The Pogues were my introduction tovIrish/UK history and politics as it was the first really political band I discovered. Godspeed, hope he's found some peace.
Tortured? Maybe. His only stated goal was to drink and sing Irish songs. I was fortunate to see the Pogues twice. Once on St. Patrick's Day in D.C. Amazing show. There's a Youtube video of Fairytale that I uploaded a looooong time ago. Got some awesome pictures, too. I don't know how Shane functioned at times. It's hard to celebrate a genius who you are watching die right in front of you due to self destruction. Two must watch documentaries: :If I Should Fall From Grace: The Shane MacGowan Story" and "Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan"
This one hurts, but anyone who followed him knew it was inevitable for the last 30 years or so. Like others, I was happily surprised he made it this long. Rest easy, find peace, Shane. May there be Streams of Whiskey flowing wherever you are now. Terrible quality...cell phones have come a long way, lol - ( New Window )
So I just googled that, and Haunted with Sinead.
Wow, there is so much good music I don't know about. Thank you for sharing, I just added to my playlist!
my best man in my wedding and best friend growing up is Irish (1st gen American) - his parents were born there and Sally MacLennane was a staple late night a million times over and over..lol.
Along with other pogues songs, dropkick murphys, black 47, the Saw Doctors, and a ton of folk singers.
I still visit McGowan and Moore duets from time to time. No surprise given his hard life, but his voice will live on for generations. Saw him at Roseland nearly 30 yrs ago...still remember it well.

yeah, the radio stations just play the same crap over and over. Even on Sirius/XM, it's hard to find good music that hasn't been overplayed. It's hard to find artists and bands like Shane and The Pogues.
And Body of an American (which was a staple in a few episodes of the Wire) is a fantastic song.. In fact any time the cops are drinking at that Irish bar in the Wire there is always a Pogues song in the background.
I don’t know how to link it but check out his version of The Band Played Waltzing Matilda.
Rum Sodomy and the Lash is an all time great album. I believe Elvis Costello was the producer. Another music genius.
It was very sad to see how badly MacGowan destroyed himself with really hard living.

You’re right. Elvis produced a couple albums before Steve Lillywhite took over.
I saw him three times. Twice with The Pogues and once solo. Fairytale is one of my favorites, but so many greats songs. Rainy Night in Soho - ( New Window )

My favorite song by him. There used to be a live version of this at Virgin Fest that was taken down. The most amazing version of the song I'd heard.
I posted the video I took up above. Here's Dirty Old Town....great sing a long song for the ages. If you're not singing, you're dead. - ( New Window )
TIL Dirty Old Town was written by Ewan MaColl, the father of Kristy MaColl who sings the duet with Shane McGowan in Fairytale of New York. Maybe everyone knew that, but I didn't and makes that cover of Dirty Old Town even more cool.
Also, TIL Kristy MacColl's death was pretty freaking gruesome.
has one of the coolest and most romantic lines in a song ever. “You’re the measure of my dreams.”
I wanted it to be our wedding song for my now ex wife and me. She said something like it was never our song and then picked some rando tune i couldn’t even tell you what it is. SMH.

I played that song for my wife after a daye one night. It became our song.
the contrast between Sinead's ethereally beautiful voice and McGowan's clumsy honking was so absurd I thought it was a parody. Really grew on me though and I had to track it down and buy it. What an amazing pairing! RIP to both.

Years later when we were still married, she heard the song and finally got it. Some people have to "discover" things themselves for some reason.
Some truly beautiful tributes from Shane’s funeral

Fairytale of NY - ( New Window )
One of my favorites… Sinead was so beautiful back then… And was always deeply worried for Shane’s health
They both were untamed spirits who weren’t going to compromise… Both wonderful Irish poets

It’s a wonder that he made it to 65. So many of my favorite songs
