We obviously haven’t been competitive when he’s played and the coaching staff doesn’t seem to trust him, but he’s made some plays with his feet and will take shots downfield. Does he have a future as a backup or will he be out of the league soon?
He is a backup. But it's too early to say. But he does not have a good arm, that is not good because what are the talents to overcome that? I don't see any yet.

He might be as good as any other rookie PS QB but that’s not saying very much. There isn’t much to think about. I don’t think he’s capable of winning a game at this point but who knows. Stranger things have happened.
shot of being a guy who can hold a number # 2 job in the league . To date, since he left high school , he’s been placed in difficult circumstances except last season at Illinois . How did he do? He almost beat Michigan in An. Arbor , losing 17-19 , in a game that featured a couple of very questionable DPI calls against a sold Illini defensive backfield on , like, third and seventeen plays . He was 21-30 for 178, which is the quintessential “ game manager” tag.
It’s not easy finding quality back-up QBs that don’t occupy what Louis Riddick says is the 8th highest salary-slot priority on the team.
There is a guy playing right now from Shepherd College these dates , right ? Bagent . Well who profiles as more of an XFL player , Devito or Bagent?
During these hapless remaining games , seeing what Devito can do is on my checklist .
Even after a few weeks they don’t trust him to throw a forward pass.
Huh?
Did you watch the Dallas game? They weren’t even trying from the first possession.
Yeah ok....nothing to do with the right side collapsing on the snap.
If he dropped back to pass then they were looking to throw. He probably has a limited playbook becuase he doesn't know all the plays as he ran the scout squad for 7/8 weeks.
When Devito was starting at Illinois, the team was bottomfeeders
He wasn't mentioned seriously with any QB's that were draftable last year and clearly 31 other teams beside the Giants did not feel he was worth a pick.
He seems like a nice guy and certainly is taking one for the team, but to be an undrafted free agent in his rookie season and being asked to start for an NFL franchise; the Giants no less....is absolutely insane.
This is a pure case of being set up to fail. Daboll says they are working with him, etc, etc, etc.....but he is a sacrificial lamb on the runway to a new and better team....hopefully.
even if some shorter throws are lacking in accuracy. He is also a decent athlete and able to make plays with his feet. That said, his pocket presence is downright awful, he’s going to need to improve markedly before I’d be willing to see him as the primary backup.
He can handle between the ears. He will be the #3 QB for at least another year, probably on the PS. If he picks this offense up and can play faster by that point he could challenge for the #2 spot.
It's impossible to judge him until we get 4 more all-pros on the OL to join Thomas, and a few stud WRs too. Even then, it wouldn't be fair to judge him since Waller is out.

That must have been a nice moment for him, but if I had to guess Michigan watched more film that week on CJ Stroud than they did on Tommy DeVito.

Sarcasm aside, he needs to show that the offense can run at something approaching the Tyrod Taylor level when he's the QB to get an NFL backup job. It seems unlikely in either event that there's room for him outside of the practice squad next year given that we're likely taking a QB with a top pick and Jones ridiculous contract makes him impossible to cut.
He was only brought in for a look because he was a local kid.
I am happy he is getting his moment in the sun, it makes for a good story but he is not a strong backup QB candidate.
He was keeping around to run the scout team and never see the field.
I have read several articles about DeVito, because he unfortunately for me, was my starting QB in fantasy lge I am in. My original QB’s were Aaron Rodgers (we all know what happened to him) and Stafford, who also got hurt, but , hopefully will be back this week. When Rodgers got hurt, we picked up TT, and, we know what happened to him also.
Now, I know there are restrictions in practicing during the week. But, the team needs to do things differently. I can only think of what may be within the confines of league rules. But , standing behind the team during these practices, is worthless! The coaches should, if reasonable, leave him the film room to watch and rewatch films of the QB’s who are similarly built. I.e. Mahomes, Stroud, and probably others, who have competed with success. No use standing behind the other players spinning the football in your hands.
I do not think that he is only “ allowed to practice “ a handful of plays? I would grateful if someone could embellish the types of things a 3rd string/practice squad player is involved in during their practices!
DeVito has 2 TDs on 54 passing attempts and a total of 3 TDs one in each game he played in
Daniel Jones has 2 TDs on 160 attempts (the worst such ratio since 1933 topping only himself in NFL history- his 2021 season) and 3 total TDs, all coming in same half of same game.
Jones averages a TD pass per 30.6 pass attempts for his career. DeVito is currently at a TD per 27 pass attempt

The first thing I think is who knows what his career will be. But Illinois was 5-4 in the conference and 8-5 overall last year. It was their first winning record overall since 2010 and in the Big Ten since 2007, when he was maybe 8 years old. DeVito completed 70 percent of his passes last year with 15 TDs and 4 INTs. He definitely helped improve the team. But maybe, using your logic, we should dismissed Williams because his team is 5-3 in the Pac 12 and 7-4 overall? He's "helped" USC fall from last year's 11-3 overall and 8-1 in the conference. They're bottom feeders to the best teams in that league.
Before you jump, no, I'm not comparing DeVito to Williams. I'm pointing out the QB isn't the only one responsible for a team's record. Texas Tech was 5-7 overall and 3-6 in the conference in Mahomes' last year. Why would KC draft a QB from such a bottom feeder?
As far as your bottom feeders claim, yeah, they didn't beat OSU, PSU and Mich. But it's pretty ridiculous to blame DeVito for not beating OSU, and Penn St. since they didn't play them. They did play Michigan and lost to them by 2 points in Ann Arbor. Maybe a better QB could have gotten the win. But the only other teams to stay within 20 points of Michigan in the regular season were Iowa (by 13 points) in Iowa City and Maryland (7 points) in Ann Arbor. By the way, Ohio State lost to Michigan by 22 points - at home. Why would anyone pick Stroud no. 2 overall when OSU was such a bottom feeder to Michigan? Michigan beat Penn St. by 24. Sort of makes losing by 2 in Ann Arbor against last year's Michigan team seem pretty impressive.
Second, I think it would be good if, when discussing a player, Giant fans could type his name correctly. It doesn't take a lot of effort. DeVito.
He processes slowly and needs a ton of refinement. Very clearly there was never an intention for him to get in a game as I'd guess the plan was to spend a full year on the practice squad developing.
If he progresses, his ceiling is a mid level back up.
I hope I'm wrong and he surprises us and turns into a better player than that, but I'm not counting on it.
I don't know how you could form any solid opinion on him. This offense has been a dumpster fire no matter who was playing QB this year. Sadly, he's put up just as decent of numbers as Jones and Taylor with nowhere near the experience.
a camp body and at best a PS player. He did look good in the preseason, but that was against third stringers and future PS players. And if the Giants draft a QB high next year, then since Jones has to stay on the roster because of his contract, DeVito would likely go back to the PS. But if he plays well the rest of the season, he has an outside chance of convincing the league he could be a viable #2. The problem is that not surprisingly he's taking too much time to make decisions. The game is just too fast for him right now.
If “no one” can operate behind this line and therefore we cant evaluate their performance then shouldn’t that apply to DeVito?
And if DeVito can be evaluated and clearly isnt very good then what does that tell us about Daniel Jones who has less TDs in more games and more passing attempts?

Which is why he and other young guys need to be playing - to gain experience.

Um..the same does apply. Which one of our playmakers balled out under DeVito or Taylor? Bellinger? Shepard? Waller? Slayton? Robinson? This offense stinks.
Do we want to talk about the Oline.
I doubt anyone is expecting him to be the starter next year, but he does have an excellent opportunity to get the experience to have a shot at being the backup.
He's an XFL talent
Part of me wants him to finish the year as the QB, but TT is coming back and will have to be put back in the games - well until he gets hurt again.
Huh?

This kid deserves a ring one day after Drake Maye leads the giants to their next Super Bowl title in a few years!
