was tough to see. Incredible what can happen to a gigantic man. He’s withered away. And what a cruel disease. I understand the mind stays basically intact, so ALS basically puts you in a prison inside your own failing body.
It is very sad and happy he was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame
The man was a physical specimen - HUGE! To see him now in bed at about 120 lbs(?) with a breathing tube is so sad. He and the "Danimal" (Dan Hampton) might have been the best DT team in history?
ALS is the worst. My grandmother died of it during the beginning of the pandemic. First she lost her sense of taste/smell, speech went next, then her motor skills deteriorated. It was very rough on the family
Agreed. He just didn't play with a defense that had a special name like "The 46"...
.
I think Marshall was overshadowed because LT played behind him in the defense. McMichael got in, so good for him seeing he has ALS. Saw his story a few mos. back, not a pretty sight for sure.
in 1987 on MNF. It was the Season Opener and a matchup between the previous two SB Champs. The game was deemed Super Bowl XXI and a half. It had HIGE numbers. I was 10 years old and remember it well. One of the most frustrating games ever. I've ALWAYS hated those Bears teams and wanted to skewer them. While I personally respect and like Mongo (love the name btw, lol, as many may have noticed), I don't think he's a Hall of Famer. I'm super sympathetic considering his present condition and want him to be able to enjoy his induction ceremony of course.
It just seems that the Hall of Fame is getting watered down. Dan Hampton got in easily due to his great relationship with the media. His last game was against the Parcells Giants btw in January of '91 at Giants Stadium when the NYG kicked their teeth on 31-3 on their way to their second Super Bowl title. The fact that the voters took FOREVER to induct Harry Carson is a joke. He was WAAY more deserving than Mongo is. The process is a joke.
RE: Marshall and McMichael played different positions
We all know that. The point is that they were complimentary players on those great defenses (LT, Carson, and Banks were featured on the NYG) and (Dent, Singletary, and Hampton were featured on the Bears). Leonard was the 1985 Defensive Lineman of the year. A significant feat. The man was a monster.
I recall him mentioning that he was the best 3-4 DE in the league during his time. I think he was right. McMichael started off with the Pats as a LB and was cut. I think he was there in 1980, signed as undrafted free agent, when Parcells was there. The Bears picked him up and turned him into a DT and the rest is history. Super Bowl 20 against the Pats was personal for him for a reason. He was tough, but was undersized and could be run on. The Giants did just that against him with their interior OL a couple of times.
and it’s an awful disease. Death sentence. Not much treatment. Very rapidly he went from ok, to needing a walker, to now he can’t even voluntarily move his arm from his lap to the power chair arm. His speech is grunts. All the while your brain is fine because it’s the brain/muscle connections that go, so you watch yourself deteriorate and lose your independence. He now uses a vision tracker on a tablet mounted in front of him to “talk”.

That "Lou Gehrig's" disease = nasty stuff.
Wasn't Marshall a DE? I thought McMichael was interior?
Completely
