With the Kakko injury, I was fully expecting the Rangers to go all in on him. I can't imagine Kane is going to be anything close to what he was after the hip resurfacing.
and maybe he would have been an upgrade over Wheeler, but not at that price. Not a bad signing for Detroit though, reuniting him with DeBrincat, and it's only 1 year. For a team that has the cap space, he's worth the risk. Rangers put all their eggs in the Kane basket last year and it didn't work out.

they can afford it (not just Kane but in general) if chytil or Kakko or Fox goes on LTIR until/if a longer term solution presents itself (Goodrow + a draft pick trade or something like that). Right now the Rangers have ~$16M on LTIR that is immediately usable cap space.
Either the rumors are true or something damn comparable happened.

Kane wants to win now (which is why he was traded last season). Blackhawks are dead in the water.

I understand the concern, but there's no way he wouldn't have been an upgrade from Wheeler.

The #NYR are recalling forwards Jonny Brodzinski and Adam Edström from @WolfPackAHL
They're also sending D Connor Mackey down.
That's a clear sign that they're expecting to be without Kaapo Kakko for at least a little while.
Had been playing in Sweden, but signed with the Rangers near season end and played 3 games with Hartford.
Has played in 18 games this year with Hartford and has 7 goals and 2 assists.
Quite noticeable on the ice as he is 6'8" and 225 pounds.

Brodzinski is tearing up the AHL, but that's what he does - plays well in the minors, but is barely a 4th liner in the NHL.
