We already seem to have a good young center on the roster. A successful transition to guard would be nice.

Exactly!!!
He has played some at RG.

Will be 28 this season. JMS hasn’t proven to be the answer. Bredesen is UFA, leaving Jimmy’s Morrisey as the only other “C” under contract. I wouldn’t make him a priority, but he would upgrade the depth chart at the right price.

This is the type of post that drives me nuts. "JMS hasn't proven to be the answer."

Steelers cut Cole

Careful what you wish for - Steelers fanbase seem pretty happy about this.

Agree. But I don’t object to a plan B. We really don’t have a backup on the roster.

Pepe LePugh : 2/24/2024 10:08 am : link
I also said this would be depth at the right price. Not sure what’s driving you nuts? Schmitz didn’t play bad for a rook. But did he prove to you that we’re set at the position? I’m hopeful, but the jury is still out, don’t you think?

christian : 2/24/2024 10:32 am : link
I know nothing about Cole, but the Giants most certainly need a player who can backup the IOL positions.

They also need two starting guards, but that's another topic : )
Agree, Eric....I have a long time Giant fan friend who is ready to
GiantBlue : 2/24/2024 11:09 am : link
completely give up on Neal, Schmitz, McKethan, Peart & Ezedru.

I try to patiently explain that back in the day, OL didn't just get plopped into the starting line-up on day one but were given a season or two to develop, learn the NFL, get stronger, etc.

Now, in the age of win now, salary cap and gambling, these guys are dropped in from day one to sink or swim and then on to the next.

Ridiculous.

Replacing Schmitz isn't even on the table.

Just like last year when replacing Wan'Dale Robinson (before he tore his ACL) wasn't on the table.

Insert any rookie name here.

I agree. We have the dumbest fans in the NFL.
JMS hasn't proven himself yet
widmerseyebrow : 2/24/2024 11:48 am : link
But it's understandable. Giving up on him after his rookie year to sign a 28 year old vet who wasn't all that good as a starter? I don't get that.

Now I can get on board for a cheap vet backup or another developmental guy if the value is there. Remember Richburg was a good young center after his rookie year. It's hard to do in today's NFL but we need to hedge our OL projects.

Impatient would not be the “I” word I use

Wait until we start a rookie QB and he plays like a rookie in his first game.

"This is who you wanted to replace, Jones? You are all stupid!!! Drafting a QB was a mistake when we already had Jones!"
Guys, get off my back.
Pepe LePugh : 2/24/2024 2:05 pm : link
I did NOT say, nor do I think, we should give up on JMS. Where did that come from? He’s one of my favorite draft picks. But I can’t realistically call him a proven vet. And he did miss some time last year.

I didn’t say or think or imply we should go after Mason with a big offer.

What I said:
“I wouldn’t make him a priority, but he would upgrade the depth chart at the right price.“
Did you not bother to read that part?

I don’t think it’s even debatable that he’s more serviceable than all but 3-4 of the OL currently under contract. Why would you not want him for competition/depth?

JMS wasn’t good last year
Dave on the UWS : 2/24/2024 6:48 pm : link
last among all starting centers. DTs started taking advantage of his lack of lateral athleticism as the season went along.
I thought he was over drafted as a high floor low ceiling player.
That being said, he’s the starter this year and hopefully will be average.
(Having decent guards next to him will for sure help)
Eric. I'm with you.
Matt M. : 2/24/2024 10:42 pm : link
You all can look at PFF rankings, which are meaningless. JMS started out looking decent. He had some weaknesses, but overall was serviceable, which for a rookie C, I'll take. After coming back from injury, he looked bad; weak. I don't think he was 100%. Anyone giving up on him now is ridiculous. Anyone who is still defending Jones and giving up on JMS should be shot.
Not much to add except Cole was a HS classmate of my daughter.
tony stg : 2/25/2024 8:16 am : link
Good kid. Played some Guard in college at Mich but has not in the pros. My Steelers fan buddy (who also had a son in the same HS class) said Mason wasn’t very good this year. I do think Mason has value as a quality veteran backup, though.
I’m glad you guys weren’t around for Strahan’s rookie year.
JohnB : 2/25/2024 9:13 am : link
A 2nd rounder who barely played. How’d he work out?

Give players time to develop
Cole
stretch234 : 2/25/2024 10:07 am : link
Veteran guys like Cole who can play don’t go to teams to sit on the bench or be depth. They find places to start or wait for injuries to happen

Please point to one post in this thread that suggests giving up on JMS. If there’s one ther, I missed it. At the end of Strahan’s rookie season, is it not fair to say that he hadn’t proven anything?
