meaning no compensation other than $$ needed to bring him in, right? Not a bad 2nd sp signing for this off season

Yamamoto is my number 1 guy. After that it's a tie between E-Rod and Montgomery in terms of guys who won't cost anything but cash.

said than done but would be great to try and replicate whast Ng did with Miami adding Puk/Tanner Scott for very little, buying low on talent. Scott was one of the top RP in baseball in 2023.

April 3, 2022: Traded by the Baltimore Orioles with Cole Sulser to the Miami Marlins for a player to be named later, Kevin Guerrero (minors) and Antonio Velez (minors). The Miami Marlins sent Yaqui Rivera (minors) (June 1, 2022) to the Baltimore Orioles to complete the trade.

Puk for Bleday, a former 1st rounder who didn't develop at all.

I love Tanner Scott. Great future top 5 closer. If we can make a trade you have to consider it.

He would be making a decision between two/three teams offering the same. None of the teams would be 'paying him the most'

he'd definitely be my top target but im not sure he's the entire key. since 2021 nola is the 4th most productive SP in mlb, montgomery 17, gray 18, snell 19. ohtani 12th.

the 5 year age difference is highly attractive but im not too worried about a pitcher staying healthy through age 35 assuming all these guys get 4 or 5 year deals. i think the key is that they get 1 of yamamoto, montgomery, nola, snell, or trade for burnes bc any of them would form at least a competent top 2 with senga. getting any 2 of them would be even better though id imagine the 2nd sp will more likely be a lugo/martinez type in the range of quintanas contract.
with only 1 year left of arbitration (2025 FA)
Rory : 11/5/2023 9:45 am : link
Brandon Woodruff is a name that just snagged my attention. If Mil decided to pivot and rebuild, could be a good offseason trade candidate.

Finished 2023 season strong after injury:

5w 1L 2.28era 11g 0.82WHIP

So who can explain
pjcas18 : 11/5/2023 9:49 am : link
to me how posting works? I forgot, it seems like it's been a while since Dice-K who was the first one I paid attention to.

Does Yamamoto have a say in it or is it basically just highest bidder to pay the posting fee is the only one he can negotiate with?

He 100% gets to choose his next team, his previous team gets a cut of his contract. That's the long and short of it. It's FA with the NPB essentially serving as his "agent" (not in the sense they will do the negotiating, in the sense they get a cut)

They may well consider moving Williams but the cost would likely be immense. He's team-controlled for the next 2 seasons and his projected 2024 salary is only about 6 million. He'd likely cost "top" prospects as they have no incentive to move him.
When

1/3 not 1/4 but you catch my drift
I'd
DanMetroMan : 11/5/2023 10:12 am : link
probably put Bednar near that tier as well but he's never pitched in a big game/series because he's with the Pirates. Pressley/Minter somewhere in the next tier.

Tanner Scott
Rory : 11/5/2023 10:22 am : link
has been another name I like. With all the pitching already in Miami and another future UFA 2025, wonder if there a move there.

Assuming we kept some dialogue with Miami after Kim NG left.
I
DanMetroMan : 11/5/2023 10:30 am : link
could see Miami moving Edward Cabrera. I'm sure there are plenty of teams who think they can unlock more out of him. He was almost traded for Justin Turner at the deadline. I'd kick the tires there.

The Mets are close to naming a new manager because top candidate Craig Counsell is expected to choose a team within the next few days, a league source with direct knowledge of the process said Sunday morning.

Counsell has interviewed with the Mets and Cleveland Guardians, and could also return to Milwaukee. Cleveland is said to be a strong contender for his services, as well.

During the Mets’ interview process, Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza has also emerged as a very strong candidate. Mendoza has interviewed well this offseason in Cleveland and San Francisco. He is also interviewing this weekend with San Diego.

The only scenario that could seemingly delay the Mets’ process beyond this week is if both Counsell and Mendoza take jobs elsewhere.

It doesn’t matter if “the most” is the same for 2 or three teams. If MIL matches “the most” then he isn’t leaving.

It’s a report that is stating the obvious.

There were rumors last off-season they considered moving him for a “big bat”. The problem is obviously the Mets don’t have one to spare. Worth making the call though

Expected within the next 72 hours. Mendoza interviewed with SD this weekend. Genuinely curious what the pivot would be if they hired him today as they waited on Counsell and Counsell went back to Mil. I guess it would be Andy Green? Doubt it comes to that. Seems like 60/40 Mendoza right now but we shall see

rickie weeks among them - which seems to me like a pre-emptive move to lock down as many people in their org they like as possible knowing stearns is going to be heavy in the staffing game for a while even after counsell makes a decision.

for a small market team to pay any manager the equivalent of 5% (1/20th) of their active roster payroll (which at year's end was about 30 players) seems a little crazy, but i guess it sends a bad message to also let people who want to stay leave over money - but that's the destiny of any successful small market team.

People involved in the process expect Craig Counsell will make a decision today on where to manage.
2m more per year (x5+ years = 10m+) seems "blown out of water" to me

but i guess we'll see.

@MarinoMLB
I’ve sensed a Mets unwillingness to blow MIL’s offer to Craig Counsell completely out of the water. I think it’s entirely possible their offer ends up around $2 million more per year than MIL’s. Is that enough to drag him out of MIL? My guess is no. We’ll find out soon enough.

Worth noting "first time" managers have had quite a bit of success in recent years. Last 2 NL WS teams were helmed by first timers, before that Snitker, Cora, Dave Martinez, Kevin Cash, Dave Roberts all made and/or won the WS since 2017 #Mets
all rumors seem to coalescing around a decision of 1 or other today

Sources: Not a lot of concern exists about the possibility of the Mets losing out on both Craig Counsell and Carlos Mendoza. If the Mets were to miss out on Craig Counsell, they believe they shouldn’t have much trouble transitioning to a Mendoza hiring.

i don't know much about mendoza other than the last few weeks of reading but ill assume he's more experienced version of luis rojas. who didnt do so badly until controversy hit. i like that he has a strong defensive reputation.

Most
DanMetroMan : 11/6/2023 12:30 pm : link
of the QO decisions this season appear to be no-brainer. Soler is maybe the most ? I can think of given Miami's cheapness and Bell opting in at 16.5. I have a feeling Soler ends up an awful signing for somebody but if he doesn't have a QO his market should be decent.
is there any link between mendoza and stearns?
Eric on Li : 11/6/2023 12:38 pm : link
like i said mendoza feels most comparable to rojas - the big difference being that rojas was 4 years younger when he got the promotion and mendoza has spent those years at the big league level for the yankees, which is id imagine meaningful experience in knowing the difference between managing a minor leaguer clubhouse and a big leaguer clubhouse (which is where rojas seemed out of his depth). rojas had only had 1 year at the big league level before being named manager at 38, which was at the time 2nd youngest in mlb.

seeing this as i finished this post, the way this is being handled makes me think it's a return to MIL. if he was leaving i think he'd handle the exit in a quieter manner.

i assume the same. this whole thing ended up getting a little silly. almost reminiscent of when the mets were negotiating with seattle for lou pinella. pick a team and let's move on to the fun of cohen winning us another offseason.

like how many people even know counsell's name? what % of met fans are even paying attention to this? 5%? maybe 10% max? just decide and let someone tweet it. nobody needs an explanation it's all pretty simple. staying home or getting paid.
