The Giants are back at "square one", after giving us all a glimmer of hope after the 2022 season. The entire vibe of the team was off, starting in training camp and the exhibition season. It just seemed that "winning" was not part of the DNA, as it is with other perennially competitive teams. The opening night beatdown by the Cowboys just set in motion what we now have - a team that's just mailing it in, with lack of depth and some players having lost belief in themselves and the coaching staff, dragging down the others who just are not talented enough.
Despite the retooling of the roster since the Gettleman / Judge era (or error), it just seems that we don't have enough NFL caliber players and certainly not enough "Leaders" or "Winners" on both sides of the ball. Coupled with the players' lack of belief, we appear to be a team which would have a problem with most of the top 25 Division 1 college teams.
I continue to maintain that it begins with scouting and evaluation and continues with coaching- why do the Cowboys and Eagles continually restock with fast, dominant defensive and offensive players? How do teams like the Vikings "coach up" a new QB to win, while we have the Glennons, Fromms and DeVitos unable to function at all?
I just don't know if this coming offseason will be enough to restock the Offensive and Defensive Lines, while finding a QB who can see the whole field, make quick decisions, evade the pass rush, run for critical first downs and inspire the players around them. Somehow, I don't see a rookie QB being able to do that, unless we strike it rich in the draft "crap shoot".
Guess the team just needs to separate the players from the pretenders and go from there.
It's just disheartening to think we haven't progressed and are back where we started, unable to build on last year's success.
It's just tough rooting for this team.
