the Running Back situation at present -

Del Shofner : 3/16/2024 9:16 pm
Running Backs:

26 Devin Singletary RB 5-7 203 27 2024/UFA N/A
31 Matt Breida RB 5-10 195 29 2022/UFA UFA
23 Gary Brightwell RB 6-1 218 25 2021/6 2025
20 Eric Gray RB 5-10 211 25 2023/5 2027
35 Jashaun Corbin RB 6-0 221 24 2022/UDFA 2025
34 Deon Jackson RB 6-0 218 25 2023/Waivers 2025

Per Eric's roster page. Assuming Breida doesn't return, that's 5 RB's under contract. Assume one more in the draft. Where do you see this going?

RB is added, draft or otherwise, I expect the running game will be de-emphasized. I think Dabs/Kafka have used the tools they were given: SB and not much else to threaten opposing defenses. Singletary and company are sufficient to keep defenses honest. I’d look for the chunk plays on the ground to come as much from Wan’Dale and the other wide outs as from the backs. The focus on offense will shift to the passing game, which is what the coaches preferred all along.

Agreed. They aren't gonna do that with the current WR group.
3rd round is a good place

SMH. This is all true, so why did the Giants spend a 5th rounder on a running back last year?

Schoen and Daboll really screwed that one up. Honestly, I hope they don’t draft a running back. Dude isn’t going to play if they do.
It’s the same as it was last year
Rudy5757 : 3/16/2024 11:09 pm : link
Barkley played 85% of the snaps when healthy and his stats were underwhelming. We can expect about the same and a 4th round flyer or later will be added.
If the OL has actually been upgraded
Bill in UT : 3/17/2024 12:10 am : link
most of those guys should be able to do 3.5-4 yards a pop. If the OL still stinks, even drafting a decent guy isn't going to matter much.
Why is there a concern about RB
.McL. : 3/17/2024 12:21 am : link
The offensive concern should be QB...................., OL......, TE, WR pretty much in that order... I can see an argument to move WR up, but we do have Hyatt and Robinson who I think are both decent, Slayton as well. For all the talk about targets, and yest the Giants need a better WR, there are targets on this team.

That said, EVERY other offensive position group is at least an order of magnitude more in need.
NONE of them will be facing a man 9-man line ...
Manny in CA : 3/17/2024 12:33 am : link

And our O-line should be improved (I'm trying very hard to be optimistic, about now)
I'm
DG_89 : 3/17/2024 3:13 am : link
not that worried. It looks like it'll be RB by committee. Remember our HC is an architect and our OC is a disciple of pass based offenses where the RB must merely be competent; hence the Singletary signing. It also looks like even with Singletary in the fold the guys on the back end of thr depth chart will get a shot to show they belong & get meaningful playing time. I'm will to take a step back and see how this unfolds

Wait until you look at what the other backs on the roster did. If you think Barkley was underwhelming, just look at everyone behind him.
I expect another vet and/or mid-round draft pick
Formerly TD : 3/17/2024 7:59 am : link
Look for RB in round 3, 4 or 5. Maybe a very cheap vet added, too. The guys behind Singletary are mostly camp fodder at best at the moment. While we will deemphasize the running game, we still need competent backs. We have only one proven at the moment.
Still need an ‘inside the tackles’ runner.
Ivan15 : 3/17/2024 8:22 am : link
I think they have to look more closely at Brightwell but I wouldn’t be surprised if they sign Zeke Elliot if he comes at the right price.
Breida and Brightwell should be sent packing. No value with either.
ThomasG : 3/17/2024 8:25 am : link
Would add another free agent for short deal and put another draft pick on roster as well (with return abilities). Early Day 3.
If the OLine still stinks, the RB situation is irrelevant
Marty in Albany : 3/17/2024 9:47 am : link

If the OLine improves, the RBs will improve in proportion, as will the rest of the offense.
I would not mind
Breeze_94 : 3/17/2024 11:34 am : link
Drafting Braelon Allen with their 3rd or 4th round pick. He and Singletary are a perfect compliment to each other.
good luck with all that
HomerJones45 : 3/17/2024 2:31 pm : link
Singletary has rushed for 20 td's in his career. His long run last season was 24 yards. Singletary has had the luxury of playing with Allen and Stroud at qb. No dc gives a rat's ass about Singletary or any of these other backs.

This is one of the worst backfields in the NFL. No sugar coating it. Best of luck getting any DC to pay any attention to it.
I Think It's The Least Of Our Problems
BlueVinnie : 3/17/2024 2:37 pm : link
Decent (even very good) RBs are available on day 2 and even early day 3 of every draft.
The running backs
Manny in CA : 3/17/2024 8:12 pm : link
Enemy defenses will have ZERO regard for our running game, which will make it easier to choke the passing attack. On third and long they’ll blitz the heck out of the QB.

Eric Grey says hello. You really trust this regime to draft another RB late?

Late? Eric Gray was a 5th round pick. He said day 2 or early day 3...meaning rounds 2-4. There will be good ones taken late day 3 for sure. Probably one or two good ones still available round 4.
Public Notice: Gray is not setting ….
