Top QB Prospects – Condensed Game Highlights from Yesterday

Jim in Tampa : 11/19/2023 4:30 am
Last week I posted the condensed game video highlights for the top college QB draft prospects and they were well received. Since I’m once more spending my early Sunday morning watching these videos, I thought I’d share the links from yesterday’s games again this week.

First up is Caleb Williams… UCLA vs. USC in what was likely Caleb’s final game before being selected #1 overall by the Giants ;>)

Williams - ( New Window )

Drake Maye
Jim in Tampa : 11/19/2023 4:31 am : link
Apparently a number of Giants’ scouts were at the game watching BBI favorite Drake May in UNC vs. Clemson. Condensed game highlights linked below.

Maye - ( New Window )
Jayden Daniels
Jim in Tampa : 11/19/2023 4:32 am : link
Without giving away the result of this game, it should be noted that the Daniels and LSU should have had the easiest path to victory yesterday, as they entered the game against Georgia State as 31.5 point favorites. Condensed game highlights linked below.

Daniels - ( New Window )
Michael Penix
Jim in Tampa : 11/19/2023 4:33 am : link
Two of the highest-ranked teams went head-to-head yesterday, as Michael Penix and the undefeated Washington Huskies (5) faced the Oregon State Beavers (10) . Condensed game highlights linked below.

Penix - ( New Window )
Bo Nix
Jim in Tampa : 11/19/2023 4:33 am : link
Easy game for Bo Nix and the Oregon Ducks as they took on Arizona St. Condensed game highlights linked below.

Nix - ( New Window )
J.J. McCarthy
Jim in Tampa : 11/19/2023 4:35 am : link
I didn’t think JJ McCarthy was one of the top QB prospects, which was why I choose not to include his game highlights last week. However, I saw an interview with a football insider on Rich Eisen’s show (can’t recall which one) who thinks that McCarthy will be the 3rd QB taken. So, I’ve included the Michigan vs. Maryland condensed game highlights this week.

If I missed a QB prospect that you think the Giants should consider, just do a YouTube search with the names of the two teams that played yesterday, followed by “condensed game highlights” and then include the link on this thread… or start your own thread.

McCarthy - ( New Window )
Good stuff Jim

Thanks for doing this.

I think it’s clear that three QBs are probably going top 7ish unless they really find something on Daniels that no one is seeing this year.

I don’t understand why some are scorning on Williams. Despite having a bad OL and a terrible HC, he balled out yesterday and made some amazing plays despite constantly being under pressure.

I think people underestimate how strong physically he really is as a player. If we get the first pick - I would announce him as the first overall pick after week 18 of this season.
I loved the Williams highlights
cosmicj : 11/19/2023 5:52 am : link
Several great passes. Still concerned about his pocket skills but Williams seemed better on that front than last week v Oregon. It is a development area.

Remember when Lincoln Riley was a candidate to step up to an NFL HC job? LOL.
Here are the Crimson Tide v LSU highlights
cosmicj : 11/19/2023 6:23 am : link
From last week. Don’t think they made it into Jim’s thread.

Williams might be worth the cost but the drawbacks are real:

1. He fumbles a lot.
2. He takes a long, long time to throw the ball. (https://247sports.com/college/usc/Board/29/Contents/caleb-williams-time-to-throwholding-the-ball-stats-219130466/)
3. A lot of his "hero" throws are resulting in turnovers.

At this point I prefer both Maye and Daniels. But... I suspect the key with Williams is going to be coaching, and how well he responds to it. The raw talent is remarkable.
There's enough QBs in this draft
bluewave : 11/19/2023 7:31 am : link
Where a couple will fall to teams who will know how to take advantage of their skills and conversely a few who will be busts. I hope to hell the Giants are doing their homework!!!
I'm really liking Jayden Daniels

I liked the idea of seeing JJ McCarthy in blue. I have recently cooled on him. His draft stock took a hit based on yesterday’s performance. My current Top 3: Williams, Daniels, and Maye.
For a while, McCarthy was my #3 guy of the bunch
Matt M. : 11/19/2023 8:36 am : link
Daniels has shot past him. But, I would be happy with any, one of Williams, Maye, Daniels, or McCarthy.
Williams long 50+ TD pass
k2tampa : 11/19/2023 8:48 am : link
For those raving about this, throw, watch the video. The receiver has to slow down. If the DB does fall that pass is contested and likely incomplete. Compare it to Daniels' 70-yard TD to Thomas. He put it right on his hands at full speed, as he does most of his passes.
Nice work
Spider43 : 11/19/2023 9:05 am : link
Thanks.

After yesterday, I'm back on slightly with one foot on the Caleb bandwagon. He definitely has a bit of Mahomes in him, but I'm still wary of what's between the ears. I'm hoping Schoen does a lot more due diligence on him because I'm also wondering about the 'leader of men' part. He doesn't seem as connected to his teammates as he should be. Oh, all the tools are there, for sure. But I'd like Schoen to figure out all the 'intangibles' angles, before taking the plunge.

Then there's Daniels. Lots to like as well. I'm hoping Schoen and the scouting staff starts focusing on him next. He's shooting up the charts, for sure.

I think Faniels is great. However, he has more to work with, especially with regard to the OL. Williams' pocket is rarely clean.

Daniels. Who's Faniels?... :)
I think some of Williams

Flaws will be corrected once he gets to the NFL.

His fumbles are a lot of trying to do much but like stated previously, he has too. The team is just not that good. I mean the guy does have 90 TDs the last two years. He must be doing a few things right!
God Caleb Williams is scary
j_rud : 11/19/2023 9:31 am : link
I go back and forth 3 or 4 times in every video. The arm talent is bananas. Even with some of today's modern arms, I'm not sure I've ever seen someone flick the ball so effortlessly. It's superhuman. But the ball security is such a concern, especially when you consider the sheer volume of turnovers our QBs have produced in the past 2 decades.

Not sure where to proceed with ball security question, except that since his rookie year Jones improved and the previous two saw him on the fast track.
Like blocking, you have to want to do it and work on it. Every QB has issues with INTs and fumbles.

It is truly the least of my concerns.

You can't teach how he throws a football.

You can teach ball security.

It's a much better predicament than the other way around.

Can you speed up his mechanics? Can he process the mental part of the game? That isn’t always teachable.

I don’t think it’s a matter of speeding him up, I think it’s more of him trying to do too much. I actually think his pocket awareness is pretty good, he just thinks his athleticism can get him out of bad situations. That, I think, is far more fixable than slow processing.

Fan of Jayden Daniels but IMO there was nothing really special about what he did yesterday throwing the ball (despite the big numbers.)

in college football. I look at the talent and think how a better discipline and development environment and redshirt year in 2024 in the pros would help guys like Williams and Maye.

I don’t know what to make of Williams
Dave on the UWS : 11/19/2023 10:57 am : link
either. He does some stuff with the changing arm angles that I’ve never seen (even from Mahomes). But he has some obvious flaws and I wonder about his personality in the NY market.

Then there’s Maye. He looks like a pro QB with plus skills, but Clemson’s superior defensive talent wore him down as this game went along. He didn’t elevate his team.

Daniel’s skill set is tremendous, but I don’t think he’s a Daboll type of QB.

If they are picking top of the draft, the ceiling has to be the key.
Projecting, both the top two guys have high ceilings BUT they have enough flaws that reaching it is a damn good question!

Williams declined to speak to the media after the loss.

Not saying it’s a huge problem but it’s a reoccurring issue that speaks to his maturity if he wants to be considered a #1 overall choice. He puts himself above others and he’s still in college. Not great.

First full game I’ve watched, and other than some nice throws early, he was not good. It’s the first decent defense he’s played all year, that has to be a concern.

Mock all you want, but there are clearly some things to investigate here regarding his maturity.

We've had a number of first round picks now who were not mature enough and bombed because of it.

Maybe he will mature and change but Williams’ personality is not at all like Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers might be a bit of a dick sometimes but he’s always treated the media well and speaks his mind but he’s earned it.

Williams is a college kid and he just seems like he doesn’t think he has to do certain things or gain people’s trust/respect because he comes off as being above it. Big difference between that and Rodgers.

That raises a red flag for me. Is Williams degrading the OL’s ability to pass block? I see some clumsy pocket movement from him and other times he tends to hold the ball.

Eric, you've mentioned the "Caleb crying" episode multiple times, so obviously YOU think that speaks to his maturity level.

Teams will certainly want to investigate "who" Williams is (as Sy put it) but I doubt they look at a kid getting emotional with his Mom as a red flag or a sign of immaturity.

I get the concern. It's worth exploring.

If a team has the right support system in place, I believe these personality traits can be managed.

I'm not sure I would call the Giants avante-garde in managing Gen Z, but maybe with Schoen/Daboll are the right combination to deal with these situations...
