NGT. Did Aaron Rodgers really have a torn Achilles ?

Spider56 : 11/29/2023 3:45 pm
So 11 weeks after his surgery, the Jests opened the 21 day return to practice window for AR today. For all you medical guys out there, what do you think the real story is? Was his new procedure a real medical breakthrough ? Is he a miracle healer? Maybe he wasn’t hurt nearly as bad as was initially reported? Or maybe there’s no chance he comes back this year and this is just another PR play to keep the Jests in the news? I can’t see much logic in risking his 40 year old body to coming back too soon

Hahaha nice one.

I mean I think we all have to assume it wasn't a normal tear. I wonder if it was a high grade sprain or just a smaller tear.
The replay
Costy16 : 11/29/2023 3:50 pm : link
Of it happening shows the ripple through the calf. The procedure that was done was called a "speed bridge" procedure, which is supposed to expedite the healing process, and it also guards against the tendon stretching.
One thing that is overlooked
k2tampa : 11/29/2023 3:56 pm : link
with ligament and tendon damage is that a ligament or tendon can be torn or ruptured. It might be able to be repaired, or it might need to be replaced. Or it might not need surgery at all. When a team say a guy has an ACL tear, they never clarify if it is torn or ruptured, or what type of surgery is needed. Since Rodgers was able to walk off the field, it is very unlikely the tendon was ruptured.

There are also new, less-invasive types of surgery to repair Achilles injuries which reduce healing time and thus rehab time.

Yes I think it was really torn

IMO the Jets and the NFL
SirLoinOfBeef : 11/29/2023 4:15 pm : link
are doing their best to keep Rodgers visible.

They even had Garth Brooks talking about him "On the sidelines walking around..." during his pre-halftime show interview. "How inspirational Aaron is..."

They'll keep trotting him out there to keep hopes up.

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 11/29/2023 4:16 pm : link
The Jets would be idiotic to let him return in a lost season behind that OL. But Aaron runs the show so 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️.

You know that was based on a true story. He did come back and play on that injury and ruined his knee and career.

I think in the book that scene was exaggerated

I actually just looked him up and never realized he actually was arrested later in life.

I think there is a Booby Miles documentary. It was pretty good if I remember correctly. I think they had him playing on a torn ACL or something.

Came here to say this. Another fun fact: our very own Jessie Armstead played LB for the other team in the finals in the real life game. I want to say he tipped the pass that fell incomplete to end the game, but I'm probably making it up.
Of course he did
Joey in VA : 11/29/2023 4:27 pm : link
He just had a newer procedure done that fuses the tendon at one spot rather than dropping in a slab of junk and having two infusion points, or something like that. They detailed it on the broadcast, so yes it was and yes he'll be back.
that new procedure
Fat Wally : 11/29/2023 4:33 pm : link
is probably considered experimental and a "Longshot". But he's also loaded and has access to top notch medical equipment and staff. Remember when TO had a berimetric chamber installed in his house so he could heal in time for the super bowl? Remember when Jerry Rice came back from an ACL tear in the same season? It's not unheard of, and if a player is dedicated and determined enough... anything is possible.

I also think Achilles injuries are not as bad as they used to be. Didn't Cam Akers come back for the playoffs/Super Bowl after tearing his early in camp. I think medicine has gotten better in this area.

ACLs however are still pretty much a year or more. I'm sure this has to do with severity of the injury, cartilage damage and type of procedure performed. It's too bad there hasn't been more of an advance here. I guess the recovery rates from it are better than they used to be.

I think that’s just what people say that hate him. He seems perfectly fine quietly living his own life, in fact, people complain when he does that, too.

He detests the media, and fucks with them because they are terrible at their jobs. That’s about the only thing I see him truly enjoying and don’t see it as trying to stay relevant.

Our views often align but gotta disagree here. Rodgers isn't out there live streaming, in the news every day, etc. No skin off my ass, but the reasons people often give for disliking the guy don't always add up.

Drewcon40 : 11/29/2023 4:54 pm : link
Rather the team he currently plays on. At least that’s my feeling.

Rodgers and the Jets are a big time losing combo.
Dave in Hoboken : 11/29/2023 4:57 pm : link
All of the players and coach Rodgers had them sign have been AWFUL, which makes it even more hilarious.
I don't think it wise to bring him back at this point
Matt M. : 11/29/2023 5:01 pm : link
A few weeks ago, this talk was at least compelling because the Jets were still in a viable hunt for a playoff spot. Their season is essentially done now. So, why bring back a 40 year old player from an achilles injury, even if he is cleared to play. What is there to gain?

The only advantage I can think of is it would get the mental doubt from returning from an injury out of the way now, in meaningless games, making Rodgers fully available for the off season.
Rodgers comments...

He was shooting to return to practice on his birthday, which is this Saturday.
You all know Cam Akers came back in 6 months from achilles, right?
BH28 : 11/29/2023 5:13 pm : link
He tore his achilles in July and played in the super bowl. Why is this so hard to believe? Is it not plausible that a non-RB could make it back quicker? Medical technology is constantly improving.

but he is a world class attention whore. Watching him lose to a bad Jets team and a mediocre Giants team in 2022 I feel like he has lost his fastball and is fading fast. Will have a good laugh when he plays again and is immediately injured.

I haven’t seen one yet for physical therapy post surgery, but I’m pretty familiar with Arthrex as their headquarters is just down the road from me. Twenty yrs ago they were an unknown, but over the past 10yrs they really put themselves on the ortho map, particularly with the success of the “tightrope” surgery that has got a lot of high ankle sprains back quicker and with less reoccurrence. Hurts and Tua both had it and we’re back a few weeks ahead of schedule. About 10yrs ago a foot/ankle doc I used to do lunch/learns with showed me and my coworker the “speedbridge”. It used a bio tape and cross-over stabilization technique that was going to be strong enough to be ready for aggressive rehab in 6-12 wks. It was quite ambitious IMO, from a tissue healing perspective. Since then, I’ve never seen one for PT as docs here still go with traditional tech. When I heard AR was doing some advanced technique, I checked and the speedbridge is mainstream, or will be. Idk how it will turn out, but if it’s a success, I’d expect to see more it at least in sports.

Well, I dislike him but definitely want to see him come back.

First, I feel cheated that I didn't get to see him play this year - he's a great talent.

Second, I want to see if the blowhard can really pull it off.

Because the guy comes off as a know it all.
