Hypothetical

GoDeep13 : 11/30/2023 12:43 pm
Your Schoen. The Wink and Daboll relationship is irreparable and Wink says he’d love to stay in NY but he can’t work with Daboll. It’s HC or nothing. What do you do? The offense hasn’t really performed since Dabes and Kafka have been at the helm but the defense has been generally good to great (yes a few stinkers here and there). Do you stay with your friend Daboll or roll with the guy that is getting results? Wink would probably promote his defensive staff and I could see Roman coming in as OC. I think it also opens the possibility of Jayden Daniels as a QB option.

Wink it was nice knowing him.
Getting results?

Our run D is pathetic. Good offenses destroy us. Don’t get the Wink love, we haven’t been good enough.
Adios Wink

With the real possibility that the Giants are going QB in round 1 I want an offensive minded HC to develop him.
Results?

The defense has not been "good to great" with the exception of a few recent games against poor opponents. It is a bottom-third unit in the NFL in most categories.

So, should Joe Schoen fire Daboll and promote Wink Martindale to a position he's never held because his unit has looked good against Zach Wilson, Mac Jones/Bailey Zappe, and Sam Howell twice?

I'm going with no.
No offense to the OP

But there are no fewer than four or five “hypothetical” threads today. What that tells me is it’s way too early to speculate on anything. What may be hypothetical to us is likely a scenario that may very well be accounted for inside Giants HQ.
Honestly?
SirLoinOfBeef : 11/30/2023 1:03 pm : link
This is worse than any Mara trial balloon scenario.

If Wink evee did this (andI know he wouldn't because he is a rational human being), I would fire him on the spot.

The leash is incredibly short for daboll for some.
I like Daboll
upnyg : 11/30/2023 1:03 pm : link
but Id be OK with that scenario if hes on his way out.
Good luck, Wink

the most overrated coach we have EVER had.
the offense outplayed the defense in 2022

I keep seeing a lot of people say otherwise. Check the numbers and re-watch the games if you don't remember. The offense was slightly above average all year and actually got a little better as the season progressed. The D was average all year long. Both units did their job to some extent but the O was better.

This year the O has been a disaster so no arguments from me there but the D has had a full deck, and I still don't LOVE the way its played. IF it plays like this here on out and maybe just maybe can show up in a divisional game not named Washington, that would be nice.

The O has been up against it all year long. The D hasn't.
We should never have another defensive HC
jinkies : 11/30/2023 1:30 pm : link
until the league starts making rules to favor the defense, which will never happen.
If you ever give your boss' boss an ultimatum
LW_Giants : 11/30/2023 1:32 pm : link
you should be fired on the spot. That doesn't mean you have to fully support the other guy or keep him, but if you're going over your boss' head to get him fired, you're showing you are not capable of working within an organized leadership structure.
Daboll is the right guy.
The Mike : 11/30/2023 1:41 pm : link
The future of this league is offense so we need an offensive minded head coach. Daboll has proven he knows how to get quarterbacks playing to their ceiling. This is not an insignificant talent. If he could get that team last year to the playoffs, imagine what he will do when we have an elite quarterback.

Wink is easily replaced. And there will be a large number of defensive minded former head coaches added to the supply of defensive coordinators in January. So the market will be flush with possible candidates.
So it sounds like the assumption is Daboll has been on Winks ass
Blue21 : 11/30/2023 2:04 pm : link
and he doesn't like it. Why does everyone including the writers think that Wink hasn't been on Karla's ass too.? Its just they have kept it professional and quiet
The shine is coming off Daboll somewhat.

I'm starting to have some doubts about that guy. I really like Wink - as the DC. I would not want Wink to be the HC. So I agree, he'd be the one to leave.

I really hope someone, maybe Dr Lani, can get them to fix it up by which I mean, get Daboll to lighten up, a lot.

Wink is under contract, he can't leave unless they fire him, and while it may not matter to the org, I assume he's got some guarantees. I never like when a team has to pay a coach to leave. I'd love for him to remain the DC.

I'd see Kafka go before I wish to see Wink go.
am telling ya'll ...I want Wink gone....
BCD : 11/30/2023 2:15 pm : link
wink....hahaha
I like Wink
Amtoft : 11/30/2023 3:08 pm : link
because I like blitzing defenses that put pressure on other teams. However while we have had some good games on defense we have had some brutally bad games on defense. The numbers show this... Bye Wink
Maybe the reason everyone likes Wink is...
D HOS : 11/30/2023 3:24 pm : link
Besides just being a guy with a personality we can appreciate and respect, our last few defenses have been pretty badly schemed, or even if game plans were not bad, the overall philosophy is not one that fans appreciate. Bend don't break oops it broke... again. Let them have that 5 yard gain oops it went for 20, that wasn't supposed to happen.

Fans were really happy to see the team have a different defensive mindset - an attacking, gambling defense, even if we lose the gamble here and there. Play moving forward and bring it, rather than play back and manage it. At least that's how fans perceive it.

I think if we move on from Wink, fans would be ok if the new guy brings a similar philosophy. I would accept that.
Are you serious with this thread?!?!
Jim in Tampa : 11/30/2023 3:42 pm : link
No NFL GM would ever cave to that type of ultimatum by the team's DC. And if a GM was stupid enough to give in to the DC's first ultimatum... what would happen when the DC made his next ultimatum?

And not to be a jerk... but it's "you're Joe Schoen", not "your".
If Wink wants to go deep (see what I did there)

with a demand like this, I'm thinking he'll be told to go home.

The 2022 season progressed all the way to the last game (38- 7) beat down. Neither side of the ball was better than the other.
i just don't want to go back to giving up a TD at end of the half

No more of that.
