This came up in the SB thread, but I felt it deserved its own thread. What a transitional period we are in at the QB position right now. You go back a few years and you have Brady, Brees, Eli, Roethlisberger, Romo, Rivers, Ryan, and more all playing in the same era.
Now you have Mahomes who is obviously great, Allen hasn’t won but is clearly a great player, and then it’s kind of up in the air:
Giants: who knows
Washington: who knows
Dallas: Prescott
Eagles: Hurts
Lions: Goff
Bears: Fields?
Packers: Love (promising)
Vikings: Cousins (old)
Tampa: Mayfield
New Orleans: Carr
Panthers: Young
Atlanta: who knows
SF: Purdy
Rams: Stafford (old)
Seattle: Geno Smith
Arizona: Murray
Bills: Allen
Dolphins: Tua
Patriots: who knows
Jets: Rodgers (old)
Steelers: Pickett
Ravens: Jackson (excellent but injuries typically derail him)
Bengals: Burrow (see above, gets hurt a lot)
Browns: Watson
KC: Mahomes
Denver: who knows
Raiders: who knows
Chargers: Herbert (has the ability)
Houston: Stroud (big time promise)
Jaguars: Lawrence (needs to hit next level)
Tennessee: who knows
Colts: Richardson (has the athleticism)
Until proven otherwise....imo
That is how we won our last 2
NFC is there for taking if Giants play their cards right and get their QB.
Mahomes is generational and would be HOFer if he retired right now. This is true.
But cmon, Joe burrow? Man is incredible.
Josh Allen... beast.
Lamar jackson has a solar we've never seen in the nfl. Second to none and he's almost there but can't get past the last hurdle.
I think herbert is very talented. Lawrence has the traits but needs to put it together. That's not to mention the mod tear guys who are putting up crazy numbers like tua etc. Or the young bucks who may show out next season (e.g. stroud, richardson)
I think there is just as much good qb play these days as before.
Until we fix the o line no qb we get will be successfull.
Until we fix the o line no qb we get will be successfull.
You didn’t watch the game did you? Mahomes killed SF in the second half when they came after him, especially down the stretch.
This idea that all QBs are basically the same and the Oline determines wins and losses in the NFL is 30 years outdated. KC built a dynasty with largely mediocre Oline play.
League QBs in transition as Marino, Young, Aikman, and Elway had all retired in recent memory.
Young gun QBs still known as playoff chokers mostly (Peyton, McNabb, Culpepper).
A majorly hyped, generational QB 2004 QB class waiting in the wings.
Who is going to stop Mahomes much like Brady in 2004? Maybe the Giants can the prince that was promised once again. Do it schoen.
Until we fix the o line no qb we get will be successfull.
Do you watch the games with your eyes closed?
My god
We can say that we do not have QB on our roster who can win a championship. We all agree.
It is also true to say that a guy like Mahomes can absolutely win more games for the Giants if he was our QB, but likely cannot win a SB with this current roster.
So, "IF" you agree that the Giants are not winning the SB even if we were fortunate enough to add Mahomes to THIS CURRENT roster, then WTF are we talking about?
What this all means is yeah we need to get a franchise QB this off season. However, do not expect miracles from the guy until we figure out some other areas of need.
If the QB doesn’t have to too 5% skillet, you are better off going for a Dak Prescott, Jalen Hurts, Kirk Cousins, Brock Purdy, Geno Smith, who may not have any elite traits, but were consistent starters in college that can efficiently operate an offense, and can be had 2nd or later.
I'm not saying to do it in round 1 every year, but yeah I'd draft one every year. It's the one position that has the best chance of appreciating in value.
Stay on the plus side of the comp pick formula, accumulate extra picks, use one on a QB. Spend lots of resources scouting QBs.
The biggest problem the Giants have is that they treat the QB like it's an unassailable public office. No effort has been made to challenge Jones in 5 years, and no effort was made to challenge Manning in the prior 16. That mindset needs to change.
Outside of Mahomes (top) and then Josh Allen and Joe Burrow, there isn't consistent and high level playing QB's playing right now. Don't tell me Dak and Lamar - they have not shown the capability of winning the real big games. Lamar scored 10 points when it mattered. His team's PPG is 16 when he has started. His defense stifled Mahomes and the Chiefs. That's on their offense. Others: Hurts had one year of high level and a lot depended on his line and supporting cast. Same goes for Purdy, to me.
Until we fix the o line no qb we get will be successfull.
This makes zero sense. Mahomes would dominate behind the Giants line.
