Miami’s Jalen Phillips just went down which what looks like a serious non contact knee injury. Tiki Barber made a negative comment about the playing surface on the FAN last week. How much is the turf to blame?
That on the turf. That looked like an Achilles (or severe calf pull) based on the reverberation and pop in the calf. Thatis often a result of the action (sudden explosive movement) and not the players foot getting caught.
The MetLife injury narrative is a bit overrated. It’s caused by perception.
If you remember, nobody complained about the turf for a decade. Suddenly a few 49ers players go down in a game, they make a big fuss about it. It creates a perception. Now everyone is quick to blame the turf whenever a guy gets hurt at MetLife. There are 2x more games at MetLife than other stadiums each year…Jets and Giants play a lot of primetime games…people are more likely to see an injury at MetLife as a result of more exposure to games at MetLife, so they perceive it as happening more frequently…when in reality it isn’t.
I could be wrong…but maybe someone has data that proves otherwise??
Who knows? His knee could have been unstable coming into the game.
In general, I blame the NFLPA for not forcing the owners to go to all grass fields. I have have ZERO sympathy for the owners, who chose to build new stadiums that could not use grass, or grass tray replacements.
Not that the field is the only factor here (lack of practice time, too many games, not enough off time after the season, etc.) Both sides are benefiting from a huge revenue source, but neither are doing what needs to be done to protect the players as much as possible. Until the players grow a spine and force things, expect this sort of thing to continue to happen.
The injury comes from the impact of an explosive movement on the tendon - remember that it's technically a rupture that pops rather than a tear.
Having spoken to surgeons, orthopedics and physical therapists, it could be any number of factors that lead to a rupture. There are some that point to today's cleats/sneakers for focusing all on speed and lightweight ankle protection rather than supporting the heel or Achilles. There have been a few high-profile Achilles injuries in European soccer on grass. Others say that today's pro and amateur athlete competes way too much with too much muscle for the tendon.
Could the Metlife turf have played a role? Sure, but not as much as you think.
This was just recently reported. Why in God's name don't they just tear up the "turf" and install a grass field. It can be done in the offseason.
What really needs to happen is building a brand new stadium that is similar to the other newer fields, sort of like the one in Philadelphia.
The Jets should also have their own field. They could put the Jets stadium in Staten Island (lol).
We need to deal with this thread every time there is an injury at MetLife? Like injuries never happen on grass. It gets tiresome especially since the turf was replaced this summer.
Papa is right, he’s just becoming quite the Mara spokesperson lately.
- The Giants always seem to top the list in games lost to injury. If it's simply the turf, why don't the Jets top the same list?
- Of all the stadiums using the same turf, are the weather conditions the same? Open roof or closed?
- Of all the stadiums using the same turf, do they follow the same maintenance regimen?
- Is the team's practice field turf the same as the stadium's turf?
- How was the turf installed and what's it installed over?
- Did they install it over Jimmy Hoffa's body and not use union workers? OK this one is a joke
These are just from my rather ignorant mind. I'm sure a ton factors come into play.
RE: RE: Wasn’t there a poster recently who reported he was able to get
investigation of the turf at MetLife to see if it really is as bad as claimed and if so why is it. Or is it just carryover from the old field. We know that several other teams are using this surface and I do not hear those stadiums being called out beyond them not being grass.
Not just for player safety, we would all prefer to see grass fields. I do not think there is anyone that wants turf fields. But since this field turf at MetLife is being ravaged by players and is less than a season old why is it being singled out. Perhaps the injured players should sue the manufacturer.
It needs to be figured out if it truly is substandard causing a disproportionate number of injuries or if the calls are just residual sentiment.
90% of the players do not know the field was replaced last year and is used in several other stadiums. They are just repeating what they heard from a few years ago
Injuries have been and are the Giants biggest problem...
but I think this is not a well informed argument. There are plenty of non contact injuries on all types of fields and I don’t think this field has been around enough to even form opinions yet

He blew his Achilles coming out of the blocks on his rush. It was a ticking time bomb. It would have happened on pavement or a basketball court or anywhere. Going after the turf for this particular injury is moronic.
Atlanta, Detroit, Seattle, Carolina all use the same company, FieldTurf.

Any recent changes or plans to make changes? This is the first season for the monofilament turf. It replaced slit-film turf. NFLPA president JC Tretter called for a ban on slit-film turf, citing safety concerns.
Field-related issues: Plenty with the old turf, which had been the subject of multiple complaints, including by the San Francisco 49ers after five players suffered lower-body injuries in the same game during the 2020 season. The knee injuries suffered by Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas were season-ending. Last season, the Ravens were unhappy after cornerback Kyle Fuller tore an ACL at MetLife in Week 1.
Other events held here: Aside from two professional football teams, there are college and high school football games played during the season.
Stadium owner: The Giants and Jets are co-owners of the stadium.
Giants Stadium was called a dump by most Giants fans at the time too. Most fans couldn’t wait for a new stadium. It’s a bit revisionist to now say it was “the best” because we don’t like the new one
Amount of use of the turf be an issue? With two pro teams, looks like other teams from lower leagues play there and are concerts held during the season?
You can blame turf for everything if you want.

Yes and they had replaced it in 2020 as well.
A lot of injuries, but not true. Cousins, JK Dobbins, T White injures happened elsewhere. Jones ACL happened on grass at Las Vegas BTW

Has me imagining running on moguls and potholes.

What did he say that is not true?

This would be an interesting distinction--perhaps the problem is not the turf itself but what's under the turf.

On the field proper, and that the turf is not flat due to rubber pellet build up? Rather it is a bit lumpy?

It is concrete underneath. The rubber pebbbles are mixed in with the strands to soften the surface.

I'd bet you're right.
Field turf is garbage.
Giants changed the turf this year to the same surface that 8 other teams in the NFL use.
So its not the same turf as before. Football is a violent sport. Violent contact. violent movement. The sport itself is prone to injury.
Or did I misread that.
What does Dallas have? Everyone seems so happy there.
