AROCK1000 : 2/16/2024 12:21 pm
Mike Tanenbaum put this one on the table, and I am not sure what to make of it...
DJ for Deshaun and a 2nd
DW has 3 yrs left at $50MM which is fully guaranteed.
My gut says no....

Watson is no longer a good qb

Add that contract and the misconduct and it’s a no way
Sure
Br00klyn : 2/16/2024 12:26 pm : link
Let’s just trade for the worst contract in the league, what could go wrong?
I like Watson...
bw in dc : 2/16/2024 12:26 pm : link
but he's still working off the rust and I'm not sure he's going to get back to his 2020 form. So, no.

And most of all, there is NFW Mara is going to have Watson as the face of the franchise at QB. This is definitely where he'd pull the ownership card.

Hell, I recall he shot this idea down a few years ago...
Interesting how Watson is a no, but Kerry Collins was a yes.

There's a reason Tannenbaum is unemployed.

0 chance the Giants trade for a set offender.

This is typical 'look at me' ESPN off-season BS.

From what I remember, Collins...
1. mistakenly thought he had an n-word pass with Muhsin Muhammed because he and other Carolina receivers jokingly called each other racial slurs. He did not, and they almost came to blows.
2. was an alcoholic

Was there anything else that I'm missing? Is it that vs. serial sexual coercion?

I can see why people would be willing to give Collins a chance and not Watson. Those are different levels of seriousness imv.

On top of that, Collins wasn't carrying a $63 annual million cap hit for three more years.

I'd throw in that social media wasn't really a thing back then and there wasn't as much backlash to deal with when bringing in a controversial player.

Every nfl owner is going to sign off on the QB. Doesn’t mean Mara is choosing the qb. And it also doesn’t mean he’s choosing players. He’s the owner for fuck’s sake. The qb is basically the face of the team. Of course the owner has say there. Again, it doesn’t mean Mara is scouting and dictating which qb is drafted or brought in nor does it mean he’s dictating who stays.

Think.

Good. Watson is a creep. An owner has every right to veto that move.
Even if Watson didn't have the off field bullshit
logman : 2/16/2024 1:22 pm : link
he doesn't have it anymore.

They can keep Watson, Jones can stay in NY, and they can just give up the 2.
Don't even consider, for a few reasons
Matt M. : 2/16/2024 1:39 pm : link
One, he still hasn't looked like the same player. Two, injuries are a concern for him as well. Three, his off the field problems. Four, his deal is worse than Jones.

I think Watson was getting closer last year before the injury. But there are certainly still doubts.

And while Watson isn't fat, but he's gotten thicker. I think it would be wise for him to get leaner this offseason.
Watson
Toth029 : 2/16/2024 1:57 pm : link
Checked out and hasn't been nearly as good.

His record was 5-1 this year as a starter and only had one good game. The Browns have a terrific supporting cast and he still hasn't lived up to even half of what his contract is.

Oh and he's a rapist.

^This. I saw most of that exchange this morning, and the other three panelists correctly said this would be a terrible trade for the Giants. And that was just because of Watson's health and his monstrous contract. As someone else said, there is no way in hell Mara would let Watson be the "face" of this franchise.

NO.

Why would anyone take on the player (at this point), the person, and possibly the worst contract in NFL history?
Why?
Section331 : 2/16/2024 3:38 pm : link
Even if you want to overlook Watson offenses, he’s been awful since coming back. Besides, there is a less than zero chance John Mara signs off on replacing St Daniel with a sex offender.
Just looking at the numbers.....
Kmed6000 : 2/16/2024 3:48 pm : link
Would have to be a post 6/1 trade and Cleveland would have a dead cap in 2024 of 17M and 2025 of 44M.

Giants would have a dead cap hit of 23M and 22M in 24'/25.

Giants would be responsible for 46M in salary for Watson for 3 years. So in 2025:

22M dead cap hit for Jones
46M salary for Watson

68M tied to Watson. Doesn't seem feasible for a guy that sucked.
.
Banks : 2/16/2024 4:17 pm : link
Lmao at the Collins comparison. As noted, Christian Peter would be a better example and he was largely hated across all message boards.

As for the proposal, no. Beyond on his issues with women, he has looked terrible. I'm not sure he regains for. I sure wouldn't bet on it

Well Watson would be a trade for a 50 mill a year contract and Collins was a cheap free agent acquisition signing... So yea they are similar moves I guess.

But I get the idea you are insinuating something else.

The OL matters.

Yes, get an elite QB when available. But 2024? 2025? 2026?

It likely will take 1 to 2 years to build a functional line.

I will agree that there are many possible franchise QBs this year, where there likely won't be as many in the following couple of years.
