Cut Waller sign Shultz/Sign Williams

Jripper4201 : 2/20/2024 11:30 am
Very simply Dalton Shultz would make an excellent tight end for the Gmen. Personally the Gmen rolled the dice on Waller in trading a bum prospect but it didn’t work out. Best to go get a guy who plays hard and stays on the field. Signing Connor Williams would boost the inside of the Giants o line. Two solid moves to fix some issues with this team IMO.
the same Connor Williams

who tore his ACL 9 weeks ago??
Schultz might get tagged
UConn4523 : 2/20/2024 11:35 am : link
and it’s probably smart to do so from the Texans POV. They have a ton of cap and wouldn’t have to commit to him long term. TE is a really tough position to give long term contracts to IMO.
Texans
Sammo85 : 2/20/2024 11:43 am : link
are looking to spend some money around Stroud while he's on rookie deal. Don't see them letting Schultz leave right now.

If anything Texans are likely to maybe add an OL, possibly a big ticket playmaker on offense to boot.
how do you know the pick traded for Waller

Yes because they can get him on the cheap while he’s recovering.

We’ll see what happens. If he doesn’t get tagged, which I don’t see happening. I mean who was the last tight end tagged ? He would would be a great signing for the Gmen.
Engram was tagged
UConn4523 : 2/20/2024 11:51 am : link
and then after signed a $41m deal with $24m guaranteed. Thats basically what Schultz will want to emulate or beat on the open market. The tag is very much in play.
And with all our needs
UConn4523 : 2/20/2024 11:52 am : link
giving that kind of a contract to a TE that may have peaked isn’t something I’d like to do. He’s a good not great player.

So we pay him for a year to sit out? That’s an awful use of resources for a 6-win team.

Very disappointing year for Waller.

We can’t afford that kind of production again from the TE position.
Schultz is one of the reasosn Stroud signed...
sb from NYT Forum : 2/20/2024 12:42 pm : link
...he was kind of a security blanket, but more so because he he is a quality vet that makes plays.

I don't see Houston letting him go.

$10 million for 500 yards and one TD ($14 million this coming season). That's worse than the much reviled Brandon Myers did for us. It's more like Will Tye or Larry Donnell.
Find Another Bellinger
Samiam : 2/20/2024 12:56 pm : link
Find a TE in the draft in the 4th round plus or minus a round who can block and catch a pass. I want a 2 way TE, doesn't need to be a star on a rookie contract. The Giants going with 3 TEs last year and online who was a good blocker was a colossal mistake by management.

I'd stay with Waller for 1 more year. Clearly was hampered all season and I imagine the injury was a lot worse than we were led to believe considering Jones and Waller had an instant connection during camp and the reviews out of camp were fantastic for him. The hamstring lingered all season and you could tell his cutting and overall comfort level being out there was not good.

On the other hand, I guess we would be banking on him staying healthy all year which would probably not be smart.

The third round pick we received in the Toney trade was used in the trade to obtain Waller and his injuries.

No shit. Two separate transactions, which should be evaluated as such.

Reckon they will keep Waller at least for one more season.

They must, and I can't emphasize that enough, must draft a TE sometime in the third day. Preferably another Y TE.

I like Waller, but he’s been plagued by hamstring injuries 3 years running now. I don’t see that changing for a 32 yr old. The economics alone probably mean he’s a Giant next season, but if possible, I’d move on.
this management team has to stop trying
Dave on the UWS : 2/20/2024 4:02 pm : link
to build a roster on "hope".
Hoping Waller stays healthy
Hoping Jones stays healthy
Hoping Barkley stays healthy

move on

(and yes I know Neal has been hurt a lot and they are hoping he stays healthy. Somehow, I feel that falls into a different category of hope).

Waller would have to take a significant paycut to stay. The injuries are the reason we got him on the cheap. Id say we would have been better off with a 3rd rounder and the extra cash. It was worth the gamble at the time, but next season he will have 3 years in a row of significant injuries so maybe he just is what he is now.

To the OP, I dont think Shultz is a good option for the Giants and I dont think he would want to come here unless we overpay. I'd like to see Bellinger back in the role he had as a rookie to see if he can get back to what we wanted and either draft more of a blocker or sign a cheaper option.

As for Williams, I dont think he is an option. We need to stay away from the injury gambles. They have not been good to us. Get a healthy guy and pay him. If he has an injury then it's just bad luck. If Williams comes in and can't play he's not helping the team improve. You gamble on Williams when you have a guy on the last year of his contract and you sign Williams to a 2 year deal for when he's healthy. Not a luxury we can afford.
Austin Hooper
Blue Dog : 2/20/2024 4:50 pm : link
The new TE coach worked with Hooper when he was Titans pass coordinator in '22, Hooper is a reliable chain mover and cheap. He would cost a fraction of Shultz and not require cutting Waller for more dead money than it would actually save and help keep him healthy. He would be an immense upgrade over Cager for not much money.

Before Williams injury he was one of the best blocking interior lineman in the league. He’s better than anyone this team has had in a decade inside. So I don’t see the issue with wanting a legitimate gamer on this team. Apparently you’re ok with the trash this team has lined up on the trenches the last year. As for Shultz another upgrade that would help the Giants and our QBs instantly over the often injured and inconsistent Walller.

As the other poster said, you can't conflate the two. We can all say Tony was a bad pick, in hindsight anyway. But using that 3rd round pick we received for Tony on Wallet, I mean Waller, is NOT the same as trading Tony for Waller. We wasted that pick on an injury riddled player (at least so far in his career.) We should have used it on a healthy player coming out of college.

How does signing an OL that is likely to miss all of next season going to help the Giants next season?
