“The Giants will love Drake Maye because there are similarities between him, Daniel Jones and Eli Manning with personality — he’s a relaxed kid,” one NFL offensive coach said. “He’s kind of raw in the fundamentals because he’s had a lot of coordinators, but there’s a lot to work with. He throws a nice ball, but there’s not a lot of sudden movement in his game, so it’s interesting to see if there’s a little more quick twitch you can get out of him that Herbert has.” |
Haha. I don’t see anything similar in their games, personality is the only trait I’d want him to share any wise.
I'm fine with the comparisons to Jones WRT attitude, prep, etc. It's on-field comparisons that would scare me away
it's going to take two years to find out whether or not he can win games.
I see some traits of both, really a hybrid of the two in some ways.
Where are you getting this?
Kafka should be more worried about the Giants moving on from him
I want them to pick the best quarterback, not the QB that most reminds them of Eli or, god help us all, Daniel Jones.
Giants will want Williams if I had to bet. He's the slam dunk #1 QB.
You're cheating you took time to read it ...
I think Maye would be a perfect fit for the Giants IMHO.
But there is a lot of time until the draft and things will happen no doubt.
And I like Maye. But enough of this ‘personality’ BS.
Geez find the best QB in this draft.
It will be interesting to see if other scouts and Sy speak on this as well and what it means for his projection. If it's about his running ability then I don't really care, but if its referring to a slow release...
Agreed. The Herbert comp is daft. Herbert's distinguishing feature is his brilliant arm talent. Maye doesn't have that gift.
Maye has a very good arm - better than Jones's - and he is a deceptive mover. Very smooth. The best comp, to me, is Burrow.
Williams, Daniels, Maye.
And they are spot on.
Since the first part of the 1998 season, not counting cameo starts by backup QBs Palmer, Smith, Glennon, Fromm, Taylor and now DeVito…ALL the Giants starting QBs were 6’ 5”.
This list includes not only DJ, Eli and Collins, but also Kent Graham, who started the last 6 games of ’98 and the first 9 games ’99.
Drake Maye is 6’ 4”. Caleb Williams is listed at 6’ 1”.

maybe i missed it. but has Sy said which qbs he likes so far the best?
Williams, Daniels, Maye.
Slightly off, he has Wiliams, Maye and Daniels, 2, 3 and 19 respectively in his top 96.
Sy's top 96 - ( New Window )
I lean to Jayden Daniels right now. He would be exciting to watch.

Maybe it's a way to "sell" the pick to Mara? *grin*

BW was giving his ranking not SY's.
BW was giving his ranking not SY's.
Wasn't he answering the question of asking where Sy had his rankings?
Sy rated Marvin Harrison, Jr. #1 pick in the draft on 11/6. Caleb Williams is #2. Drake Maye is #3. Sy's commentaries are included. FWIW
2) Caleb Williams – QB/USC
2023 has not been the smooth ride many were expecting and part of that does fall on the quarterback. But the truth is, there is not a player I want on the field more than him down four with two minutes left.
3) Drake Maye – QB/North Carolina
As was the case last season, Maye is the best pure thrower and most consistent passer in this class. The gap between him and Caleb is miniscule, and any team will be lucky to get either.
An ascending player that can threaten a defense in countless ways. Lightning-fast release, lightning-fast burst as a runner.
The running ability is a nice to have, but it's his passing that will determine his ceiling and long term success.
There's only one Lamar Jackson and he still misses games to injury and has questions about his ceiling as a passer when it comes to playoff defenses. These guys that need to run beyond the line of scrimmage in order to be effective are future injuries waiting to happen. Richardson broke down earlier than anyone expected.
Historically (and Schoen and Daboll have said) they like big, physical QBs. Maye is 6-4 and 230. He fits the profile.
Williams would have to wow them to the point where they go away from their type. This season is NOT playing out that way.
And they are spot on.
I don't know that you can overlay what previous regimes looked for to this one. Yes, prior GMs seemed to want a certain "type." We have no idea what Schoen and Daboll want. The key question is whether Daboll really wants a QB who can run or whether he did it so much with Jones because that was one of his best qualities. Clearly, if he wants a running QB, Daniels is the way to go.
And I like Maye. But enough of this ‘personality’ BS.
But we know what Mara would want. It's probably not Caleb Williams.
Compares him to Justin Hebert

view the Giants having a prototype for QB, btw.

I agree we don't know what Schoen and Daboll prefer in a QB skill set wise.
But I don't think I am out on a limb here that Mara wants a specific personality type to represent the NYG brand.
And those interests may collide at some point.

Lack of quick twitch, caught my eye because I was expecting to see more of that when I ve watched him play
It s becoming evident that the absolute certainty with which these quarterbacks are drooled over here, is being motivated by the Giants needing a young quarterback, and should be tempered a bit, the drooling part that is.
