Maybe this is obvious but with this news + the fact that Jerod Mayo in one of his opening press conferences said (paraphrasing) that they were going to ‘select a player at a very important position so do the math’ - seems like the Pats are almost certain to draft a QB at 3. I think the looking to sign a vet QB thing can still be true but I do not see them passing on a QB at 3 or trading down.

Do not count on draft only. Pats will look to reload quickly here.

lol, I see what you did there
Please, you sound like you're talking about 5 year Daniel who is worthy of a backup role instead of starting role.
If you don't think physical skills aren't important watch Mac Jones attempt to play QB in the NFL.
The Pats would be extremely fortunate to get any draft pick(s) for him. Just cut the guy.
Mayo isn’t making the call there. GM by committee with their scouting directors involved and the Krafts will have ultimate say.

It wasn't Belichick. Belichick wanted to wait to draft Davis Mills on day two but the FO kept pushing for Mac Jones so BB relented.

Belichick was kind of sold by Saban on Jones.

Where did you hear that? Saban and Belichick are very tight. If you watched the HBO doc "The Art of Coaching...", with Saban and Belichick, it's clear BB leaned heavily on Saban for insights about draft prospects...
And last I checked, BB was the FO... ;)

According to a new report by The Athletic, Patriots scouts grew frustrated with Belichick ignoring their input. But after Nick Caserio left to become the Houston Texans' general manager in 2021, Belichick vowed to take a more collaborative approach to the draft.
Reportedly, while Belichick liked Jones as a prospect, he would have preferred to wait and instead take Davis Mills to address their quarterback need. Ultimately, though, the veteran coach decided to listen to his scouts' advice and take Jones at No. 15 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Doubt Maye drops.
And he put up amazing numbers versus Minnesota! Can't believe he's not being handed a 50 million dollar a year contract!
Quote:
Jones just needs better protection. Jones needs playmakers at WR. The Patriots have done everything possible to screw Jones up. Nobody arrives earlier and works harder than Jones. They should be patient with Jones!
Haha. Nice.
Excellent comp. At the end of season with Pats/BB divorce rumors swirling, the line that BB ruined Mac Jones was floated.

But what FA QB? The 35 year-olds Cousins or Tannehill. Jacoby Brisset? Mayfield who the Bucs will probably resign before FA? Slim pickings.
They relied on defense, run game, and ran a QB friendly short passing game. McDaniels designed it basic and had a good relationship with Jones.
