He was definitely the front runner as he was on the A&M staff previously
He was certainly not the front runner. They offered the jobs to Stoops and he accepted and then the backlash from fans and boosters made A&M pull the offer.

They also had 4 other options turn them down
Who were the 4 other options that turned them down?
what little I know from my alumni forums is something happened with Stoops, but it was as much a media fueled runaway train as opposed to a major screw up by the boosters with money. I really don't know if he was truly being considered but tweets and media reports were written to make it seem like there was alumni/booster backlash. We have no power. We never had, unless you are in the seven figure donor class. Um, I am not.
Smart... there was a troll job fake report he was offered a $15-20 mil 'blank check'. Nothing in my sources say this was true.
Having followed my alma mater for decades and decades, I think they had egg on their face from Jimbo and needed to make a safe conservative hire, and then someone who also knows something about A&M. Elko (and Aaron Glenn) were some of the only candidates that fit that bill.
They may have thrown some semi-serious offers out to Urban, Kiffin, Harbaugh, etc. to see if anyone would bite. Again, seven figure donors are not on Twitter blabbing about their strategies. Media took a lot of pot shots. But Elko is liked around A&M, and again, he was safe.

That's all I got.
Go Giants. And A&M someday...
Urban Meyer would have been a great hire.
Here's the thing. If you want to go with a longshot coach, go with Curt Cignetti. What he's done at James Madison is phenomenal.
essentially run that Athletic Department. See also Auburn.
I don't know if I would hire a defensive head coach in a league dominated by offensive guys like the SEC is now. Granted the two best teams in the conference are coached by defensive guys but....

Only one I know for sure is Kiffin. Haven’t heard names on the others but speculation is Dabo was one
Elko has done a nice job with Duke, but I have no idea if he can recruit. And I'm not sure he's that great of an Xs and Os caller.
