Antonio Pierce & Dan Campbell

RELICDOA : 11/13/2023 11:43 pm
Is the NFL landscape shifting towards former players becoming leaders/head coaches? To be honest I am personally motivated more by someone who has done the job and been in the trenches and knows what it takes to succeed from personal experience. Does the current player respond better to former athletes? Yes I know former players as head coaches is nothing new…. Just great to see two of our own succeeding and inspiring these young men.
I hope Pierce succeeds
BlackLight : 11/14/2023 12:17 am : link
but I wouldn't assume he will based on his first two weeks. He's proven he can get his team up and playing hard for him, which isn't nothing, but it's not close to everything.

I still don't think Campbell's capable of out-coaching a talented team that doesn't play stupid.
Dan Campbell coached 11 years in the nfl before becoming a head coach

not just a former player
Pierce has very little coaching exp

And now how to lead/inspire, it will work.

Demeco Ryans another good example.

yes but I ll bet he knows you can't call two timeouts in a row and once u throw a challenge flag you can't pick it up and say I changed my mind😊
Is there an NFL coach
section125 : 11/14/2023 7:06 am : link
that has not played through college - maybe McDaniel?
I think currently most head coaches were former players
eclipz928 : 11/14/2023 7:21 am : link
maybe not all on the NFL level though. But regardless I think it's moreso youth of the coach that makes them not only better at relating to their players but more open to newer approaches to the game.

Definitely someone not too far removed from their career as an NFL player can have certain advantages, but there's just so much that goes into being a head coach that we should be careful not to discredit the other attributes that have made guys like Dan Campbell and Demeco Ryans successful so far.

I'm rooting for Pierce, but the reality is that he still has a lot to prove. How his team responds when they start racking up losses will say a lot about his ability to lead.
How about veteran team captains help motivate?

I like Dan Campbell and what is going in Detroit. They are

a pleasure to watch on both sides of the ball. Still need a few more plus players on Defense but coming on.

St. Brown, LaPorta, Mongomery and Gibbs are a nice set of weapons.

The skill set to be an NFL head coach is
mfjmfj : 11/14/2023 8:15 am : link
rare: smart, incredibly hard working, organized, motivator, and more. Number of great athletes that also have those characteristics is very small. This is exacerbated by the fact that truly top tier athletes rarely make great coaches because they struggle understanding why people can't do what they could do.

In short, I think you will always seems some players succeed, but not many.
The skills you need to be a successful head coach
Mike from Ohio : 11/14/2023 8:47 am : link
are different than the skills you need to climb the ranks to that position. A head coach needs to be an administrator, a good communicator, and a motivator much more than an X and O genius. More than anything though, they need people skills to be able to manage people and build a good support network.

To be a successful coordinator, you need the X and O expertise more so than the other traits. I think this is why so many highly accomplished coordinator don't work as HC.

Who should have not been fired. TC had to suffer from incredibly bad drafting by Jerry Reese who should have been fired much sooner.

TC was cooked by 2013 maybe 2014. I agree Reese was bad by then, but it does not excuse bad coaching. At worst, they should have gone together.

This has been a popular sentiment on this site but I'm not sure I agree. The 2015 roster was garbage in his final season and despite the 6-10 record they lost 4 of those games by 3 points or less (which included a 1 point loss to the 12-4 pats). Tom never forgot how to coach.
Pierce got a boost
Gruber : 11/14/2023 9:27 am : link
simply from how much the players loathed Josh McDaniels.

Parcells biggest plus was his ability to motivate and get a guy to reach (at bare minimum strive for it) his potential. That is huge when you really consider all these guys have talent, physical ability, etc. However the motor and the drive is what really separates them. Getting 53 to stive for their personal best and do it as a team anything is possible. AP won a SB playing David to Goliath. DC was part of a scrappy NYG SB bound team that ultimately loss. Both can bring the relatable moments to their players and show them the proof is in the pudding.
Pierce is still an unknown - beating the Jets and Giants is no big

feat. They may have done it with McDaniels anyway
I wonder if we had kept TC how
Simms11 : 11/14/2023 10:42 am : link
the team would have fared in the last 10 years? Would we have been a laughing stock? Or at least competitive. Yea his last few years were his downfall, but could he have turned it around? I truly wonder. He clearly had all the requisites covered.

Still can't believe they traded Hockenson to a division rival with a bare cupboard (at the time) at TE. Good for them that LaPorta has been playing well this year, but he's not the weapon Hockenson was/is.

Maybe slightly better. But, the last decade, personnel was as big an issue (or bigger) than coaching. I think it was time for Coughlin to go...but only if Reese went with him. The issue on the last couple of Coughlin teams was personnel, especially on the OL.

They traded Hockinson because he wanted to "reset" TE contracts with a new deal. LaPorta is turning into a stud. Great move.

So was exchanging Swift for Montgomery. Not big on drafting Gibbs so high but he is acclimating just fine too.
