GBN Draft Report: Pre-Combine 3-Round Mock Draft

M.S. : 2/23/2024 8:41 am

In light of their recent Big Board Update of 218 draft prospects, our friends at GBN have decided to generate a 3-Round, Pre-combine Mock Draft. And as always, please note GBN's caution that,

"...we have no idea, at least maybe past the first half dozen or so picks, which particular teams will take which individual players; however, what we are hoping to do is give some idea, based on the latest information, what players are likely to be available at different phases of the draft."

I think most BBIers will like this Mock since it gives the Giants a shiny new QB and a shiny new WR, just maybe not in the order you would prefer. They also mock an interior lineman to the Giants which is a desperate need. How desperate? According to the February 23rd edition of The Athletic, below is a ranking of the Giants positional needs ahead of Free Agency and the Draft:

(1) Offensive Line
(2) Wide Receiver
(3) OLB / EDGE
(4) Cornerback
(5) Quarterback

About #5, this is what The Athletic said:

"This could easily be No. 1 on the list depending on how you view Daniel Jones. If you think the Giants need to find a new face of the franchise, then QB is easily the team’s top priority... If you think the Giants should give Jones more time to prove he can be the guy, then the position falls farther down the list."

I just drafted on a simulator the same draft....

Outside of my 2nd Rder....was a DT.

They probably used the same simulation 🤣
My

picks in that situation:

6: J.J. McCarthy. Too high for me, but he's a QB, and they always get overdrafted. And taking him here is certainly a lot better than trading up. It's also a lot better than taking Penix. Why replace one injury-riddled QB (Jones) with another (Penix)? Crazy.

37: Xavier Leggette.

47: Christian Jones.

70: Ruke Orhorhoro. I think he's definitely a day two pick.
three

QBs in a row and then three WRs in a row. I doubt that has ever happened before, but it could this year.
I’d take that in a heartbeat
Jimmy Meatballs : 2/23/2024 9:11 am : link
Value meets need at a bunch of positions. Yes, I’d love one of the top 3 QB’s but not at the cost it will take to get there. Going into the season with Jones, Devito, and Penix is not a terrible scenario, given where the team is at. There’s no surefire star there but we still have a lotto ticket with Devito, a veteran who can mentor the young guys in Jones (at least his prep and approach), and a high ceiling rookie in Penix. Yes, you can point out the downside to all three as well. But I’d take that over losing future picks for a team with gaps all around.

And it isn't because the draft sucks. These are legit players. We are fortunate to be picking high in this draft.
Again.....if we draft Penix....that means Neal is protecting his blind
GiantBlue : 2/23/2024 9:13 am : link
side.....Do you think Joe is going to draft a left handed QB?

That is the question.

Do you think Joe will pass on a really good QB because of the current state of the OL? I sure hope not.

Andrew Thomas started at RT as a freshman at UGA, soooooo
Cooper Beebe!
IchabodGiant : 2/23/2024 9:26 am : link
Wildcat, would be all over that. Think he'll be a stud in the NFL.
Penix in the second makes a lot of sense for the Giants.
Heisenberg : 2/23/2024 9:34 am : link
That is, if you like him as a prospect, as I do.
We can always argue about the players
Chris684 : 2/23/2024 9:43 am : link
And the point on the draft at which you take them, but that is a pretty solid draft if we’re being honest.

WR, QB, Edge all addressed with picks 1, 2 and 2a. Come back to fill a huge need at interior OL in round 3.

Penix is a serious enough prospect to at least compete with Jones and give us something hopeful to look to in that QB room.

This draft would work in my opinion.
How come JJ McCarthy isn't overall #1 in this?
ThomasG : 2/23/2024 9:46 am : link
GBN should know better.
I see us getting jumped easier in the 2nd than the 1st
MotownGIANTS : 2/23/2024 9:47 am : link
due to t he cost being much lower you'll have more teams tempted to make an offer. That's why you pick the QB @ 6 picking JJ/Daniels 10 slots "high" vs losing premiums picks is a no brainer QB, WR, OG all in 2 rds with a high 3rd left.
I'd be concerned about Penix injury history
Victor in CT : 2/23/2024 9:48 am : link
but from a pure talent standpoint it's good haul.
I like it. Only question on Penix is his injury
Blue21 : 2/23/2024 9:50 am : link
history which maybe why he drops. Not as mobile from what I understand As others but certainly worthy of a second rd selection I would think.

37 or 39?
Clearwater Joe : 2/23/2024 10:01 am : link
I thought our 2nd was 39.
I will never understand why Giants fan would want another injury prone
bwitz : 2/23/2024 10:02 am : link
QB when the Giants have their own, very expensive one already. Waste of a draft pick.
Love this draft
Jim in Forest Hills : 2/23/2024 10:05 am : link
Dont know Dorlus but Nabers/Penix and Beebe is a win for me.

There’s a reason why Jones has not proven to be the guy.
I really like that draft

Just curious, if this is your big board,
barens : 2/23/2024 10:25 am : link
why do you have the Chargers taking Odenze over Nabers? I'd be very happy, but that seems unlikely.
Given what the Giants need and where they draft
M.S. : 2/23/2024 10:41 am : link
not sure it would shake out this way but would love to secure the services of DE/EDGE Jared Verse! Strong, tough and athletic. He reminds me a lot of another Florida State player the Jets drafted a couple of years ago, Jermaine Johnson. Would be a very nice complement to Kayvon Thibodeaux. Maybe the math works in the (unlikely) event the Giants trade down a few slots.
I’d be very happy getting Penix with a second round pick,
shockeyisthebest8056 : 2/23/2024 10:46 am : link
although I think there would be teams trying to trade to 32 or 33 to get him. Even though no one drafting ahead of them in second round needs a QB, the Giants might need to trade up to ensure they get him in this scenario.
I like Dallas Turner
gidiefor : Mod : 2/23/2024 10:48 am : link
but Jared Verse is a close second
No thanks on Penix
BigBlue7 : 2/23/2024 10:49 am : link
even in the 2nd

Give me Nabers and a CB if the board falls that way.

Dallas Turner works too! Several Big Boards, including GBN Draft Report and Tankathon, have him ranked a bit higher than Jared Verse.

It is a disaster scenario. Not one QB capable of being a quality starting QB in the league.

I think Penix in round 2 would be a wonderful pick
Go Terps : 2/23/2024 11:02 am : link
I think he's in the mold of the two great Giant QBs of the modern era: Simms and Eli. He'll throw the ball downfield and outside the numbers with velocity, accuracy, and decisiveness.
I'd go
BleedBlue46 : 2/23/2024 11:07 am : link
JJ McCarthy
Xavier Leggette
Kris Jenkins
Christian Haynes

Good on GBN...
bw in dc : 2/23/2024 11:16 am : link
for moving Brian Thomas, Jr into the top ten.

We really should trade Neal and snatch one of these OLs. It's okay to declare him a miss and move on. Because it's such a good crop of OL prospects...

As for the results of this mock, I like Nabers. But there is such an abundance of WRs that a trade out would make more sense to me if we can't grab any of the big three QBs...
No beefs
Andy in Halifax : 2/23/2024 11:36 am : link
I'm not a huge Penix guy but I understand the choice if we made it. Love Nabors and Dorlus picks. Can't say I know enough about the KState guy but love picking a guard there.
I'm not a fan of WR at 6
giantstock : 2/23/2024 11:45 am : link
But I don't have to be a fan of every pick and recognize many beleive Nabors to be a big time stud. If Giants can't trade down then I would like the 1st 3 picks.
I like that draft, but I probably like Penix
Section331 : 2/23/2024 11:46 am : link
more than most.
Ugh
Spider43 : 2/23/2024 11:50 am : link
Can you imagine saying this at the time, "No, let's not draft the HOF's Steve Young or Kenny Stabler here because our RT sucks"?! You get the QB first! Figure things out later on. They'll likely fall into place anyway, because you've got the most important position in all of sports right already. I'm not necessarily saying Penix is the guy, or even HOF material (though I'm fine with him in the second round), but to use the crutch about our RT sucking shouldn't be paramount in the decision-making process.
These mocks that keep showing us going
Dave on the UWS : 2/23/2024 11:55 am : link
WR and THEN QB (Penix) in rd 2, would keep the cycle of suck going. You DON'T pick a QB as a "left over" (that's how you end up with guys like Jones).
If you have a conviction on a QB and want him, DRAFT HIM AT 6.
Then continue to build the roster (WR, etc) in rd 2.

If the slam dunk QB is lefty - Lawrence, Burrow, whoever you might want to include - I agree. But I am not basing my future development target to be lefty when I know I need to replace Jones.

I know, I was just reacting to the OP's first sentence saying "In light of their recent Big Board Update of 218 draft prospects, our friends at GBN have decided to generate a 3-Round...". If they have Nabers ranked ahead of Oduze, then why have the Chargers take Oduze?
1 Prefer Odunze
Joe Beckwith : 2/23/2024 12:37 pm : link
But Nabers is more than a fine fallback.
2 Penix just does not inspire me.
3 I’m more than happy with that pick.
Barens- Johnston didn't work out for them
Dave on the UWS : 2/23/2024 12:42 pm : link
last year, a big bodied WR, so they might replace him with Odunze. (If that is their thinking, they might go with Bowers instead. Harbaugh likes his TE's).

ryanmkeane : 2/23/2024 12:47 pm : link
Don’t think Daboll is going to be interested in Penix
