NGT: Justin Fields

jinkies : 11/20/2023 2:16 pm
I've never been a huge fan but according to some observers he's played well this year even though the Bears have been pretty bad. Yesterday he had some big plays. Almost beat the Lions. We all know the physical traits are among the top in the league. And he's never been paired with a top offensive mind like a Daboll, KOC, McVay...

Whoever is running the Bears next year is drafting a QB. I think that's pretty obvious.

I think a team in need of a QB, who misses out on one of the top 3, could do worse than take a flyer on Fields for a midround pick. A gamble that could pay huge dividends.
I gotta think the Bears are hoping he looks good down the stretch
Chris684 : 11/20/2023 2:20 pm : link
and they have their QB in house.

That allows them to sit there and take MHjr and use the other one as a bonus for either an edge rusher or a Bowers type or maybe even more likely trade out of the other top pick for a haul and keep building.
I like Fields

he's been on shit teams with crap coaching. def feel like he still has a chance to be a good player.

I don't know if he is good enough to put it all together. But if you get him cheap and put him with a guru, there's a lot of upside for a small gamble.
The problem with Fields is
robbieballs2003 : 11/20/2023 2:34 pm : link
you have to make a decision on the 5th year option at the end of this year. I don't think he's earned that. He's too high and low. That means he has 1 year left on his rookie deal. Could be a Jones situation again.
Fields is great
RetroJint : 11/20/2023 2:43 pm : link
The Bears should have stayed with Nagy. Their current coaching staff is terrible What probably happened yesterday is Fields gave them a chance ob the road against a team that is trying to get into position to have home-field throughout . Then their D collapsed in the last 5 minutes .
Ahh, the flawed logic we apply elsewhere

but not ourselves.

Fields is what he is and that is talented athletically but he is not refined. He could be a good QB but in very specific offenses- like the Ravens or the Browns and he needs a bigtime running game to allow his talents to be unleashed.

Had a big fumble that led to a safety, and eventually led to a Lions comeback. He’s not a long term answer.
If you are a Giants fan who wants to draft a new QB
Ben in Tampa : 11/20/2023 3:07 pm : link
You should be hoping that the Bears decide to stick with Fields

Agree that Fields is not the answer for the Bears. However his fumble is not what led to a Lions comeback.

Hutchinson did a strip-sack of Fields at the Bears' 15 yard line with only 27 seconds left in the game, which resulted in a safety.

Lions were already up 3 at that point and had the game won barring a miracle.

The loss was on the Bears D, which allowed the Lions to score 2 TDs in the last 4:15 of the game.

Nagy sucked as head coach IMO.

He is what he is - a good assistant.

They did go three and out between those DET scores.

Team loss.

Nagy sucks; he hasn't exactly kept KC as a high flying scoring offense.

That said, I agree with you on their current coaching staff and Fields. His passing stats have improved every year, he moves the offense and it scores points. He's thrown 4 td passes in two games this year and he's only played 7. I don't think its automatic that the Bears are taking a qb. I think it is just as likely that they grab Harrison if he's there or go defense.
I am not sure the Bears go QB
larryflower37 : 11/20/2023 3:27 pm : link
Go with Harrison or an O-lineman with the their own pick and walk away with a boatload of picks for #1 overall.
Take the 5th year option and reassess after next season. That would be my approach Fields has shown to be a high level QB at times and could use another year in the system.

Yeah, neither am I. I could see the new staff giving him a year to work with them. The Bears do like him.

Disagree. When your team's defense can't stop the other team from scoring the two TDs the Lions needed to win, in the final 4 minutes... it's on the D.

In any case, my main point was that Fields' fumble is not what led to the Lions comeback.
Field is a tough evaluation...
bw in dc : 11/20/2023 4:55 pm : link
There is a huge standard deviation.

When he's off, he's putrid. But when he's on, the splash plays are enormous, and he really looks the part.

And if anyone thinks the surroundings for Jones have been problematic (which is fair), the situation with the Bears is worse. Much worse. That organization is Enron.

If Fields gets the right tutoring, the sky really is the limit. But I do get the risks...
it's related to a point
santacruzom : 11/20/2023 4:57 pm : link
I've made a few times: it's possible there will be more young QB free agents with serious upside -- or at least FA QBs who were former high picks -- these next few years than you normally see.
Almost year 4

Why do you say this? What evidence do you have? Most of the media speculation I have heard has them taking a QB.

He looked terrible last year as a passer. This year he started off even worse. He really only has two games this year where he looked like an NFL qb and one was against a team that gave up 200 yards in a half to Tommy Devito. The other gave up 70 pts the week before. I don't think he's shown the any reason for the Bears to think he'll be the guy. Certainly not enough to pass on one of the top qbs

Pretty sure ajr is plugged into NFL circles.
