Article by Ed Valentine in North Jersey about the state of the current locker room, suggesting there are too many nice guys and not enough players with the fire to call each other out.
Not only push the Giants around on the field & scoreboard, but also later poke fun at the team (Cowboys saying the Giants were afraid to pass against them, 49ers saying Jones play was pitiful & his salary post game was a travesty.) I am wondering who will speak & show up. Slayton & Hodgins stuck up for Jones in interviews, but it would be nice to see some fire on the field.
There are leaders. Someone needs to step the fuck up.
I never thought the Giants had "closed the gap" between themselves and the NFL elite teams, or that they'd really be in the hunt for a SB THIS year. Their schedule IS brutal. But we ALL thought they'd be better than what we've seen. The OL is still a mess, and they're still having to scheme around it. Until they can pass protect consistently, it's still going to be ugly.
I don't believe the sky is totally falling. It's not about who's playing well in September. It's about who's playing well in the last 6 weeks of the season. Remember 2007. That D let up 80 points in the first two games.
But if you're out of the playoffs early, it's gonna get very ugly.
Someone in the locker room needs to step up and loudly state what Carl Banks has been quietly calling out from afar. Thibodeaux, Neal, Ojulari, Waller, Lawrence, Williams, McKinney -- these guys DO need to MAKE PLAYS. The OL guys --it doesn't need to be perfect, but can't just completely WIFF like they're doing.
Some of these guys needs to step up, release their inner asshole, and be the dawgs that hold others guys accountable.
Between the whistles, it can seem as if your team has no fight. No amount of extra curricular shoving or sideline yelling will change that. The cowboys and eagles laugh because they physically dominate the Giants on both sides of the ball.
I didn't see anyone on SF as a dawg... They were all just very physical and very good.
These are all nice little tidbits to give the writers something to to do when the team is bad. I’m tired hearing about the need for guys with “fire”. See Eli Manning for evidence.
Wanna know what they don’t have enough of? Points, particularly in the games that they didn’t win. What makes a winning team? Scoring more points than the other team. The rest is journalistic bullshit.
I agree with you. The last thing I want on the Giants is a Deion Sanders/Terrell Owens type of player. But, I also want to see some fire in the players. There were times briefly, where the Giants had a chance both against the Cowboys and 49ers and you could almost see the energy of the team wilt and crumble under the pressure. The 3rd and long plays where we were on defense in the 49ers game come to mind. Lots of missed tackles and lack of hustle that you didn’t see in the Taylor, Mendenhall, Carson days. We played very soft and that would have been called out.
I'm not in love with the "Dawg" term, either. But it's about accountability to each other.
I think Banks makes these points -- as gently as he can -- in this clip. He's not wrong about any of it.
But, you can tell that if it was HIS locker room, he and other members of those 80s teams would be making these points behind closed doors. Sure, it's a different NFL, now, but it still needs to about accountability. Banks' Constructive Criticism for Giants Defense - ( New Window )
I guess a Dawg is a good player? I agree, this is a dumb article and premise that we have too many nice guys? I think our problem is that we lack talent in too many places, our right guard and tackle are horribly under performing, our edge rushers can't get to the QB or set the edge in the running game and those 2 things are the reason we can't beat good teams.
Doesn’t mean you’re good or bad. Being a dawg is about an attitude. You need guys that have that mentality, that fire. Yeah Simms and Eli may not have been Dawgs but both those teams had Dawgs on it. Relentless, emotional leaders that set the tone

Simms and Manning were both ultra competitive. And Simms would get in people's faces, including Parcells.
Answer me this, what player on this team if a QB is running in the open field (not on a sack) is going to try to hammer him and which will try to pull them down? We've already seen it this year. There is no one on this team that other players don't want to play against because of how physically punishing they are.
The group think from coaching on down…..is soft. Attention to details, penalties, turnovers, int’s, fumbles, poor tackling, poor blocking it has all added up to, if you pull back and look at its additive result the picture is of a last place bunch of losers.
I’m guessing most of the comments come from people too young
to have actually watched Phil Simms play. He was as tough and intense a QB as you would find. Grouping him with Eli regarding demeanor is silly because he was as fiery as Eli was laid back. For crissakes he famously got in Ronnie Lott’s face after the MNF game in 1990.
Be it scheme, personality of the players they’ve gathered,
Who knows. But this is still a bad bad team, one of the worst in the league.
I had hopes for the coaching last year.
Not this year in any way shape or form.
are catching on. No matter what talent the Giants have on this team it won't matter if their soft. Someone has to remind them in the locker room its not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog that matters.
Right now they are going thru the motions and just collecting paychecks, the fans know it by evidence of how many available seats are available before gametime on the secondary market. There are literally thousands of tickets available for Monday Night and its going to be excellent weather conditions
When that game happens, Danny is gonna look like a thanksgiving turkey to those hard hitting Jets defenders, kind of like how Newman looked at Kramer when Kramer was suntanning with butter......and the giants ball carriers can be depended on for some collisions that result in TO's.
We need a couple of Dawgs in this Giants team. The players are way too soft, nobody is out spoken. Cowboys are full of them. We talk about how the Cowboys pick all these outcast players but look how much talent they have in their roster. How good they are playing. Giants Org are to afraid to get some of those types of players.
But I do share that sense. I thought only that only offensive players addressing the team halftime at Arizona was revealing.

No one would consider Phil Simms a DAWG.. Eli Manning a DAWG..
Its stupid.

Think back to Bavaro, Jacob’s, Keith Hamilton, Pepper Johnson, Snee, Elliott, LT.
These guys played hard and nasty. I don’t see that today as much.
Anyone who denies this has blue colored glasses on

Imagine Dex with Keith Hamilton’s attitude.

That would be Deacon Jones on Steroids. Frightening.
There is no Strahan, Pierce, Armstead, Jacobs, Bradshaw, Snee, etc etc
There hasn’t been that personality for years, maybe Ward but he isn’t going to take over a game
Someone needs to take the bull by the horns and stop waiting for their teammates to make a play for them.

Tough to be intimidating when you can't beat a 1 on 1

I’m sorry man. Dex could absolutely be that guy. But instead he is a lovable fat guy who is still the best guy on the defense

+1. Agreed.
-Maryland Terp
-NY Giant
-Polish-American
And we may be also seeing a coaching/development/strategy deficiency overlapping that...

Could Wink be part of the problem? Edges in his system aren't stars, they open up opportunities for others.
