Free Agency - Defense

I know the Giants offense has been holding this team back but we can’t ignore the defense.

NYG has a big decision to make on Xavier McKinney. Many think he will be important to bring back because our new DC Bowen likes to run a lot of Cover 2 which many think will be a perfect fit for McKinney.

He will not be cheap to re-sign. But with Belton, Pinnock and the unknown Gerverius Owens, can the Giants look to invest more in the other glaring hole, which I believe is Edge Rusher.

I really like the idea of signing Bryce Huff. He is an up and coming player and we need a viable presence opposite KT. Huff is very strong and has a solid 2 way game. Edge is a very important position. Bowen doesn’t tend to blitz often so improving the front will be important.

What do you guys think is a better investment Huff or McKinney, if we had to choose?

If fans are disappointed in Ojulari's run stopping ability, they'll be pretty concerned about Huff as well. My understanding is the Jets only play him on passing downs.
Carl Lawson ?

Still only 28. Would be a nice get on a 2-3 year deal

Is he healed up from his injury?
Edge

I am not expecting a major investment at Edge this offseason.

If we decide to bring in a higher value edge, I expect it would be Danielle Hunter who is extremely close to Andre Patterson from all reports.

Edge Defenders I could see NYG bringing in include:

A.J Epenesa, Bills (36.1% snaps / 6.5 sacks) - drafted by Bills during Schoen's tenure.

D.J Wonnum, Vikings (73.2% snaps / 8 sacks in 2023) - played under Andre Patterson in 2020 and 2021.

Denico Autry, Titans (66.7% snaps /11.5 sacks in 2023) - played under Shane Bowen.
If he’s available

I’d make a run at L’Jerius Sneed. He’d be the perfect guy to takeover CB1 with Banks a high end No. 2. If he’s available I’d make him the top priority over McKinney. He’s exactly what this team needs.

______________

I think the Giants intend to develop Banks as the #1 corner.
Mind you FA defense

should be considered after first focusing on acquiring top Offensive lineman. Obviously you have 3 main guys that will be available. Unfortunately, they are going to be resigned or they will be out of the Giants price range. Josh Allen, Brian Burns, Danielle Hunter.

Giants will most likely go to the bargain box if they want to sign an edge rusher. Imo, they should go after Leonard Floyd. Just a quick-twitch player with an explosive first step. He was huge for the Bills. Some other options would be, Bryce Huff, Jonathan Greenard, AJ Espena, Dorace Armstrong, and Denico Autry.

Giants should also look into a CB. Possibly Sean Murphy Bunting, Steven Nelson, or Kendall Fuller. As far as Safety, If McKinney doesn't resign, go get CJ Gardner Johnson. Dude is a player wherever he goes.

He tore the Achilles 3 years ago and last season had a back injury I expect him to be ready to go. He shouldn’t cost a ton and should be had with some incentive laden contract. I really liked him at Auburn coming out
I do agree that Bowen may influence the decision

on X. Look at how Balt utilized Kyle Hamilton, I could see X playing the same kind of role, and they used a bunch of 3-safety looks.

While I think we should be wary of assuming that our new DC will run the exact same defense his former boss did, I have to think he had influence on how the DB’s were utilized.
Regarding another Edge, that is clearly

on the priority list. I have concerns about Huff in the run game, if the price isn’t too high, I think Van Ginkel is a better option.
Edge's cost a fortune
Biteymax22 : 2/22/2024 9:38 am : link
in FA and if we bring in more, they have to be guys that can hold the edge which isn't something Huff can do.

If we don't draft a QB at 6, I wouldn't bat an eye if we took our EDGE1 over a WR.

Yeah I was thinking an Edge might be a possibility. Who do you like? Latu, Verse or Turner? I am leaning Turner as he is just non stop motor.
Autry
Toth029 : 2/22/2024 1:57 pm : link
Would be ideal if he's not looking for a pay day - which he shouldn't be given his age. He has been very productive though.
CB
Big_Pete : 2/22/2024 5:01 pm : link
A cheaper free agent that I am keeping an eye on is CB Isaac Yiadom. in 2023, he signed a 1 year / $1,232,500 deal with the Saints.

in 2023, Yiadom played 46.5% of defensive snaps and 54.4% of special teams snaps. He has 20 solo tackles, 11 assists, 14 Pass Def, 1 int and 1 fum rec.

He seems like the cheaper depth player we will look to add.
I've been eyeing up both Autry and Van Ginkel.
Angel Eyes : 2/22/2024 9:36 pm : link
I like Van Ginkel's utility in particular; he can line up anywhere and make a play and hopefully won't be caught flat-footed against screens.
