WR I think will be tough because it is a great draft for one, but they can't afford to just sit around with just Hyatt and Robinson. Would people have any reservations on signing Calvin Ridley on the cheap as a pre-draft placeholder?
He was once an up and coming player in the league but his boneheaded sports betting (including on his own Falcons) got him suspended for a whole season. He's having a fine season with the Jags with Christian Kirk and Engram but not sure if they would re-sign him or not. Because of his suspension and coming into the league at 24 he'll be 30 next year but he's on his 5th year option now and never been a free agent.
Brian Daboll's one year as Bama OC was his draft year, so I'd imagine they have a decent relationship. He was also a big target for Hurts when he was at Alabama, so I'd hate to see him get recruited to the Eagles for a discount.
It will probably go Michael Pittman, Mike Evans, Tee Higgins, then Ridley in terms of priority for WRs - and chances are at least one of those guys resigns with their current team.
However, the past couple of weeks Ridley has produced.
A change of scenery might be good for him, but I can see him flourishing in KC with Mahomes.
Yeah, neither he nor Tee Higgins will come "cheap" and recent drafts have clearly shown young WRs hit the ground running right out of the draft. With a team still rebuilding, makes way more sense to use draft capital secure a #1 WR (especially in a much better draft than LY for WR) and then supplement other positions (like the lines) via FA.
this.. i would rather draft one.. or take a swing at Tee Higgins.. he will probably be cheaper due to his down year.
Plus you will overpay to bring a WR to a team with no QB. Remember?
I feel like people in general think you can’t pay a backup 6mil a year to sit on the bench. To me I know that there is very high likelihood that an oline member is going to get injured. I don’t want my season going down the toilet because I don’t have starting caliber depth on the roster.
Someone like Tyron Smith who signed with Dallas for 1yr/6mil. I’d give him 6mil to sit on the bench, then come in at either tackle spot when injuries happen. That’s money well spent…convincing him to sign here might be tough though I admit. And yes he’s and injury risk himself, so I’m not stopping there, have depth behind him, for example an upside drafted player.
Give me guards with center flex, plus draft for value throughout the draft 1-7 rounds. Bring in top udfa for camp. Load the “room” up. They don’t have to all be 15-20mil guys, give me depth and upside.
More than anything though, whatever you do make sure its for the right guys. Point is don’t reach for Nate Solder and don’t put all your eggs in the Pio basket either. Load the room from all angles and methods, but find the value and the guys you want not the guys you need. Draft FA UDFA Cuts load the room up!
Then if theres anything left in the bank, I’ll start looking at other positions once I’m satisfied the oline is setup.
Seriously, I hope he's conquered is gambling addiction, but I wouldn't bet on it (no pun intended). Let some other team gamble on him (pun intended). If he stays on the straight and narrow, good for him and them. C'est la vie. I don't want the Giants to roll the dice on him (another intended pun).
Over last decade, Most of the great acquisitions come via trade (Hill, Diggs, Hopkins, Brown, Adams) or draft.
Good #1 receivers don’t hit FA. Similar to QB, pass rusher and LT.
