Signed to one-year deals in each of the last two offseasons, Austin Schlottmann is a backup center who has been called upon for seven total starts since joining the Vikings in 2022. He filled in for an injured Garrett Bradbury in December '22, before suffering an injury of his own just a few snaps into a Week 17 loss in Green Bay. Schlottmann then re-signed with the Vikings, stepped in again for an injured Bradbury early in the season opener, and started the next three games in his absence.
He was far better this season than he had been the year before, earning a strong 72.3 pass blocking grade while cutting his total pressures allowed in half on nearly an identical snap count. Schlottmann also has some valuable versatility, having played both guard positions during his time with the Broncos. He seems like the kind of player the Vikings may once again look to bring back on a cheap one-year deal for depth reasons.

I like the center/guard versatility. He could replace Bredeson - probably somewhat of an upgrade for depth.
Seems to be a big focus on pass blocking with this OL
Have to make the new QB(s) at least somewhat confident that they won't become instant roadkill. ):
Other part of this is that Schoen so misjudged OL caliber heading into 2023--I keep wondering if the Ezeudu/McKeithan picks were among the last of the Gettleman and prior scouting staffs--Schoen and BD came in relatively late in the scouting process in 2022 and may have had to rely on incumbent assessments w/o more time.

Nope, not Gettleman...

The Giants just drafted Ezeudu in the third round and McKethan in the fifth after sending offensive line coach Bobby Johnson to North Carolina’s Pro Day and coming away impressed with the pair’s complementary skills.

It is not easy building a line. You keep plugging away. Thats why there are very few teams with complete lines.

Relying on Bobby Johnson may have been his main error in that draft. These signings signal to me that Bricillo is telling Daboll to get some more bodies in camp.
Common belief here it was a coaching issue. What if it were a selection issue largely the result of Johnson's input.
If it were solely coaching would we be signing all these guys?.
no not concerned about that at all. JMS was considered one of the top centers coming out of college all year.. his selection has little to do with Bobby Johnson

The only way this holds any water is if JMS was some no-name college player, and that wasn't the case. He was always considered best or second best at his position thru the draft process.

Where are you getting that from? If Schoen is allowing position coaches to make draft picks, that’s on him, no one else. Sure, take their input, but I really hope that the personnel dept isn’t outsourcing the draft to their position coaches.
did you forget the draft room video where the Giants were freaking out that someone had traded in front of them to draft Schmitz? Both Daboll and Schoen were freaking out.

Probably more of a backup center with guard flex with Giants.

If they get injured it may mean they are out of chances.

We're signing veteran back-ups. Not a bad thing.

Another warm body.

Hopefully the veteran backups don't retire en masse like they did back in 2021.

Both have shown nothing so far. Now they can fight for a job or leave .

Me either, depth is always good.
Have to imagine there's a bit of that going on.

So Tom Buchanan would deign to talk with him?

and id like to draft a G/T combo in the draft in the middle rounds.
you have to 100% draft OL every year. you must. you need to keep the stock full and churning.
