JS's rookie season was his best IMO in terms of impact & I believe stats as well.
Good pro, but nowhere even near Kelce or a lot of other great TEs. & I don't even know if we win it all in '07 if he doesn't get injured. Boss was a much better fit.
Did his own thing and failed Eli by running bad routes. He was a tough SOB with the ball in his hands but had concentration laspes and drops due to them. Also when he had had an easy TD in the Trey Junkin game in San Francisco he decided to try to take Julian Peterson on and ended up not scoring a TD on that drive.
Recency bias is real. Shockey in his prime was better. He could block like a tackle and could fly and was an absolute monster. Unfortunately it lasted one season. His body gave out rather quickly he abused his body and never shied away from contact. Kelce avoids contact and smartly so. Totally different game and back then defenders were handsy and physical. Today you can’t touch the player. I assume you guys prefer kelce over Tony G also and gronk lmao
In 2002. Legit can’t block and still can’t. Shockey is better than kittle at their peak. Best tight end no doubt is Gronk all time followed by Tony G. A better comp for kelce is gates

The Giants did actually score on that drive. Collins connected to Shockey for a 2-yard touchdown pass.
It was still a dumb move to try to run over him when he could have easily scored on that play instead.
Of the TEs I've seen as someone born in '80, JS is behind Gronk, Kelce, Gates, Gonzalez, Witten, & Shannon Sharpe. And I don't remember peak Bavaro or other great TEs like Dikta, 'The Ghost', Winslow, Newsome, etc.

Stop being silly. Shockey was very good, but a total knucklehead and disruptive. He dropped far too many passes and ran improper routes. He was not as good as Kelce, but could have been.
Nobody said anything about Gronk or Gonzalez, who were better than Kelce and Kittle, too.

Shockey was asked to block a ton and the run game was amazing and he was a massive part of that. You forget a tight end has to block? Kelce is more wr than tight end. Calling kelce a tight end isn’t fair to guys who played pre 2010. Like I said. If kelce came into the league in 2002 he wouldn’t have made it. He would have been forced to move to WR. As it is he’s asked to block maybe 10 percent of snaps. Shockey in his prime, granted it was one season of excellence, but he was dominant. Different era but he stood out above the rest. From 2002-2006 he was a great player. That era had many good tight ends who were 2 way players. Kelce is not a 2 way tight end as much as people say he’s a solid blocker. He gives effort but he’s really not effective at blocking. If you want to say as a Reciever who is better it’s no question kelce.

This.
Remember that Coughlin asked Shockey to block first
Receiving almost an afterthought at times. Kelce plays in a different era. When has he ever been asked to block? Complete apples to oranges comparison. From a talent standpoint it's Shockey. From a career standpoint it's obvoulsy Kelce, but again diffetent eras.
Good God does this place have some ridiculous homers
Travis Kelce is much better than Shockey ever was, and Shockey was good for a very short window of time. He blocked well for a TE, he did not block like a tackle. He was also often in the wrong place and dropped easy passes. He was a physical freak with a dime-store brain.
This place sounds like a bunch of old men seeing who can exaggerate about the past the most.
Jeremy Shockey at his prime was a nice player. Full Stop.

Two different eras. This is a passing era. The Chiefs are a passing team. That Kelce isn't asked to block a lot is the design of the offense, not his ability. There is no way to compare Kelce and Shockey head to head on blocking, but to dismiss Kelce's ability to block is sort sighted. He has the size and meanness to be an able blocker We know Bavaro loved to block.
Plus, Kelce is smart, makes the proper reads, is where Mahomes expects him to be and rarely drops the ball. He is every bit the bulldozer Shockey was with the ball in his hands.
RE: Shockey had better skills, if he could have aligned his skills
Pound for pound, Shockey was the better TE. These guys today are not true TEs. They are hybrid WRs. Personally I don't think we utilized him correctly. Every player has their specialty. Coaches need to be able to see that and take advantage of it. For those who were too young to have seen and play. When you have some time, take a look at some highlights.
his role changed a bit when TC took over and his blocking was critical. His rookie year he almost reached 900 yards. That 2002 offense down the stretch was pretty dynamic and Shockey was the key guy opening things up imv.
I agree he has some issues but the guy seemed to give all he had on the field.
was better than Shockey and played for a lot longer. Kelce is almost as good as Gates, but it was a much different game in terms of what the Safety was allowed to do to receiver going over the middle.
(I saw him do that at Candlestick [San Francisco[). At 260, he took on 300 pounders, all day.
Shockey was to pro football as Babe Ruth was to Baseball - Gave-No-Quarter-Expected-None. Under the tackle pile he pinched, punched and kicked people in the balls.
I remember one game when the opposition turned his helmet backwards. (Probably the most hated player since Conrad Dobler). Tom Coughlin absolutely loved him.

This. And the implication he's better than Bavaro is insulting.
At the end, Shockey was addition by subtraction. A shame, he had skills.

Just thinking about that game makes me want to take out the funnel & get wasted.
Kelce is a different animal

Shockey was better than Kittle.
One 2000's TE I always found underrated was Todd Heap from the Ravens. Never had a good QB situation and blocked well.

Totally agree with this, he was a fantastic athlete. Just dumb as rocks.
