I feel like being a Giants and Mets fan is just waiting for the next shoe to drop.

I have Cohen has a plan if Senga is out for a long period of time or even the season.
At least you got the Giants instead of the Jets. I've become one of those annoying people who roots for the Mets even though I'm truly a Yankees fan (someone close in my life with big ties to the Mets). Really hope this is just a blip for you guys.
There is zero silver lining to a major injury to Kodai Senga. That being said, *if* he needs TJ or something of that nature, it means @mets would almost certainly have him under contract through 2028 (his 2025 opt out would be all but unreachable)
if it ends up the worst the only fortunate thing is snell/montgomery
still available. and they would probably need to sign 1 of them not just for this year but for the future. if senga is out for 12-18 months they have 0 SP under contract next year.

that is actually another possible silver lining. at the moment he has 2 years left as a met and this one seems unlikely to be a WS contending year even if they played to the "competitive" aspirations.
so missing 1.5 years sucks, but in a way buys them more future years when they are likely to be farther along.
and if they sign snell or montgomery they arent that different this year while improving for the next few beyond that.
healthy Senga = free agent after 2 seasons (2025)
tjs Senga = 1.5 missed seasons but 3.5 seasons under contract at a discount rate from 2nd half 2025-2028 through age 35
But the Met's track record in giving straight information about injuries, especially regarding pitchers, (in fairness, they aren't the only team) is pretty suspect.
He is needed now and the addition of that type of middle of rotation arm, a horse of a lefty who eats up innings and appears to have his best still in front of him is the perfect add to this rotation now and for the future.

I wouldn't hold your breath on Montgomery...even if Senga misses substantial time.
David Stearns seems to have convinced Uncle Stevie that spending big $ on pitchers over the age of 30, is a bad/risky investment...Stearns basically said not to expect any bigs signings before the season...

David Stearns said Kodai Senga has moderate strain in the back of his right shoulder.
He will be shut down until the symptoms subside. He will not be ready for Opening Day. He will start on the IL but it’s not known how long he will be out.
RE: RE: Not sure why we haven’t signed Montgomery yet

He doesn’t want to play in NY.
He's also looking for his last big contract so shooting for the moon.
FYI, Jordan Montgomery has won double digit games (10 games last year) once in his career...His stock (and asking price) went way up as the result of last season's post season run with Texas.
Has been consistently good for the past 3 seasons and remarkably consistent . Hes far from a Texas short sample size construct unless 3 years is a small sample size
Pretty clearly there isn't a team in baseball that looks at Montgomery's time in Texas as who he is (2.79 era over 11 starts) because that would have led all of baseball. He's a very good/solid SP and a solid #2, great #3 on a contending team.
Tim Healey
@timbhealey
David Stearns said the Mets prefer that their yet-to-debut pitching prospects — Mike Vasil, Christian Scott, Dominic Hamel — pitch in the minors more.
So the rotation competition essentially is among: Tylor Megill, Joey Lucchesi, Jose Butto, Max Kranick.

So we weren't lying to Scherzer that the focus is on 2025.
(I do like Lucchesi and Butto, though)
i dont think montgomery has ever said he doesnt want to play in ny. he seemed to be cool to the idea of a reunion with yankees because of how things went when he was traded, but he's still been linked to them a fair amount despite that. the red sox are currently the prohibitive favorite to sign him in betting markets.
senga missing some time should have been expected. he threw 166 innings last year. he had some stuff on his initial physical that led them to add the tjs protections. it sucks that it's going to be opening day, but this is why they should have added someone with a track record of 150+ reliable innings.
senga threw 166 last year
severino threw 89 last year
manaea thew 117
quintana threw 75
houser threw 111
not sure there's any other team in mlb who only rostered 1 pitcher in starting rotation who threw 120+ innings last year.
sounded like for the most part he enjoyed being a Yankee.
"The Yankees did treat Montgomery well, he said, and he believed he was going to be a Yankee for life.
“When you come up homegrown they take care of you, and not everyone can pitch in Yankee Stadium,” Montgomery said. “We traded for Sonny Gray and that didn’t work out well; we traded for Joey Gallo, that didn’t work out well. When you trade for someone and they pitch in New York, you never know how it’s gonna work out. I kind of felt safe and thought I was gonna be there forever, or at least for a few more years.”"

this was the quote from Heyman after the yankees signed stroman, which could have just been covering tracks:
"Additionally, the Yankees came to believe they weren't at the top of coveted free agent Jordan Montgomery's wish list. True or not, the Yankees (and many others) assume Montgomery would prefer to return to Texas, where he helped the Rangers win their first World Series title."
with so many gms saying they are tapped out spending where all these guys (boras4) end up seems wide open.
"We don't expect Opening Day, but I do expect him to make a bunch of starts for us this year," Stearns explained. "This is not a surgical-type problem. This is something with rest and treatment -- potentially an injection -- that can move this forward."
While they have a decent amount of starting pitching depth, the loss of their de facto ace could possibly lead to the Mets jumping back into the free agent market -- though Stearns hinted that it's unlikely.
"I don't think so," he said. "We're always gonna be opportunistic and hear what's out there, but I don't think it really changes our thought process."
weird there hasn't been any kind of estimate by any news reports (at least that I read this morning)
Not specific to him, but it's one of those injuries they don't "think" is a big deal. But cautious beciuse of what it could lead to. Can't put a timeline on it because it could heal quickly and never be an issue. It could take two months and be an on again off again flair up, leads to a tweak mechanically, and then becomes a career changer.

lol
Instead of playing catch and participating in fielding drills, Senga remained inside, getting checked out by the Mets’ athletic training staff.
Mendoza said he did not know if Senga would need an MRI.
“After his side session yesterday, he came in and experienced some arm fatigue,” Mendoza said. “So he stayed inside and we’re taking a look at him.”

no we are rooting for healthy because even if he opts out they can resign him and keep him as long as they want.
but if he ends up with TJS, they get 3 extra years of control.
Jake DeGrom, for instance....
Without Senga, ouch...ugly....
I was being facetious. It seemed like some people were kind of rooting for an long-term injury.

not if it's just a strain that will heal non-surgically.
David Stearns talks about a potential timeline for Kodai Senga's return:
Surgery not expected
"The Yankees did treat Montgomery well, he said, and he believed he was going to be a Yankee for life.

time to count backwards from 400 innings lol
400
- 166 last year
= 234
so 84 innings (half season) this year would leave 150 as the o/u for 2025.
from july to oct last year he pitched exactly...84.2 innings.

i dont expect stearns to cave on his approach but i think clearly all of mlb is waiting for the boras4 to change theirs. who knows what happens when they do.
Mets RHP Kodai Senga expected to miss Opening Day due to posterior capsule strain - ( New Window )

Tylor Megill
Sucks but could be way worse.
