If Barkley not resigned,

do we likely get 3rd round comp pick (I know it depends on size of contract, etc)?
Doesn't it depend on his signing salary with another team?

I am not sure. It would be great if we don't franchise or sign him to have another team value him enough to give him a big enough contract that we snag a third.

may get nothing. It depends on how what we do in free agency.
Simply broken down,

We need to lose more players with bigger deal than what we sign in FA. A small part of it has to do with performance as well. The comp pick wouldn't be awarded until the next year. On top of all that, most likely no RB is getting a 3rd round comp pick. The salaries are just not there. The smart thing would have been to trade him and guarantee the pick. The Giants obviously feel different.
Guys, I don't even wanna think of the Giants without Saquon Barkley!

The Giants blew it last season by keeping DJ with the huge contract, and insulting Saquon with the franchise tag nonsense.
Barkley is probably the best leader on this team, and he's a forever Giant the way I see him.

Players come, players go. We root for laundry.
The value of RB
Giants : 11/26/2023 11:18 am : link
As we all watched last offseason, RB just aren't getting big contracts. Barkley is another year older with more injuries. The best he may get is 7 million. It's life for RB in the NFL today
If the Giants signed no top UFA's then it would be in 2025

. It's a little more complicated than that, but basically the league matches incoming and outgoing tiers of UFAs, then awards comp picks the next league year, not the year the guy leaves.
Assume we get squat for Saquon with comp calcs.

Hopefully Schoen lets him test his market value and we give him a few bucks more to stay.

Get another halfback on this roster.

best player on the team

sign him
I'd like to keep Barkley, but
section125 : 11/26/2023 12:12 pm : link
they maybe be better off letting him test FA to see what is offered. Schoen seems to have a number in mind for every player. If the offer is above Schoen's number, let him walk. It would be fair to Barkley to max his earnings.
Then, of course, they would need to either draft a RB or find one in FA themselves because what they have behind Barkley is not much.
Unpopular Opinion

I don't think Barkley should be resigned. He's an above average RB with Big play ability , good lateral agility in open space, and at this point average NFL RB speed. He's often hurt. IMHO Barkley is not getting much yards after contact, he's not hitting the holes with any explosion and he has lost a step.

Barkley seems over the past few years to put in 1 or 2 massive workload games and then he hits a wall and is ineffective until he has a break.

I realize the QB play and the OL play hurt a ton, and he's being asked to do so much, but how many 1 and 2 yard runs did he have yesterday? 10?

I realize they don't have a great answer either, but if the OL improves can't someone else produce this at this level for a fraction of his projected cost?
