in the last 2 big games in the Conference, and he played really soft. He was often blocked by a tight end one on one, and couldn't beat him. And that's what he looks like now

It's week 3.

But, but, but he smokes a pack a day!
If Wink wants him to win. Isn't he supposed to be the "can-opener"?
yeah.. Thibs is a pass rusher. Just like Happy Gilmore was a hockey player.

Do not drop him into coverage. He is their only competent ER, why is he in coverage?

You may not like what he has done, but he is not being used correctly and to say otherwise is ignorant. I agree he has been lackluster, but he is their only ER. The question is why is he mediocre?
Been downhill and straight into the toilet after that.

Wasn't he playing through a high ankle sprain?

iirc, he had that early in the year, but not near the end
Wink's known to use his edges in a more complete way, not just sending them at the QB. How he's using KT isn't surprising, but how he's calling games so far appears to be protecting his really young players from themselves.

He sprained the ankle on Sept. 4 and returned on Sept. 25. The first game against Utah was Nov. 20
6 of his sacks were against unranked teams
1 sack that’s right 1 sack against ranked teams
He disappeared in the big games against quality college talent
The dude was never a game wrecker
Setting the record straight I never liked this guy coming out of college

Totally Agree...and aren't most of his Pro Sacks are when he is Not Blocked...
Zadarius Smith averaged 4.6 in Baltimore, goes to Green Bay and 12.5, 13.5 in his 2 seasons after leaving Baltimore.
Year before was 2020 played 7 games 3 sacks
His best year was his freshman year played 14 games 9 sacks
He went downhill after his freshman year when teams had film on him
Joey
Agree he is being misused by Wink.
But I wonder what type of practice player he is.
Full disclosure I am losing trust I Wink as our DC
Having said all this I believe the Giants are still in preseason after 3 regular season games.

The Giants had 1/2 sack a game less than the Ravens last season but a massively higher pressure percentage 24.3 (6th) vs 19.2.
Do you think Wink will do worse with the added talent? I mean Thibs was Thibs last season, Azeez didn't see the field, and our ILBs weren't Okereke. CBs, DTs, etc.
Wink said -- repeatedly -- before the first game - excited about the new talent, need time to learn the system and time to gel.
He probably knew what he was talking about.
Those who claim KT is getting double teamed should watch this. I don't think he was double teamed even once, and multiple plays where a TE blocked him with no help

It looked like he was double teamed a couple of times. #87. TE Geoff Swaim, seemed to handle him even better than the OTs

Very good recap. You beat me to it. I am a night owl, so I have watched a lot of Pac 12 football over the years, and I never watched an Oregon game - knowing KT based on the recruiting I follow - and felt he was this special prospect. Good player - sure.
Myles Garrett special? No. JJ Watt special? No. Parsons special? No. Will Anderson special? No.
You want to see Pac-12 edge prospects who jump off the screen right now? Go watch Laiatu Latu of UCLA? Or check out Jonah Ellis (Luther's son) at Utah. He's turning into a real pain in the ass off the edge...
I think Schoen made a big mistake pigeon-holing us into taking a pass rusher there. Go bpa all the way whethe Neal or Ekwonu at 5 and Garrett Williams at 7. I'll never get over that, he seems so smart i just don't get why you draft for a particular position with top 10 picks when we had needs at pretty much every position.

that was posted on a different thread today. He said he was drafting a "pass rusher" at #5. If that's what he drafted, that's what he should be used as, for better or worse.

I think that even at #5, Thibs was the 3rd Edge off the board. He could have drafted the top guy at almost any other position at that spot.

Yeah it is a real headscratcher, especially at this point.

And most of his sacks came when he was unblocked. He’s just not that good of a player

If Latu's there in the first couple rounds I'd take him (assuming no further injuries and he'd have to be watched for his neck). He and Thibodeaux could make a pretty good pass-rushing edge duo.

I've noticed Ellis on several plays. I don't know if he's risen to the level of a star player, but I'll keep an eye on him going forward. Cole Bishop is a pretty good safety for Utah, btw
