Usually when the Giants suck I can take solace in the trainwreck that is Washington football.
Although WAS is losing games, the fact that they have new ownership, a likely new coaching staff coming in next year, and a franchise QB in Sam Howell is really discouraging to see.
I've had the chance to watch him play and considering the fact he has started 11 games, he really is impressive. He had some issues holding on the the ball too long and taking too many sacks but over the past few weeks, he's seemed to correct that.
His poise in pressure situations is impressive (see Eagles games, yesterday's last drive) and he makes the throws. Leads the NFL in passing yards and completions. Again, only 11 games in.
I wish we had him. Washington took him in the 5th round. Cousins was taken in the 4th round. Finding that diamond in the rough seems to be the way to go if you can get it right.
The way to go is to get the top 10 talent. Odds are bettet with the first few picks of finding the next Joe Burrow or CJ Stroud….now, there’s a guy who is impressive, in the running for MVP as a rookie QB.
Sure he's thrown some INTs but he's in his FIRST full year and playing behind a poor OL.
In today's NFL I'm sure his play is not considered good enough or he doesn't get the first round pick pass - but the Redskins I believe would be smart to build around him.
But he throws the ball into the endzone. Rarely checks down.
Not surprising, there are Giants fans who can't see that, because if they could, the DJ "debates" would often be more of a generally shared consensus.

Over the past 2 weeks he's gotten noticeably better at sensing pressure and getting rid of the ball.
I guess wr’ll see. Hoping he’s not a top 10 guy, bad for the Giants. I like what I’ve seen of him, just see a guy who’s outside the top 10 - good but not good enough. Time will tell.

He's even worse than DJ in that regard. No QB gets himself sacked more often than Howell.

I am sure he has, this is what happens. PLAYERS IMPROVE.
Not always - but he has to be given a chance. It's his first full season.
The most frustrating thing for me in today's social media/message board is the lack of patience fans have for players.
I venture to say Howell's made more big time throws down the field from the pocket this year than DJ has he entire career.

Howell is consistenty throwing multiple TDs per game. I love DJ, but reading Sy's analysis someone posted a couple weeks ago really had me thinking.
We keep making excuses but other QBs are getting it done.

And yet he still is putting up yards and scoring points.
He has an obvious wart but its not crippling his performance .
And of all the things that could be your biggest fault, that one is pretty correctable just by playing maybe like a whole season in the NFL?
He's definitely not elite, but he's got good pocket presence, is mobile, is accurate, reads defenses well, and has a strong enough arm to make all but a few NFL caliber throws.
He does hold the ball too long, but some of that is because his OL is bad. Teams were getting pressure with just four or five defenders, which means he was frequently throwing against six or seven defenders. He needed more time to let hs receivers get open.
His OL is playing a little better now, probably because they benched Gates, who was annihilated by Lawrence in their first meeting. But Lawrence no longer has Williams, we'll be starting DeVito instead of Taylor, it's a home game for the Commanders, and we only beat them 14-7. I expect Howell to have a big game against us on Sunday.
You can win with Howell. The question is how much. Howell could be good enough to get a team to the playoffs and win a game or two, but he probably can't carry a team to a SB. Some would say that puts you in "quarterback hell."

And how, pray tell, do you get a top 10 talent? There are only 10 of them, you know....not every team is in a position to get a top 10 talent. You have to win with what you have. THAT is the goal.

But I don’t see a top 10 talent. Need to get that ‘guy’ that can make the difference in the biggest games. Good value for sure with a later pick.

One way is the draft. You know, the position we now find ourselves in with a potential top two pick. Yes, Skins can win with Howell. We won some with DJ. Ideally you want better, which is our opportunity coming up with next year’s draft. Hence, my comment about top 10.
That statement is ridiculous.
You obviously haven't seen him play much
This.

is exactly the same as every other DC QB other than RGIII the past 15+ years. Jason Campbell, Tyler Heineke, Cousins etc. He's good enough to win some games and maybe sneak them into the playoffs once, but absolutely not someone any team would fear in a big game. He will be a backup on another team in 2 years.

I have, plenty. He's looked good for stretches, has engineered some clutch drives, but has also looked awful in many other games including against our lowly defense. DC fans were touting Heineke as Mr. Clutch for 2 seasons. He snuck them into the playoffs one year, that's about where I see Howell' ceiling.
