To move away from the QB draft talk for a moment, what really happened to T. Hawkins? I know he “stunk” after a monster camp, but to people out there who (unlike myself) actually played anything from peewee FB to high school football, is he really THAT bad? I mean in terms depth going into the draft. Or perhaps Martindales defense was just a bit too much too soon for a rookie UFA? Or did he stink AND get hurt.

that the reports he looked so good in camp were "fake news" by the Giants reporters. Same thing with Waller. The camp was mostly closed to fans to we all relied on camp reports that portrayed a team that looked nothing like the team we saw Week 1.
It’s a big step up from Norfolk St

to the NFL, so I wouldn’t give up on him yet. It also should give everyone pause about overstating preseason play. Sure, he looked great when matched up with guys who may not have even made their roster, but when the lights come on, it’s a different game.

If it was fake news….then why did he start the first few games?

Furthermore….why would the bear reporters falsely pump up the team?

Makes zero sense

because the Giants could limit their future access to the team if they didn't like the reporting, so the reporters wrote fluff pieces.
Not sure that Hawkins
section125 : 3/3/2024 7:54 pm : link
stunk. He is a 6th round rookie from a small school. He has tools but was way down on the pecking order. Without a ton of reps he looses he natural reactions and add the complexity of Wink's defense and he looked a bit unsteady to shaky.

See what happens next summer in camp. I certainly wouldn't pass up drafting another CB or signing a decent FA CB because of him.

That is hoping for a response like that. He could be a good depth piece. I also think I was wrong—think he was a 7th rounder. Point is he came out of (almost literally) no where. TY.

Lmaoooo
It seemed to good to be true when he seemed to have the cb spot locked down after training camp...
Who knows maybe there is something there..
I personally wouldn't be upset taking cb at 6

Never been around an NFL team headquarters or a newsroom have you? It doesn't work that way.
Were the reporters making up the repeated quotes from Wink and the other coaches about how great Hawkins looked. Did the reporters move Jackson to slot corner so Hawkins could start outside?

I always find it amazing that people think they know how journalism works when they have never even seen a reporter in person much less talked to one. Do those same people tell surgeons how to do their job? Architects about and engineers? Lawyers? I guarantee you not a single beat reporter covering the Giants has ever worried their credentials could be pulled.
I think he is gonna be solid

WTF?

Hawkins and Waller were standouts all camp, not just because of what reporters said. We saw it. Camp was open to the public.

He also started the first game. But I guess that was just reporters writing fluff pieces
The giants came out of training camp with a really inflated
Wiggy : 3/3/2024 10:02 pm : link
Sense of false bravado. That’s why the wheels came completely off when the cowboys smacked them in the mouth. They thought they were WAAAAYYYY better than the actually were and then spent the entire season trying to fix it.

Which they couldn’t.

One of the greatest misjudgments of a squad by a coaching staff I’ve ever seen.
Our 1st real game was against Dallas
Rudy5757 : 3/3/2024 10:50 pm : link
who has one of the best WR corps in the NFL then the 3rd game against the 49ers. Thats a tough draw. I think there are tools to work with, he has size & speed just needs to learn more about NFL offenses which is not surprising.

I was surprised he didnt get more playing time at the end of the season though. A fresh start may do him good.
Day 3 picks
Fifty Six : 3/4/2024 12:26 am : link
Usually take 5ime to develop into starters, and most never do. Just the fact that they penciled him in as an opening day starter shows he has potential.
This guy is great...
NormanAllen_95 : 3/4/2024 12:50 am : link
"Have you ever considered that ALL of the reporters were told by the Giants' PR staff 'you better do right by us or :: makes slashing motion across the neck ::... oh and we are going to have the coaches lie in front of your cameras too.'"

I liked out secondary tbh
Gusto1903 : 3/4/2024 4:28 am : link
Banks is great, McKinney and Pinnock were good to awesome. And Flott is solid. There still room and Hawkins may get better, but i didnt see him cutting infront of Jackson, Banks and Flott so fast.
CB is a very nuanced position
Biteymax22 : 3/4/2024 8:15 am : link
and in my opinion, is usually the slowest to develop. Hawkins was a 6th round pick from a small school, he has the tool but when he got in real game action he struggled with the little nuance things.

If he puts the work in during the offseason I could see him making a big jump.
At the risk of stating the obvious...
Capt. Don : 3/4/2024 8:55 am : link
CB is a premium position and a position of need. If a QB is not in the cards (and I hope it is), I could see a trade back and then take EDGE or CB.
