Giant's blitz's the most 2nd lowest sack rate

bumpsinthenight : 9/25/2023 11:28 am
Anyone watching this team already knows this:

🏈📊🧑‍💻
@BradCongelio

Here is a look at each defensive unit's blitz % compared to sack %.

The #BillsMafia are scary, with the lowest 'Blitz %' in the league, but the highest 'Sack %'

The #Giants blitz the most in the #NFL, but have the 2nd lowest 'Sack %'

And what are the #Bears doing?!

not doing more to address the pass rush is still the head scratcher

of the offseason for me. they had a bunch of rushers on top 30 visits in the draft so i get that there was a consideration of filling the role with a high pick, but once they didn't ngakoue, houston, floyd and some others were all out there for the taking. melvin ingram is still out there.

to end up with ximines playing meaningful snaps again is probably the rosters biggest failure right now.

if they get things heading in the right direction i think that's probably the trade deadline thing to keep an eye on. grabbing someone like ngakoue or houston from teams likely to be out of it like chicago and carolina for a day 3 pick with them eating salary would make a lot of sense. if the giants defense can get to the deadline in 1 piece.
Purdy was getting the ball out

In 2.2 seconds average. You can't do better. The pressure we dialed up Thursday would create serious issues for most QBs, especially ones without Samuels, McCaffrey and Kittle to bail them out.

That’s fair only up to a point Eric. Sure more pass rushers was a need, so was OL, TE, WR, LB, DL and CB.
Disturbing.

Truly disturbing. How in the WORLD did this defense manage to go BACKWARDS from last season? It's crazy.
Small sample size here.
RHPeel : 9/25/2023 11:45 am : link
The Giants' blitz rate is massively inflated by the specific strategy employed on Thursday night and the sheer number of plays the defense had on the field. They'll be a high blitzing team in the end but they're a complete outlier right now. The goal on Thursday was to try to cover up the shortcomings of the offense by playing an extremely high-risk brand of defense and hope to force Purdy into a mistake or two. It paid off on the first drive but did not translate into a good outcome, and Purdy/Shanahan adjusted and settled in as the game continued. (Plus the defense got fatigued.)
Also...
RHPeel : 9/25/2023 11:46 am : link
Seattle is really a must-win game. The Bills are getting a ton of pressure without blitzing, and the Dolphins offense is ridiculous right now, so both of those are very likely to be losses. They can recover from 2-4, but 1-5 is probably too deep a hole.
Lets see what happens

to the defensive statistics when the giants offense provides a lead.

for those of us who don't know what a lead is: It's when the offense is able to score points on the opposing defense thus resulting in having more points than the opponent. Funny thing about this is, playing with a lead helps the entire team, every unit, and even the coaches.

Not sure they went backwards.

It wasn't a very good defense last year, either.

Is having a horrendous season. His defense against the run borders on criminal. Irs him, not the players. He is not putting the players in tbe best position to succeed. We all threw flowers ladt season, now we must he honest and call a spade a spade.

Well, that's a fair point. Does seem to me like our tackling is worse, and at least we had Thibs and Williams show up in a couple of games last year.
I've been told quite a bit...

the last few years that sacks don't matter. It's just pressure rate. So, for a decent chunk of BBI, this data is irrelevant.

This has been my concern too
ThorSavage87 : 9/25/2023 2:58 pm : link
It's almost we are blitzing for the sake of blitzing. We are not getting to the qb with sacks or hurries.

From my fan's eyes, all I see is a team blitzing on 3rd down in particular and getting our players out of position to make plays on a short yardage pass.

It seems like it is creating a vulnerability in the defense because the QB gets the ball out fast and our second level defenders are either out of position or covering too large of an area (NOTE: Also makes me wonder why we can't do this on offense to counter our poor o-line not giving DJ time to set up and throw).

I'm tired of seeing Kayvon in pass coverage and a safety blitzing. Send your pass rusher to rush the passer.
Take a look at that Bucs sack rate.

That’s one of the outliers for me.

Maybe they beat the Eagles tonight and go to 3-0?

That's true, I'd be interested to see QB pressure rate added to that chart to make it much more relevant.
Are Giants blitz rates skewed/exaggerated?
Matt M. : 9/25/2023 3:32 pm : link
We play a 2 man DL. So, if KT, for example, rushed the QB, is that considered a blitz? Any time we rush more than 2 a blitz?

There is probably some adjustment in the measurement to account for the scheme/alignment, otherwise you'd likely also see all the 3-4 teams overindexing here, but that's not the case. In fact, I'm pretty sure the next four teams behind the Giants in blitz rate are all base 4-3 defenses.
Garbage in
