GBN Draft Report: Updated 2024 Big Board (February 8th)

M.S. : 2/10/2024 8:14 am

This Big Board goes 227 prospects deep, and as our friends at GBN note: "...our board reflects less how we have the players rated ourselves, but as best as we can figure how NFL teams have them ranked on their boards."

My assumption is that GBN has some serious contacts in the NFL because -- overall -- their Big Board has always been VERY insightful as to the approximate range in which college prospects are drafted.

QB seems to be on everyone's mind, so here are the 14 prospects that made the list (and their current Big Board Ranking):

Caleb Williams (1)
Jayden Daniels (3)
Drake Maye (4)
JJ McCarthy (23)
Bo Nix (26)
Michael Penix (34)
Spencer Rattler (71)
Jordan Travis (112)
Michael Pratt (127)
Joe Milton (130)
Devin Leary (155)
Sam Hartman (167)
Austin Reed (176)
Kedon Slovis (184)

If the Giants miss out on the Top 3, there may be an opportunity to trade back up into Round One for either JJ McCarthy, Bo Nix or Michael Penix. Or snag one of them by virtue of a trade down.

Based on Tankathon the Giants have the 6th, 39th, 47th, 70th, 107th, 139th and 184th selections. Below are the prospects GBN has listed at these picks, as well as the prospects right before and right after each pick. Plenty of fine prospects for Joe Schoen to choose from:

Round One
5 Malik Nabers WR
6 Olu Fashanu OT
7 Rome Odunze WR

Round Two
38 Troy Franklin WR
39 Chris Braswell ER
40 Kingsley Saumataia OT

Round Two
46 Brandon Dorlus DE
47 Xavier Legette WR
48 Ja'Tavion Sanders TE

Round Three
69 Audric Estime RB
70 Josh Newton CB
71 Spencer Rattler QB

Round Four
106 Ja'Lynn Polk WR
107 Nehemiah Pritchett CB
108 Nathaniel Watson LB

Round Five
138 Drake Nugent C
139 Fabien Lovett DT
140 Luke McCaffrey WR

Round Six
183 Jarrian Jones CB
184 Kedon Slovis QB
185 Emani Bailey RB

I can't wait for the Giants to draft McCarthy at six

And the next 4 years are filled with polarizing debate. We all know where this is headed, ha!
How the hell is Brenden Rice...
bw in dc : 2/10/2024 8:40 am : link
lower than Luke McCaffrey, Lambert Smith and Javon Baker? And with a 5th round grade...

NFW.

Anyway, this is such a good WR class. I like Thomas, McConkey and Corley as much as any WR in this class.

The OL depth is unbelievable.

I wouldn’t love that pick but at least it would tell us that they recognize the need to upgrade the position. Ignoring the position completely would be a much more terrifying outcome. For many reasons
Based On These Rankings
Bernie : 2/10/2024 8:50 am : link
1. Nabers or Odunze
2. T’Vondre Sweat
2. Ja’Tavion Sanders
3. Zack Zinter
4. Christian Haynes
5. Josh Proctor
6. Michael Furtney

Offense heavy, but that’s just the way the board fell.

I agree. I've got no issue drafting any QB there, the Giants just need to identify quickly whether he's the guy or not and not wait too long.
If rehab is going ok, nothing wrong with grabbing Jordan Travis late.
ThomasG : 2/10/2024 8:55 am : link
Prefer him over the 2nd tier QBs anyway.

At some point 1925 Giants Drive will notice, or someone will tell them, that you are allowed to draft QBs just like any other position. Even if you believe you have your QB1 already.

Amazing isn't it? Not since 2019 which is an eternity in the NFL.

You mean like Davis Webb and Kyle Lauletta?
Good top 45 or so

I have a few quibbles, but nothing major.

Yes, I mean exactly like that. Take a swing on the position every now.

Hopefully a properly educated swing though versus someone who's more interested in scouting horses.
Every now

Would not be a shocker if one of the QBs outside the "Top 3" goes way higher than expected!

Scouting Combine

in 2-1/2 weeks followed by pro days. Should be fun time where lots of shifts and some changes are likely.
He has Bo Nix

ranked 26th and dropping to the NYG at 37.

Well, if one of the Big 3 is there and Schoen passes, that would be the debate, IMV.

But if Schoen goes all in on McCarthy there is no debate as long as he starts pronto.
Pretty understandable likelihood

5 QBs go in 1st.

Looks Like a Trade Down if
varco : 2/10/2024 10:41 am : link
The Top Three are gone, down to where you can grab a McCarthy or Nix (if they believe in them) while adding more choices to plug the roster holes. That said, it would drive me nuts if they actually did that and used the extra choices on some flaky CB or WR. They need to build the lines and Big Men are needed, badly.

There’s a lot of good OL, DL talent in late 1st through 3rd. Giants have three picks already in that area. Trading down is only an option if there’s a stupid overpay.
If the Giants miss out on the top 3 QB's at 6
Jay on the Island : 2/10/2024 11:37 am : link
Then my dream scenario in that situation would be for them to land Malik Nabers at 6 and then trade into the early 20's to select JJ McCarthy.

We could also trade down and reach-draft 2 or 3 players!
Gonna nit pick a little,

but that's really high for Christian Jones.
Draft comments
Colin@gbn : 2/10/2024 12:49 pm : link
Hello: Just 75 days to the draft. Thanks again for the plug MS. Mush appreciated. Good comments too. Couple of points. OT Jones may be a little higher than most other analysts have him, but he had a terrific Senior Bowl week where he was the best OT on the week plus he's been moving up boards around the league for some time. And Mccaffrey/Rice is a tough call re two guys from football royalty families. In the end it seems to come down to productive and versatility for LM.

Just to confirm our rankings aren't based on much on how where we have players ranked but where we hear NFL teams have them graded. And there are a couple of things I should note. First, the top 3 QBs look to be locks but the next three are all over the board. Indeed you get the feeling that teams themselves really aren't sure what to make of them.

The other thing we noted was that the first 15-20 guys were pretty straightforward but the sense one gets that after that is there are a lot of players with very similar grades. That's especially the case at both WR and OT where there anywhere from 6-12 guys who are virtually interchangeable when it comes to where they rank.

What does all that means for the Giants? Who knows. In fact I am really reluctant to do a new mock in large part because I really have no idea what the Giants will do. The one thing I would be surprised they would do is trade back in the first for a QB. Indeed I don't ever recall a team ever doing that especially if one is targeting a particularly QB; you just don't want someone to jump you. If the Giants did want to move for a QB it is far more likely that they would try and trade back up into the first if one they liked came into range.

I am also really intrigued by what they do with their second day picks, because I feel the top 100 is really talented this year (after that maybe not so much). I'd really like to see them get a bigger DE type guy. I've been mocking Darius Robinson to them but he was arguably the best player overall in Mobile and appears destined to go higher than 37. Whatever I'd really like t see them go heavy on defensive front guys once they get the QB-WR-OT stuff sorted out.

Schoen already said they need to address the position. However, that doesn't necessarily mean drafting a QB. Free agency and trades are still an option. (Remember, the Packers traded a first for Brett Favre.) It's pretty definite the Giants will do something about the QB room. But no matter what they do, there will be fans who say it wasn't enough, or the wrong move.

M.S. : 2/10/2024 1:52 pm : link

You make very good points about trading down to pick up a QB... much more likely the trade goes in the other direction such as the Giants trading back up into Round One. Trading down for a QB is really wishful thinking on my part since I'm loath to give up both 2nd rounders given the current state of the Giants roster. Conversely, a slight trade down accrues another pick which I'm all for!

Quick question: Assuming the top 3 QBs are off the Board when the Giants are called to the podium, what would you do as of today -- WR at #6, or some other position?
Pick at 6
Colin@gbn : 2/10/2024 2:00 pm : link
MS: If it were me I'd really want to take a pass rusher but I don't see any that would be worth the pick. The value at the spot are the WRs and certainly the Giants could use a true #1 elite receiver. Could make that group really tough to defend.
I love how all these analysts had Jayden Daniels as a second rounder
BleedBlue46 : 2/10/2024 9:33 pm : link
Deep into the cfb season but they've all suddenly changed their tune. A few here saw Jayden Daniels as a top qb prospect way back in September, October. Will be interesting to see where he goes, hopefully he slips a bit and we can still get him but I doubt it. Analysts are going to be wrong about where McCarthy goes too. He will be picked top 15, the 23-45 ratings he is seeing are way off imo. I can see BBI going wild with tons of posters just going off mock drafts and stats claiming we got Daniel Jones 2.0 by taking JJ at #6. It'll be madness, I'll have popcorn ready.
