Phil Simms talking ball QB's

Hilary : 3/16/2024 9:06 am
Super bowl 21 MVP

Has views not shared by Sy, Eric or most on this board but an interesting listen if you have time

Thinks DJ was really good in 22
Likes Drew Locke. Was not good with the Broncos or his first year with Seahawks but last year played really well.

Really likes Caleb Williams

Not as high on Jayden Daniels because or arm strength and talent on his team but sure he will go number two

he does not like Drake Maye. He has great arm strength but his mechanics and accuracy are inconsistent, and he misses a lot of passes he should complete. My guess is Phil is wrong but he does not think New England or the giants will take him

Not crazy about JJ. Says he throws the ball one speed and can't loft the ball between a linebacker and a corner or a corner and a safety which is something I have seen as I watch all of Michigan's games

He thinks that Nix has a great understanding of the game

He says that Penix throws the ball really well

He does not see any of the quarterbacks likely to be available to the giants as worth a number six pick and does not think the giants will use that pick for a QB

Phil says he loves football. Gets his study for Sunday show done by friday and watches college football all day Saturday.

You may not agree with Phil but he knows QB play and football for sure.

Maye is their top rated qb but they want him to fall to 6…. Well played
If you watch Maye's highlights you see the wow
Andy in Halifax : 3/16/2024 9:13 am : link
If you watch full games (or even the 'every pass' videos) you see a lot of mixed results. But... same was said about Allen so maybe you can develop him and he's a stud.

I agree about Bo Nix. I think he's pretty good, if not great.

1-4-1
John Elway was one of the best QBs ever
Mike from Ohio : 3/16/2024 9:30 am : link
And he struggled to identify QB talent when he moved into management with Denver. Playing the position doesn’t mean you can scout the position. It is also an opinion given based only on watching film, and not talking to the player or those who coach him and play with him.

As mentioned above, Eli really likes Maye. So which one of Phil Simms or Eli Manning doesn’t know what he is talking about when it comes to QB play in the NFL? The answer is neither. They are simply not scouts.

Jones’ 2022 season has been talked about enough. If you think that season was good, you will probably be ok with anyone the Giants draft at QB this year because I think all of them can play at that level pretty quickly in the NFL.

Daniel Jones threw fifteen-FIFTEEN!-TDs in '22 & to some that's a 'great' season. The bar is below the ground.
If Schoen forces the Viking to jump ahead of them....
George from PA : 3/16/2024 10:13 am : link
Drafting a 4th QB in top 5.

And did not intend to draft any QB #6.

His play was a genius move.

Having Viking actually trade with the Giants for #6.....would be Philly Like!!!!
I know it’s far from an exact science

But with the most important postion in sports by a wide margin
In the most lucrative sport (in the US) by a wide margin
You would think people would be better at picking successful pro QBs

Is it that so few can be successful?
I guess there are just so many elite talents out there.
Maye
upnyg : 3/16/2024 10:46 am : link
I dont know squat about scouting QBs, but the little my eyes see is that Maye looks like a project.

I know nothing about Daniels, other than he runs well.

I dont see the Giants getting Caleb.

JJ looks like a project.

Nix look like a guy perfect for the West Coast offense

Penix looks like a guy that can throw in NY weather.

The next tier are all projects.

I'd rather us take a stud WR and a Penix and see what we can do. Theres always 2025.
It's not a real close analogy
David B. : 3/16/2024 10:47 am : link
But it seems like Maye is the Josh Allen type QB of this class. Big arm, all the tools, but needs work on his mechanics to improve his accuracy. If the Giants like him, it would be because Daboll thinks he could clean up those things like he did with Allen.

During the 7-2,stretch in particular he threw for 1420 yds and 8 TDs in 8 games. That is an avg of 158 yds per game and less than 1 TD

Saquon had 936 yds and 6 TDs and led in NFL in rushing at that point so over 100 yds per game

One of the most overrated performances in recent Giants history. He had a good year, but that was mostly due to his legs. He was at the bottom of the league in most important passing measurements. Now with an ACL and a 2nd serious neck injury, his running game will be compromised. So basically we’re stuck with Kenny Pickett.

The opinion of a guy who played the position in the NFL and still has contacts in team offices is no better than the opinion guys who have done nothing but worked for a draft guide? That makes sense.

Do you give no more weight to a guy who has fought in and led troops in war than to a guy who has watched a lot of war movies when it comes issues about the military?

I'm not sure how anyone can look at how Maye played this year and say he's worth a top 15 pick, much less top 3. But he'll go that high because of need. Coaches always look at guys with tools and think they can solve the problems. Sometimes they can, sometimes they can't. The saving grace if the Giants somehow end up with him is he will have a year to try to change his mechanics in an effort to solve his issues.

To be fair, without opinioning on Jones' ability, you can't judge his value without his running ability factored in.

And I have to say, I don't care how many yards and TDs a QB throws for it the team wins. How many INTs did Jones have in those games? He also was part of how many 4th quarter TD drives for wins? I'd be happy with 99 yards and no TDs every week if the Giants win.
My take is that out FA additions are a Giant tell:
Rod in St Cloud : 3/16/2024 12:01 pm : link
Free Agency is the means to shore up the team's weaknesses, so we don't draft hungry. We added 4 offensive linemen in Elumenor (45 starts), Runyon (50 starts), Stinnie (12 starts), and Scholtman (14 starts). Conclusion: We are not obligated to take an OL with pick #6, but still possible.

We added 2 blocking TEs in Manhertz (53 starts) and Stoll (26 starts), so we won't need that type. Conclusion: Bowers could still be in play, although that's a bit early.

We replace Barkley with Singletary (66 starts). Conclusion: We do need a better starting RB, but there aren't any worth it in round one.

We added a solid backup QB in Lock (23 starts), so he's able to fill in if Jones isn't ready to start the season or gets injured once again. QB is definitely still in play at #6, but it may not be round 1 depending on how things play out. It appears Minnesota is planning to jump us into the 4th or 5th spot for a QB, so taking the 4th best QB is going to be expensive as we cannot stand pat at the 6th spot and hope to get the 4th best QB. Conclusion: We are probably not moving up to get the 4th best QB. We will probably take a QB in late 1st round or early 2nd round if Nix or Penix are available,

We added 2 specialty WRs in McKenzie (28 starts) and Olszewski. Conclusion: We did not take a top level WR and that is one area we have a great need and will be drafting hungry. There are 3 top level WRs available to draft at #6 between Harrison, Odunze, and Nabers and unless we do trade up for a QB, we are going to take one of these WRs.

Blackledge at #7 - Eh … no
Kelly at #14 - a brilliant steal
Eason at #15 - huge reach
O’Brien at #24 - Son, it doesn’t get better than this

Marino at #27. - There’s gold in them there hills

Do you remember 2021 when he went down?

His 2022 was a good season, it wasn’t great. He had some good games and some bad games but just taking Sy as a measuring stick, Jones was a stud a bunch of times and never a dud. Saying he only had 15 TDs and leaving out the 7 Rushing TDs is just skewing the numbers. For reference, in 2022 in 4 less games Lamar Jackson had 17 TDs (7 INTs to Jones 5) and 3 rushing TDs and only 29 total TDs in 2023. You could argue that none of the Giants Wrs or TEs would start on Baltimore.

2023 was bad but we played multiple double digit win teams and were without some of our best players in Barkley and Thomas when Jones was healthy. Taylor put up 9 points on Buffalo. Taylor was 4-7 for 8 yards against the mighty Jets before he went down.

Let’s also remember 2022 when the star WR was Hodgins who is not even on a team because he stinks. Regardless of what you say about the Vikings, they still won 13 games in 2022.

Yes but the same guys who would be picking the QB in 2024 are the same that saw DJ up close and personal for all of 2022 and gave him that contract.

Plus leaving out DJs rookie year and putting in the Joe Judge years is kind of silly. The GM and coach saw DJ play in 2022 on a daily basis and gave that contract.

Go back and read. I said his 2023 was bad and I never said he was a great QB. But leaving out his rookie season when he threw for 24 TDs and leaving off his rushing TDs is not telling the whole picture. He also had 4 tds against the Colts in the must win game but that doesn’t count because the colts were bad. He can only play the games scheduled. But he didn’t beat the Eagles so the rest of his season was crap

Is anything that goes wrong ever Daniel Jones’s fault?

Does he ever get credit? Where did I say things weren’t his fault. Leaving out his 24 TDs as a rookie and his rushing TDs is skewing the numbers. He also led the team to a playoff win which hasn’t been done in 10 years. He was not just along for the ride, he put up the numbers. Yes, we got crushed by the Eagles who went to the Super Bowl but did anyone expect the Giants to make the playoffs? Win a playoff game? You can’t blame the guy for everything. They went 1-5 with him and 5-6 without him so still a losing record.

I forgot, we traded for All Pro Darren Waller and signed the electric Paris Campbell and 3rd round pick Hyatt to make the dream team.

Does he get credit? An entire section of the fan base has dug themselves in so deep with never ending support for Daniel Jones over the past 5 years they are now mocked as members to a special Fan Club. Just follow the trail with posts about the Minn WC game and it will take you to their front door.

Do you remember 2021 when he went down?

His 2022 was a good season, it wasn’t great. He had some good games and some bad games but just taking Sy as a measuring stick, Jones was a stud a bunch of times and never a dud. The Minnesota wildcard playoff win.

A game that will go down in infamy.

Jones play in this massive playoff game was arguably the greatest Giants QB effort ever, better than Simms SB MVP game. (sarcasm off)

Take the Wr and trade for Fields?

How come no one remembers playing the Cowboys or Eagles in 2022?

You would think they'd at least remember how horrible DJ looked the following week against the Eagles..and then he replicated that beauty that with most of his 2023 performances.

No offense to Sy but being a stud in his game recap isn’t enough to give him a 6th year.

Sy even thinks the Giants need to move on.

And they were proven wrong in doing so. This is the same group that got us Waller. That hasn't fixed the OL. That hasn't drafted that well. That tagged Barkley when they should have rebuilt.

With that said, I understand your point hat 2022 was a good season. And his rookie year were pretty good but his other years were not good (from not good to awful). And he is injury-prone. Thus the point of "he sucks" vs" he's not good" is irrelevant. Way too much money for not being good along with the risk of injury in which he forces you to use a backup QB or you need to spend more to get a good one because of his injury history.

It's time to go. Too much risk with injury and how his legs may now be impacted because of it. With his injuries he loses a lot of time to get better. It has been enough.

calls Drake Maye the most talented QB talent he's seen in 15 years.
Did he say in what part of his game he was most talented? Or did he say he had skills?

I think that talent is like saying "potential", its there if you can figure out how to get it to show up on game day. It may be true, but we hear that every year about QBs. There's something to say when QBs know how to win, despite not being the most athletic, or best runner, or can throw 80 yards.
Phil Simms is my all time favorite NY Giant

He's forgotten more football this morning than I'll know for as long as I live.

I have no idea how the QBs who are going to be drafted this will translate to the NFL.

But I don't understand what he's talking about when it comes to Daniel Jones. I don't see it. I've never seen it.

IMO the Giants have no chance of winning the NFC East as long as Daniel Jones is their #1 QB.

We didn’t have the skill players to compete against good teams, people remember a team that was projected to be where we were in 23’. I’m surprised at how we made the playoffs bereft of talent as we were. People, including some heavies on this board, are on a seesaw. Daboll won coach of the year, for this reason (and a bad schedule). We pin everything on the qb. Hes not Mahomes, but he did help us compete. Happy to move on, but our team over performed with a bad sched.

imagine if we improve the overall team and only need a qb

that can play better than Jones to be competitive.

If that is how the Giants are thinking then pick 6 will be the wr and maybe a qb later in the daft or a total trade down to add more talent and then draft a qb lower in the draft. Rattler, Pratt?

I'm not sold the Giants plan to go qb at pick 6

My biggest fear in this draft is that Giants will force a QB pick
BigBlueBuff : 3/16/2024 10:51 pm : link
at #6 and repeat the mistakes of the past. If they love a guy like McCarthy then so be it, but if not then it’s better to keep the powder dry and identify a sleeper than force that top pick and draft DJ redux.

Eric, how have the receivers Jones has played with fared elsewhere? Toney? Richie James? I get that the QB bares most of the responsibilities, but not much you can do when the talent around you is below average, and you only have time for 3 step drops.

During the 7-2,stretch in particular he threw for 1420 yds and 8 TDs in 8 games. That is an avg of 158 yds per game and less than 1 TD

Saquon had 936 yds and 6 TDs and led in NFL in rushing at that point so over 100 yds per game

Yeah that’s great but he is also 15-34-1 outside of those 7-2 start and is 3-10-1 since or 4-11-1 including the playoffs. So which do you surmise is the outlier?
