Your Favorite Draft Year

christian : 2/22/2024 7:59 pm
Not necessarily your favorite outcome, but your favorite lead up, debate, etc.

For me it was 2002 and the lead up to drafting Shockey. Picking a TE was definitely on everyone's radar -- but would it be Shockey, Graham, or Stevens?

That was a great pre-draft period on BBI.

The lead up was a blast.

I don't even honestly remember who I wanted. I really like Collins so I probably wanted Gallery or Taylor.

NO 1st round pick for the Giants in 2005; yet still were able to draft Justin Tuck, Brandon Jacobs, and Corey Webster; all of which who very much contributed to not one, but two championships.

Thank you, Ernie.

because it was one of my first years at BBI and there was so much energy and debate about BPA v Need (especially WR).

I wanted WRs, and we did grab Jurevicius and Alford in rounds two and three, but the rallying cries for Faneca were awesome (see Joey in Virgina).

This place was bloody and great as we all scrambled trying to get information without the benefit of internet search.

1981 ....

a new regime coming in from a successful org, and two top picks in hand. I’m always really into draft season but I was other-level obsessed that year.
1986 draft was great ....

with already a great defense they took like 6 defensive players in the first 3 rounds?

They had many extra picks from trades .... Erik Howard, Mark Collins, Pepper Johnson ... what a haul.

The lead up to 2000 was a hell of a time on BBI.

It's bonkers Tom Brady and Ron Dayne were picked in the same draft.

arniefez : 2/22/2024 10:40 pm : link
compared to the road not taken they were the product of a historic opportunity lost. The GM was not going to allow players to turn down his contract offers, even if they were All Pro's or dare to tell him where they did or did not wanted to play. Combined with the HC not having any influence after the 1983 season when the GM wanted to fire him. Oh what could have been if the HC got his way.

Jump into my Time Machine and go back to early 1984. You're the NY Giants GM and based on your choices at that time you could wind up stocking the 1986 Giants roster with the players on either list 1 or list 2. Which list would you choose?

List 1

Eric Dorsey
Mark Collins
Erik Howard
Pepper Johnson
Greg Lasker
John Washington

List 2

Eric Dorsey - Probably would have picked an OT instead
Erik Howard
John Washington
Mark Haynes
Reggie White

The road taken was glorious and the only sustained great period of Giants football in the Super Bowl era. Who knows if the other road would have lead to 2 Lombardi trophies, no Lombardi trophies or several more than 2 Lombardi trophies.

But if you put me in that Time Machine back to 1984 I'm pairing Reggie White with Lawrence Taylor and taking my chances.
2005 wasn't anything exciting to watch
Blue Dream : 2/23/2024 2:09 am : link
But it was one of the best and most important in team history. 4 picks 4 starters 2 franchise icons and a corner who made the biggest interception in team history. Webster, Jacobs, Tuck, and Eric Moore. Even Moore who wasn't anything special was a solid starter for a number of years. Great for a 7th rounder. That draft combined with that year's FA signings was the foundation for our championships.

all of the subsequent drafts
Steve in Greenwich : 2/23/2024 10:09 am : link
after 2004; after being on BBI and getting a play by play of exactly how the draft would unfold I thought that I was in an exclusive club that got to know everything before it actually unfolded. Then the offseason of 05 came and all the inside reports on Kareem Mackenzie, Burress and Kendrell Bell/Antonio Pierce came and I was hooked like an addict to BBI every day expecting to get the play by play once again. At that point the hit rate of info posted on the site was so high and I was still young enough and naïve enough to believe everything I read as fact, it made the entire draft season so wild with the ups and downs of what I read.

Over the years I started to realize that not everything I read is true, and even when stuff may be true they may not come into fruition, and the checking for updates on bated breath calmed down, but for the first couple of years after 2004 it was like I was obsessively checking the forum from February to end of April just waiting for the next bombshell to drop.

We were planning on trading our draft for Orlando Pace per Gloveone #2! That was a wild ride
2007 was also pretty fun

I remember there were a lot of Reggie Nelson fans and a few Brandon Meriwether fans. I know others wanted WRs liked Dwayne Bowe and Robert Meachem.

I don't think Aaron Ross was on a lot of our radars. Seemed like most of us were focused on guys like Nelson, Bowe, Meachem, Meriwether, Beason and I believe Staley as well. I think there was a hope for some going in that Timmons would fall into our laps.

'86 was my favorite too. Obviously LT is a special case, but for a draft as a whole, this was the best IMO.

Second and third round picks are the meat of your team from what I gather!!! I don't know for sure the bust/success rate compared to 1st rounders, however, pretty sure thats the sweet spot
You said favorite, not best
David B. : 2/24/2024 10:23 am : link
My favorite was easily getting Thibodeaux and Neal in the first 7 picks.

It was the only I remember the Giants having 2 HIGH 1st round picks, and the night of the draft, they seemed to nail BOTH of them at their two highest need positions. I was over the moon.

As others have said, the Eli draft was crazy. I was shocked, but really pleased they got him.

I liked the Shockey draft because need and value lined up perfectly.

Most drafts I'm in more of a cautious, wait and see mode.

The ones I was most pissed about were Apple, Barkley (nothing against him -- just the position, and I wanted a QB), Dayne.

I've been wrong about a lot of players in both directions. Never dreamed OBJ would become as good as he did. Never dreamed Flowers would be such a bust.
