The Beatles? And no offense to Rush but, I think you could sub them with any of these: The Who, AC/DC, Led Zep, Guns N' Roses, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Nirvana, Queen, The Eagles, Van Halen...
do you think the Beatles should be up there instead of U2 and even Rush?
Cmon. No list starts without the Beatles. No band had a bigger and earlier impact. No band had the batting average. It's not even close and you don't have to like them.
60's: Beatles/Stones/The Who
70's: Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Eagles, AC/DC, Queen, Springsteen, Some Metal (Priest & Sabbath)
80's: U2, long pause, Metallica, AC/DC, Van Halen (a big one for me: Iron Maiden), Bon Jovi (but not a big fan)
90's: Green Day, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, REM, GnR, Pearl Jam, Nirvana (but Cobain's death cut them short)
00's: Linkin Park?, any other suggestions
among those no one picked yet:
1. CCR
2. Wilco
3. Steve Miller Band
4. Buddy Holly & The Crickets (foundational band)
5. The Maddox Brothers and Rose (though considered a country music band, they have some deep cuts that have to be considered proto Rock)
6. Buck Owens & The Buckaroos (same explanation as above)
7. Lynard Skynard
8. Wings
9. Talking Heads
10. The Doors
I’m all-in on The Dead since the mid 80s! I was just laughing at Grey’s joke (though not the first time I heard it). The Dead changed my life, led me to my wife! I was at Strawberry Fields for the impromptu memorial when Jerry died. Started jamming with a couple of guys and before I knew it, was in the middle of a big crowd that formed around us.
We love Dead & Co, too, and went to as many shows as we could!
RE: Just for diversity . . . maybe a few groundrules
It is 2023, so getting a one band that was at their peak in each decade: 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's . . . you could even go 00's
Gotta have some longevity & be somewhat seminal in a genre
OK - I'm starting to sound like a dilettante D-bag. Sorry, but you get the idea to not have a bunch of 60's bands on the list
Be a a dilettante D-bag all you want, this is fun!
60s: Stones (I hate not putting Jimi Hendrix and the Experience here, and I think the Stones were better in the 70s than 60s, but Beggar's Banquet and Let it Bleed make it for them.
70s: Led Zep, gotta be. Stones, the Who and Queen are runners up.
80s: U2, no question in my mind. They are not even my favorite 80s band, but Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree are all-time S Tier.
90s: I guess you would have to say Nirvana, even though they with Kurt's death. My personal picks would be Soundgarden, then Alice in Chains.
Felt bad I forgot Rush on my decades list above - my bad. They cranked out decent albums like a machine for almost 20 years 1974-1993? Saw them touring Roll The Bones in my mid-20's. Always regretted not seeing them back in high school doing Moving Pictures - Great effin Album.
I think it's unfair to say Rock N Roll in general.

Beatles -greatest song writers
Led Zeppelin -greatest band: Singer, Guitarist, Drummer and Bassist
Van Halen -greatest showman, guitarist and drummer
Black Sabbath -greatest band to open the door to Heavy Metal

Way too many qualifiers and semantics come into play for me to pick four bands out of the seemingly millions of hours of music that has pierced my ears, but if I were to name the four most iconic rock n roll bands of all time, I think Fat Wally nailed it with...
Beatles, Stones, Dead, Zeppelin
Why? Well, it starts with the Beatles and Stones, they are a cut above the rest of the pack when it comes to icons. Next up is the Dead because of the folklore they bring to the table as no other band can claim such a loyal and bonded following. The fourth member, I would think, has to go to Led Zeppelin. The hey day Rock N Roll, it's heyday was the 70's, and when you think of the classic rock of the 70's, it's Zeppelin that is the first name that comes to mind in the minds of most who've lived through it (over the likes of Pink Floyd, Queen, or Bruce and E-Street, to name a few).
The Beach Boys were too 60's for consideration and once you get into the greats of the 80's (U2) and 90's the party is already over and none of them have the collection size to rival the Beatles, Stones, Dead, and Zep. And like I said, my point isn't that those four are the four greatest rock n roll bands of all time; that's a question that's hard enough to ask, let alone answer. You get bogged down in semantics debates and qualifiers before you can even get around to answering it.
RE: I don't know how you can leave The Beatles off the list
they were a product of brilliant mgmt and timing. There music is of the bubblegum empty calorie variety. Their act was admittedly groundbreaking and fun. Good hard rock. Fun. It stops there in my view.

KISS had 4 times the makeup of Alice Cooper, with a small fraction of the songwriting talent.
It's probably because their music has played so many times in your head that you grew tired of it and lost the appreciation. If you went twenty or thirty years without hearing a song of theirs and then began listening to them again, you would show them greater reverence. At least that's sort of what happened with me. I went through a long stretch of time where their music just didn't appeal to me, but I've begun getting back into them over the past four or five years. There isn't another band (including the Stones) with such a wide collection of not just good but great songs to fit any style (from bubblegum to psychedelic and everything outside and in between!).

I'll be an outlier: Who, Zep, Stones, AC/DC.
I do love Revolver though.

4. The Band
3. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
4. The Band
What did the one Dead Head say to the other Dead Head after the drugs ran out?
This Band Sucks!
LOL
2. The Who
3. The Replacements
4. Blue Oyster Cult
Good Pick!
Gotta have some longevity & be somewhat seminal in a genre

There are a ton of genres that could be classified as Rock n Roll
1. Beatles
2. Rolling Stones (Longevity is big too)
3. Led Zep
4. Grateful Dead
Modern Era
1. Nirvana
2. Jack White/ White Stripes
3. GnR
4. REM
1) Rolling Stones

I have a whole collection of Beatles songs yet most of them are just not enjoyable to listen to anymore for whatever reason, save Let it Be.
E
Led Zeppelin -greatest band: Singer, Guitarist, Drummer and Bassist
Van Halen -greatest showman, guitarist and drummer
Black Sabbath -greatest band to open the door to Heavy Metal
Zeppelin
Allman Brothers
Grateful Dead
So says this 60s/70s era kid.
The Beatles
The Who
Led Zeppelin
Rolling Stones
But 13 year old me would have wanted to knock my teeth out for leaving Kiss off the list.
We love Dead & Co, too, and went to as many shows as we could!
my first show was 4/12/82....
Pink Floyd
having trouble after that. I know Beatles, Stones and Zep deserve to be there, but not my personal favorites. I enjoy Bob Marley more.
Bruce
Dead
Los Lobos
I hear this all the time. And it's usually used as a downvote to the Beatles.
Listen to rubber soul on. By more poppy you just mean better than the Stones.

This is the correct answer :)
I think the Beatles definitely qualify as Rock.
1 - Scorpions
2 - AC/DC
3 - Led Zeppelin
4 - Linkin Park
4 is unfair, I love about 15+ rock bands.
Now if it was a list of the best in rock, I'd put Pink Floyd first, their sound is amazing.
I get that The Beatles were a colossal success and very popular, but I find them to be extremely overrated.
KISS had 4 times the makeup of Alice Cooper, with a small fraction of the songwriting talent.
The Who
Pink Floyd
Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin
The Beatles
Queen
Dead, Marley, Hendrix, Tool
Tier 2
Stones, Sabbath, Allmans, might have to take Soundgarden
Tier 3
Doors, CCR, Floyd, Nirvana
Tier 4
James Brown, Zeppelin, Cream, Alice in Chains
RESPECT TO: Beatles, Who, Dylan, ZZ Top, Radiohead, White Stripes, GnR, Metallica, Aerosmith, VH, Petty, Sublime, Sly & Family Stone, Parliament Funkadelic, Muddy Waters
