NFT: Mets nearing deal for Yankees Luis Severino

M.S. : 11/29/2023 7:00 pm
“…a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand on Wednesday. The club has not confirmed the move….The deal is expected to be for one year and worth $13 million, according to a report from ESPN's Jeff Passan.”
Yankees getting Soto

and Mets getting Severino.

This reminds me of 2018 - Yankees get Stanton in a trade and Mets sign Todd Frasier from Yankees.

Even with Cohen’s money, we’re not there yet.
Severino's

problem, in addition to not staying healthy, is he couldn't come to terms with the fact that he wasn't throwing 99 mph anymore but still thought he did, so he was surprised to get lit up when players were turning on it at 94 mph. He never adjusted. I don't know if he can be rescued as a starter anymore. I remember watching him getting killed and wondered if he was tipping pitches. But then he kept getting hit start after start and you realized, he wasn't tipping pitches, he sucked.

Going from Yankees to Mets isn't a change in scenery really because it's still the same town. If I were the Mets, I'd put him in the pen and see if you can turn him into a dominant setup man for Diaz.
Don’t analyze the single signing

They desperately need depth

They will add depth
Not a fan of this

Watched a lot of Severino with Yanks. I’d suppose they got input from Mendoza and Hefner to “fix” him.

Sounds like John Maine.

Once John Maine had shoulder surgery, he never got his velocity back and he was shot.
Fine with it if he’s the 5th starter

Mayer reporting we are going after Rodriguez and we are still hot for Yamamoto.

Yamamoto, Senga, Rodriguez, Quintana, and Severino would be an excellent 5 if we can pull it all off.

I would break up the righties and put E-Rod at 2, but sign me up for that. Also talk of a 6 man rotation if there are multiple Japanese guys and Sevy. Could work with Lucchesi. Megill/Butto as injury option. Hopefully withstand it until Peterson back/ young guy(s) ready
This isn't the old Mets

These depth signings to stop them from signing bigger fish.

They are grabbing their depth now rather than waiting to do it on the back end.

Sevvy's velocity stayed pretty much the same IMO. 95+ on his FB but I'm wondering if he was throwing too hard and the ball did not move as much?
Next Move For Mets
LTIsTheGreatest : 11/30/2023 9:19 am : link
1 year deal with Domingo German
Seems like a good deal for both sides
Heisenberg : 11/30/2023 9:25 am : link
Not a lot of risk contract wise, so if he sucks, not terrible for the Mets and on the flip side, he can definitely outperform that contract if he stays healthy.
There is nothing with this move
Chris684 : 11/30/2023 11:49 am : link
As long as it’s a precursor to more pitching moves.

We needed 1 depth guy, 1 innings eating/middle guy and 1 top end guy.

We got the first piece. My moves to follow this up would be Monty and Yamamoto.

Nothing “wrong” with this move*
