Would the Chargers trade Herbert?

mittenedman : 3/15/2024 12:21 pm
Obviously no one can say for sure, but given Harbaugh's high praise of McCarthy, imagine if this scenario played out:

*Chargers trade Herbert to NYG for:

#6
#47
next year's 1st

They could then draft McCarthy at #5 and still have #6, #38 and #47, plus 2 more #1's next year. (Their own, and the Giants.)

All the while ditching Herbert's $50M/year contract and replacing it with their Golden Boy QB on a rookie deal.

It would be pretty exciting if that was the blockbuster trade we keep hearing the Giants involved in. But it couldn't happen until the Chargers knew they could land McCarthy.
it's insane
knowledgetimmons : 3/15/2024 12:22 pm : link
but I'll admit, it's where my head went as well when the huge announcement thread was going on.
maybe
BleedBlue : 3/15/2024 12:23 pm : link
but do we want that? what is JJ in our eyes is a franchise guy? you could get herbert on a rookie deal...

not only that but paying jones AND herbert, would take some serious cap gymnastics.

in addition to that, i think schoen and dabs want "their" guy they scouted and drafted...
Sign me up for that

.
First and foremost, we would have to do a lot of restructuring....
GiantBlue : 3/15/2024 12:24 pm : link
Including Herbert's deal to fit that into our cap this year.

While Herbert is a good QB, is he the guy Schoen wants to ride in the next stage of his GM-Ship.

Then we are all sitting there without a first next year.

Nah. I don't see it.
Don’t the Chargers still have to eat the signing

bonus from a cap perspective on the Herbert deal? I didn’t think that carried over in a trade, only the base.

What's JH's cap hit in 2024? NYG would have to create much new space.
No.
Tim in Eternal Blue : 3/15/2024 12:26 pm : link

But I’d do whatever it took to get him
Would the Chiefs Trade Mahomes?
Jim in Tampa : 3/15/2024 12:26 pm : link
Would the Bills trade Allen?

Nobody can say for sure. I mean, you can't PROVE that they won't trade them now can you?

I guess it's the same for Herbert.

His signing bonus was only $16M of the $250M guaranteed
What?
Festina Lente : 3/15/2024 12:28 pm : link
Of all the crazy hypotheticals this one takes the cake. This kids got the goods... like he's really good. They love him and you don't give away top franchise qbs.
I'd consider it
56goat : 3/15/2024 12:28 pm : link
but try to work a better deal.

Excuse me, $218M guaranteed

Per overthecap.com, his hit is only $19.3 million in 2024. It goes up to $47M next year, then $58M, then $71M.
I wouldn't put anything past Harbaugh...
bw in dc : 3/15/2024 12:29 pm : link
He may actually believe his own hype on McCarthy, and he may want to move off Herbert because of the money commitment.

I love Herbert, but I could see the logic to reset ala Denver.
Primarily due to the cap, I don't think a trade like this is likely
Matt M. : 3/15/2024 12:29 pm : link
Plus, as mentioned, I think it is more likely they make a play for a QB they (Giants) select.
Well...
Johnny5 : 3/15/2024 12:30 pm : link
Trading away one of the top QBs in the league seems like a pretty stupid idea. I would have to imagine the Giants (and 25 other teams in the league) would do whatever it took to get Herbert if that were actually a viable option.

Remember when he rolled with Kaepernick? Harbaugh marches to the beat of his own drum.

+1
I don't see how this trade is possible ...
FStubbs : 3/15/2024 12:32 pm : link

I don't see how they even make this work
Matt M. : 3/15/2024 12:40 pm : link
Per Sportrac his hit this year is $19M and then it balloons each year after. How would they make him fit this year with Jones' hit?

They would have to restructure his deal.
Don't see how it would be possible
redwhiteandbigblue : 3/15/2024 12:43 pm : link
but would take it in a heartbeat.
I said that the day Harbaugh signed. Would clear their cap space,
Victor in CT : 3/15/2024 12:44 pm : link
start the clock anew for Harbaugh, get a boatload of picks to restock on the cheap. I wouldn't be surprised if he tried it.

Yes, but he's already got 5 years plus an option for a 6th left on his deal and after this year it is loaded. I don't see it working out.
I have often compared Herbert to Jay Cutler here
Ben in Tampa : 3/15/2024 12:45 pm : link
And in fact, the Broncos made a trade that probably seemed unthinkable at the time when they sent Cutler to the Bears for multiple 1st round picks. I don’t think it’ll happen, but if Harbaugh really does love McCarthy it would probably go down something like this:

Chargers on the clock at 5, select McCarthy
Giants on the clock at 6, trade the pick to Chargers
Giants get Herbert and a 2024 4th round pick
Chargers get the 6th overall, 2025 1st round pick, 2025 4th round pick and Daniel Jones

That was a fun exercise.
In a heartbeat
j_rud : 3/15/2024 12:46 pm : link
But wtf do you do with Jones? With the hypothetical Herbert trade it would leave you very limited with even outside the box solutions like an Osweiler trade.

if we could arrange a new deal before hand (through LAC) it would mitigate the hit a bit.

I would be all for it.

You cut him post 6/1 designation. Pretty simple.

Would they be able to fit all that without hits to the rest of the roster? That's 30 mill for Jones and Herbert has a cap number just under 20.

I'm sure they'd have hits. But you take your medicine in 2024 and you are in better shape in 2025 onward. I doubt Herbert is available, but you figure out how to make it work to get him.

Don't get me wrong I'd be all for it if they could do it without touching the handful of legit pieces they have.
Herbert
TyreeHelmet : 3/15/2024 1:21 pm : link
I would do that in a heartbeat and would give up even more.

I would be shocked if the chargers traded Herbert though.
Harbaugh is crazy enough to do anything.
Spider56 : 3/15/2024 1:25 pm : link
Maybe he trades him to Minnesota and they’re the ones who jump the Giants to take McCarthy.

Ok. They’re already at 5…
I don't think it can work
Mike from Ohio : 3/15/2024 2:20 pm : link
simply because of the onerous Jones contract (which I am sure LA would have no interest in taking back without the Giants adding several more picks).

I would love to see Herbert as a Giant, but I don't think it is at all possible.
We can't really afford Herbert...
Amtoft : 3/15/2024 2:25 pm : link
I mean maybe because we didn't have to pay a 1st round draft pick that may help, but it would be tough financially to take on Herbert not just for this year, but next year when we would still owe DJ 22 million. Ideally to make this trade you add DJ to it to offset the costs for us, but Chargers can't afford that especially with having the cost of two 1st rounders.
Hey Jim
The Dude : 3/15/2024 5:01 pm : link
If you like JJM so much draft him and trade us Herbert!!

I think there's a better chance of Tiki Barber & Saquon having dinner tomorrow night than Herbert being dealt.
