Daniel Bellinger

What happened to him?

Rules of engagement - no Daniel Jones answers allowed. 😊

He had a very promising start to his rookie season last year. Looked to be a solid receiving option with sneaky good athleticism. Then he had a tough eye injury and he kind of limped to the finish a bit.

Fast forward to this year - Jints got Waller and Bellinger became an afterthought; used primarily as a blocking tight end. With Waller’s injury he’s starting to get more looks but it’s been a disappointing second season overall. He’s struggled with his blocking role and folks here seem to think he’s a second tight end at best. I thought last year he could be more than that..what’s gone wrong? Any thoughts?
He's a 4th round pick

With a limited skillset who suffered an unfortunate injury.

There were folks who were pretty high on him:

they fell in love with Waller and tried to make Bellinger a blocking

hoping that we learn after the season that he has some type of injury. He did get hurt early in the season and some were worried that it might be season ending.

Schoen and Daboll both spoke very highly of him last season. In last season's bye week Schoen said Bellinger being out really impacted the run game against Seattle as a example. Daboll said it hurt losing one of your better players when he was injured last season. Then complimented both Mara/Brown who were the two banging the table to draft him.

This year a big drop off.
This might again call into questioning the coaching being

administered to the offensive players.

Bellinger has not been used they way he was used last year.
Waller completely changed his use.

If you watch Bellinger he was not asked to run his customary routes. He was primarily used as an H back and inline blocker.

Waller was given the lion's share of the seam, crossing, sideline, and hooks.

The Giants ran 21 personnel with Bellinger as H back, some 12, 11,and 10 groupings. They did not run a lot of three Tes or 13 personnel. So when Bellinger was on the field he was asked to help the porous ol.

It is not surprising that since Waller went down that Bellinger's use has increased. Not the personnel groupings have changed just the pecking order and Bellinger's role.
I still think that
Bill in UT : 11/29/2023 3:05 pm : link
if he's utilized better he can still be a pretty good TE. But probably only with Waller out of the picture. They would need to also get a TE who can block to pair with him in 2 TE formations. I can't imagine that that guy would cost a lot.
His play
ElitoCanton : 11/29/2023 3:13 pm : link
has been a function of the disfunction on the OL. He's still a good blocking TE. But he's not going to compensate for all the chaos around him on the OL. He's still a good player.
I think it's obvious
Jay on the Island : 11/29/2023 3:21 pm : link
After Tommy Sweeney went on IR the Giants were left with Waller, Bellinger, and Cager at TE. Sweeney would have made the team as a blocking TE but once he was lost the Giants were left with Bellinger and two former WR's converted to TE who are awful blockers.

Bellinger has to stay in to block on most downs which severely limited his chances for running routes.
Ultimately I think getting Waller
gary_from_chester : 11/29/2023 3:23 pm : link
Has hurt his development quite a bit.

As we build the team, I think TE is very important. So, we need to know if he’s a core piece, or just an easily replaceable TE2. I like to think he can still be a core piece, but he just hasn’t looked like the same player. Hoping he closes out the year strong; looks like Waller is not for long with the Giants since he can’t stay on the field.
All summer he was hyped for getting jacked in the weight room
FranknWeezer : 11/29/2023 3:26 pm : link
and then, crickets.
Most likely
k2tampa : 11/29/2023 3:33 pm : link
a lot of the offensive scheme was built around Waller's skills, which don't match up with Bellinger's. So when Waller was playing Bellinger was probably the last option on most plays, if an option at all. When Waller went out, Bellinger couldn't play the Waller role, and the offensive line was so decimated that Bellinger was needed to help the line. I suspect now that most of the line is back, and Pugh has assimilated, keeping Bellinger in to block isn't as important as it was, and he'll get some more shots in the passing game.
The reason is clear
Now Mike in MD : 11/29/2023 3:34 pm : link
He's constantly being kept in to help pass block for a deficient OL. Hard to catch passes when you're constantly training wheels for OL.
Sophmore slump? Honestly Bellinger is the least of my worries
sb from NYT Forum : 11/29/2023 3:35 pm : link
...He was pretty good last year, and the Giants have him for two more years on a cheap contract, hopefully he will be productive the next two years.

But the Giants still need improvement at the TE position.

I think Waller gets cut after this year, if he doesn't take a pay cut, just my feeling.
I’ve been of the opinion
Giant John : 11/29/2023 3:40 pm : link
That Bellinger has not been used as he should be. He has not been targeted enough in the offense enough. That’s changing a bit but not as much as I would like.

Agree, think Waller is gone next year. Just concerned that maybe the eye injury derailed his career arc.
You can be very high on a 4th round draft pick
JonC : 11/29/2023 3:52 pm : link
but they're probably a 4th round talent, need to keep expectations accordingly. Eg, his success rate in the NFL is probably somewhere around 10-15%?

Of my more favorite picks by Schoen and company. But he was used poorly this year, and that's not Schoen or Daniel's fault. He shouldn't be used like Myarick. He's too good for that.
He’s a good 2nd TE in today’s NFL.....
Simms11 : 11/29/2023 4:26 pm : link
Seems teams are looking for more athletic TEs these days to compliment the passing game. It adds a whole other dimension as TEs can be very hard to cover for LBers or Safeties. He needs a lot of work on his blocking. Has not been good this year.

Actually, coming out of San Diego St. he was very much a blocking TE prospect.
He’s not a bad player
Breeze_94 : 11/30/2023 12:38 pm : link
Good #2 TE. If he is your #1 TE you better have a receiving core like Miami or Cincy.

Agree. Chipping tackles and in-line blocking is not his strength but I like that he's doing the job they're asking of him without complaining. He won't be an all-pro but he'll continue to be a productive player for us. We could do a lot worse with a 4th round pick. I still believe that with an improved O-line, the combination of Waller, Barkley and Bellinger is an extremely tough matchup for defenses.

As Frank Lucchesi , the manager of a hapless Phillies baseball team, said of Mike Anderson , one of his outfielders: “Mike’s limitations are limitless .” And so Bellinger . He would not make the roster of any other team in the division. , including the Commanders . I had him on one of my six-legs against Washington . Had the Over on 14.5 yards . Tells you quite a bit .
Remember how excited we were to sign Waller?
CT Charlie : 12/1/2023 7:11 pm : link
One of the best receiving TEs in the league, multiplying our options on every 3rd-and-5 and whenever we reached the red zone...

Seems so long ago, almost like we were playing in Yankee Stadium.
Personally, I am still high on him.
Matt M. : 12/1/2023 7:54 pm : link
I think once they decide to move on from Waller, they have a pretty good TE in Bellinger. Right now, he and the offense are re-adjusting to him not being a blocking TE. I thought before his injury last year he was a budding star. I had high expectations for him. I was not a huge proponent of the Waller trade mostly due to his injuries. I would have preferred a better WR and a legit backup TE/blocking TE.

I had high expectations for him too. Was concerned that in addition to the Waller acquisition, his eye injury may have had a huge negative impact. Hope that’s not so, thought he could be a really good player.
