Rookie Tre Hawkins will start at cornerback in place of injured Adoree’ Jackson (concussion) today, per source. Hawkins entered the season as a starter in the nickel package, but the sixth-round pick lost that job after three games.
Nick McCloud got the start in place of Jackson last week. Wouldn’t be surprised if McCloud is still in the mix on early downs, but Hawkins is in line to get the majority of snaps opposite Deonte Banks. Chance for a young player to regain confidence.

He is better than McCloud. Let's see if Hawkins is part of the solution or if they need to target another CB early.

Giants-Commanders pregame thoughts:
• Hard to believe the Giants won a game here a year ago to essentially punch their ticket to the playoffs. Things have changed...
• I had little interest in last week’s game because it was obvious it would be a blowout. I’m actually much more interested in today’s game. This shouldn’t be a blowout. It will be alarming if the defense gets shredded again.
• The Commanders have a bad defense and they’ve traded top edge rushers Montez Sweat and Chase Young since the Giants’ 14-7 win in Week 7. The Commanders have allowed 37 completions of 20-plus yards, which is the fourth-most in the league. The Giants have just 22 completions of 20-plus yards, which is tied for 24th in the league. That continues a trend from last season when they ranked last with 28 completions of 20-plus yards.
This should be DeVito’s last chance unless he shows something. They could give Barkley the start next week and then hope to have Tyrod back after the bye.
• The Giants defense has been a disaster since the Jets collapse/Leonard Williams trade. They’ve given up 79 points in the past two games. That dominant three-game stretch feels like a long time ago. Need to see more against a mediocre Commanders offense.
• The Giants blitzed Howell relentlessly in Week 7. They had six of their 15 sacks in that game and held Washington to 1-of-15 on third down. But the Commanders found some answers in the second half and had two long drives late that didn’t result in points (blocked FG, turnover on downs). Howell has been on fire since that game, so it will be interesting to see if he handles the pressure better.
• The Giants have allowed 32 completions of 20-plus yards this season, which ranks 25th in the league. They allowed 48 completions of 20-plus yards last season, which tied for 12th.
Rookie corner Deonte Banks’ recent struggles started with his matchup against Washington’s Terry McLaurin (six catches, 90 yards). Adoree’ Jackson also missed that game, but Banks didn’t travel with McLaurin — they just matched up frequently. We’ll see if they change their approach to McLaurin, who only had one first-half target in the previous matchup. They likely won’t wait as long to feature their top receiver in the rematch.
• Gunner Olszewski was signed after the Giants muffed two punts in the first Washington game. Olszewski has performed well, but he’ll be tested by Commanders punter Tress Way, who can make returners look bad.
I recall going to the late season 2020 Giants at Redskins game, which was dubbed the Chase Young Bowl. Saquon ran for a thousand yards and we won. Days later there was an empty feeling--we had lost out on Chase Young. And settled for taking Andrew Thomas. So, we won double. The draft will always be a crap shoot.
Giants and the draft will take care of itself after the season. Too many games left to get worked up about it. * plus, you can GUATANTEE the Giants a drafting a QB in Rd 1, period. Jones has two neck injuries and now an ACL along with very questionable able play- they are drafting a QB..

What exactly would be the purpose of starting Matt Barkley for one game? Keep DeVito out there and let him grow. Matt Barkley is not going to be on this team moving forward. They need to see if DeVito can be a decent backup. Starting Barkley serves no purpose. They damn sure aren’t winning any games because of him, if that’s their master plan

Exactly. Barkley has no future here. And what little chance he would have is as a PS vet. The league has a good read on what he can do. Get DeVito as much experience as possible until Taylor comes back to see if he has a future.
because I generally think the concern about draft slot is bullshit. But this is going to be the franchise's most important draft since 2004. Thankfully I'm traveling to a wedding and will watch the game on DVR*
* Up through Joe Judge season 2, I would make sure to organize my travel plans around watching the Giants game live. But fuck this iteration of the Giants, they don't deserve it.
of their own, 27-10. This team is non competitive. Going to find a lot out about the defense today and the pass rush without Leo out there, because that line is bad (almost as bad as ours) and our DL should dominate.
DeVito has been improving and Washington's D has underperformed all year, and now they've lost two of their big guns. The Giants ought to be able to put up a couple of TD's even if they stick to a running and short pass game. The Giant's Defense on the other hand is at least competent when they're not playing the likes of Dallas and should be able to hold them to FG's
And Commanders.

but if they happen to play well against the Commanders and nobly lose, I will not complain.
In any event, I don't want to see the energy sucked out of this team by the start of the 2nd quarter.
Thanks for sharing k2tampa. I saw your post on the other thread about the SoS tiebreakers and rooting interests. Good stuff!
That is the smart approach.

I would much rather save a boat load of money and stay home and watch my quad box of real NFL teams play real football.
I really don't understand why any Giants fan would waste time and money going.

Lame that Riley is inactive. The guy did nothing but impress in preseason and now can't buy a snap.

I thought he ws pretty good in the regular season games they played. Perhaps DJ Davidson has a bigger upside they need to see and let grow?

I see more points for Washington. Maybe a lot more.
Great catch by Barkley.
