Liatu Latu, Jared Verse and Dallas Turner

gidiefor : Mod : 2/9/2024 4:57 pm
I've been studying these guys. If you had to pick one, which one would you rather have on the Giants?

I know Sy likes Latu for the Giants, and he does seem to have more bend that the other two, and he has speed and power,

but Verse and Turner have more classic explosive toughness, doggedness and grit in my opinion. I like their body styles too. I was leaning Turner but Verse is turning my head a little.
For me...

Latu if his medicals check out. In fact if he didn't have medical issues in his past he would be considered a lock for top 10
Here a small sample of each

I think Sy was vague on his thoughts for the defense
Giantsfan79 : 2/9/2024 5:04 pm : link
Because we didn't have a d-coordinator so it was hard for him to make guesses. I remember Sy dismissing a CB because we just drafted one and likely wouldn't go there two years in a row. But maybe it's also worth looking at corners a bit here too
If we don’t get a top 3 QB

And MHJ is off the board I absolutely wouldn’t object to a slight trade back and landing one of those edge guys if Latu’s medicals check out (Schoen was in Buffalo when they took Rousseau) or the Oregon State OL.

Looked like he’s too light in the pants for my liking. I watched him closely during the sr. Bowl practices and he got handled by Talese Fuaga almost every time. I like Turner or Trice if he is available in the second round.
I am not as familiar with Latu's meds.

and find it awfully curious for a player to be ruled out from ever playing again, to transferring to a rival, kicking ass for 2 seasons and then pursuing the NFL.

I would assume that the Giants would want to do even more homework as far as anlyzing the injury on him than any other consideration they have this year. Whats weird is no article Ive read has said what the doagnosis was. I am very leery if the Giants cant get that info from the doctors. Particularly the ones that dealt with him in UW.

That said, college is not the pros. If he checked out, sure, he would vault to the top of my list. But if there was enough doubt in his assessment, I go get Jared Verse. No question. The giy looks like an animap when he plays against the pass and the run.

Either guy would be a perfect compliment to KT.

Not crazy about the other two.

Jared is a plug-and-play 4/3 defensive end very much like Justin Tuck was. If you stood Justin Tuck up, he struggled to pressure the quarterback. That being said, you put Justin Tuck in a three-point stance and he was like a hurricane coming off the edge making teams call in Homeland Security to deal with the aftermath. Jared Verse is that same style of player. The type of player that doesn’t turn the corner to pressure the quarterback when coming off the edge, they destroy the corner and scare the living crap out of the quarterback when they come off the edge. I’m profiling Jared as a ten to eleven sacks a year Edge Rusher, with the ability to stop the run, and have numerous tackles behind the line of scrimmage for about 8 years in a row. A coach’s favorite, a teammate’s favorite, and a fan’s favorite. That being said, he most likely will not receive that many NFL awards just like Justin Tuck did not. Nevertheless, Justin Tuck is a two-time Super Bowl Champion...enough said.

Turner for me...

I tend to think he's just starting to scratch the surface of what he could become as a pass rusher.
If we don’t go QB
Biteymax22 : 2/9/2024 6:23 pm : link
Verse is my top pick at 6 right now. I think I’m higher on him then most.
Probably Verse. But really not high on any of these three if
ThomasG : 2/9/2024 6:25 pm : link
we are talking early round one. Weak defensive draft this year for Day 1.
I’m split:
Joe Beckwith : 2/9/2024 6:27 pm : link
Verse or Turner.
They will be close together
Sy'56 : 2/9/2024 6:38 pm : link
Some of it will depend on scheme. However more and more young defensive coaches are taking over and they are better at altering scheme to personnel.

Based on a few things I read here:

Latu's medicals keep coming up because it is the neck and he plays in the trenches. His techniques and moves are on a completely different level than the others.

Verse has the best pure blend of power and speed - but his worst tape is the worst of the bunch. There isn't much variety to his game at the moment

Turner is the most explosive. Also the best hustler and plays with the most attitude. But he is one dimensional and the fear with him (as with a lot of Alabama guys) is that they are further along with development and won't get much better than where they currently are.
I like Verse because he can set the edge and play the run
Greg from LI : 2/9/2024 6:43 pm : link
As well as he can rush the passer.
cowboys
Hilary : 2/9/2024 6:52 pm : link
this is a wide receiver or qb board but the cowboys put up 40 and 49 on the giants this year and the defense will be worse without Williams, Mckinney, Jackson and Robinson.

Also depending on the medicals.

This. Like Ceez I am a Noles fan, but the guy reminds me of Tuck, can set the edge. Can get after the QB. I like big body DEs.

The Tuck comparisons, ithis is the first time Ive heard them. Tuck played a lot bigger IMO and could kick inside on pass rush downs. He reminded me more of Shaun Ellis as a pro. Verse reminds me of Trent Cole or Kyle Vanden Bosch or Michael Bennett. Def closer to Tuck in size for sure. But again, Im def no expert on Verse. I dont know how often he got kicked inside.

By a country mile. I think Trice should be in this conversation too
Verse is similar to Kayvon, but more power

in his game. I like Turner and Verse, but have Nabers and Odunze ahead of them

No doubt Tuck was bigger, playing at 280/285. But Verse is strong at the point of attack and can hold the edge, like Tuck could.
Could Verse play inside in a rush package? I haven't a clue.

Wow - any one of those guys playing on the opposite sided of KT would make 2 very good book ends on the DL.
